2008 GMC Yukon won’t start

I'm very frustrated because I had my vehicle towed to the dealership and they replaced the fuel pump. Did it work? NO. I had to get someone to pick me up. Later, about 10 hours, he took me back to my truck and it started just fine. The dealership wants to replace the fuel pump 'again' — what is your assessment of this?
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The fuel pump is controlled by a fuel pump flow control module. If the fuel pump comes on/off, this could very likely be your issue. The good thing is that the fuel pump makes an audible noise when cranking, so it is easy to see if it is coming on. Now, fuel is only one ingredient needed for an engine to run, the ignition system and induction system also need to be looked at along with engine computer inputs such as the crankshaft sensor. Fault codes, also needs to be read out and corrected. You may want to enlist the help of a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who have the equipment and expertise for a second opinion on your car starting issue. They will be able to make the necessary repairs to get your car back running.

The fuel pump is your vehicle`s unsung hero. It takes gas from the gas tank and sends it to the engine so your car, truck, or SUV can start and run. Your vehicle`s fuel pump should last at least 100,000 miles or more.
After 100,000 miles, the failure of the pump is likely enough that if you are replacing a major part in the fuel system nearby, it may be advantageous to replace it at the same time.
Where is the fuel filter located on my GMC? The fuel filter is always going to be found between the fuel tank and the engine. For most vehicles, the fuel filter is located inside the top of the fuel tank, right where it connects with the fuel line, although on some cars if might be elsewhere along the fuel line.
The fuel filter is positioned in the line leading from the gas tank to the engine and prevents containments from getting inside the engine, which could lead to a loss in performance and potential damage to the cylinder lining.
Bad Sensors

One common culprit for this problem is the crankshaft position sensor, which measures the position and speed of the crankshaft. The computer uses the information from this sensor to know when to fire the spark plugs. If the sensor isn`t working, the spark plugs won`t fire, keeping the engine from starting.

Fuel pump failures tend to be sudden and unpredictable, with few symptoms to warn the motorist that trouble is brewing. And the higher the mileage on the vehicle, the greater the risk of a fuel pump failure.
With the fuel pressure gauge attached, start the engine and let it idle. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator; the pressure should drop approximately 8 to 10 PSI. If it does not, suspect a problem with the regulator or its` vacuum supply.
Can a fuel pump go out without warning? Absolutely! A car fuel pump will fail without warning more often than you may think. All things related to a car fuel pumps like the injectors, the pressure regulator, and the car fuel pump itself are the part that are most replaced with the fuel system.
The mass air flow sensor (MAF) is used to measure the flow rate of air entering a fuel injected engine. The PCM uses air mass information to calculate and deliver the correct amount of fuel to the cylinders under all engine operating conditions.
If the fuel pump relay fails the fuel pump will be left without power. The engine may still crank when the key is turned, however it will not be able to start due to lack of fuel. This symptom can also be caused by a wide variety of other issues, so having the vehicle properly diagnosed is highly recommended.
There`s no such thing as an intermittent mechanical fuel pump failure. Any power loss, engine `choke` problems, etc. are being caused by something else. In a fuel injected engine, electric fuel pumps can fail intermittently.
A leading cause of fuel pump failure is running the fuel tank low. This is particularly critical on late model vehicles without a fuel pressure return system. Running such a vehicle out of fuel once can permanently damage the fuel pump.
If your car`s fuel pump has gone bad—but hasn`t completely stopped working—you should still be able to start it by applying manual pressure, attaching a fuel pressure gauge, or making sure the engine receives consistent heat.
The most common cause of fuel pump failure is frequently running the tank low on fuel, which causes the motor to overheat. The second most common cause is fuel contamination, usually dirt and rust particles that clog the fuel strainer and prevent the pump from drawing enough fuel under high engine load.
The fuel filter is positioned in the line leading from the gas tank to the engine and prevents containments from getting inside the engine, which could lead to a loss in performance and potential damage to the cylinder lining.

The fuel filter service indicator is usually mounted at the outlet of the suction fuel filter (between suction fuel filter and fuel pump). Other mounting arrangements directly to the filter head are also used.
The fuel filter is located between the fuel tank and the fuel pump, and removes impurities that prevent your car from running smoothly — a clogged filter can lead to a “coughing” engine, and even a complete shutdown.
The MAF can become clogged with excessive carbon build-up from the combustion cycle, or sometimes by road grime. If it is too dirty, it will be unable to correctly measure the air fuel ratio, and cause your car to not start or exhibit other unusual symptoms.

Vehicle won’t start, once it’s jump started it only stays running until you turn it off, then it work start again without jumping.
ANSWER : Hi there. There could be two problems here. It is possible that your battery is bad and will not take a charge from your alternator while driving. In that case every time you shut your car off you will not have enough juice to start it again. Inspect your battery – it should have at least 12.5 to 13 volts to start your car, if it doesn’t you will need to replace the battery. The second problem could be that your alternator is bad and not charging your battery, in this case you will need to replace your alternator. Both the battery and the alternator can be tested in your car. If you would like to have the car checked for you, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to diagnose the starting problem and proceed with repairs.

Fuel pump engages. Batery good, alternator good volts, jump start helps when wont start. Temp does not matter. Intermittent?
ANSWER : Hello. Thank you for writing in. There are several reasons your vehicle may only start when jump starting. The first and most common is a build up of resistance that is causing you to need a boost of voltage to get the engine started. This may be due to poor battery cables, a bad ground connection, a poor starter solenoid, and a couple of other issues. The first thing you want to do is perform a visual inspection of the starting system. Make sure there is no corrosion build up in the battery cables. You can also check the resistance across these wires and make sure you have a solid connection between components. You then want to make sure the starter solenoid is doing its job. It is responsible for taking the small amount of electricity sent by the ignition and turning it into a huge electrical charge that is strong enough to push over the engine with the help of some gear ratios in its favor. Do some more testing, and stick to the basics before assuming its something seriously complicated.

The car crank but won’t start
ANSWER : Hi there. This does sound like an issue with the wiring. If the check engine light is coming on every now and then this means that when it does not come on there is no power to the computer. This can be the wiring harness issue or an ignition switch problem. I would have to test for voltage to the computer when the problem is occurring to be able to find where the issue lies. If you need assistance, a certified YourMechanic technician can be dispatched to your location to inspect your vehicle’s non-start issue and suggest any necessary repairs.

Car won’t start. When trying to start, starter makes a clicking noise and then closed back hatch recloses.
ANSWER : It sounds like there is some type of drain on the battery. When there is low voltage in a battery, it can cause several symptoms. The electrical systems can act very strangely when they don’t have the correct voltage being supplied. When a battery won’t hold a charge, it can be caused by a wiring issue, a bad battery, or some type of parasitic draw that can slowly pull voltage from the battery. Some electrical diagnosis done by a professional, such as one from YourMechanic, will be necessary to pinpoint the cause.

So I have a hyundai sonata se push to start. My car won’t turn on, power is working, I push tof start but it won’t crank. I don’t
ANSWER : Hi there. It sounds like you have a failed starter. However, without proper testing there is no way to be 100% sure. I suggest having the battery tested first with a digital battery tester that provides current voltage, cold cranking amps, and state of health. Also inspect for corrosion on the terminals and cables as this will cause excessive resistance and not allow proper voltage/amps to the starter. Other possible failures could be in the wiring harness, relay, fuses, or communication network. I suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts. Your Mechanic has several available technicians that can assist you with a car does not start inspection.
