2003 Ford explorer.i put it in reverse and pressed the gas and it wouldn’t move

It wouldn't move in reverse but when it did it jumped and it sounded like something was scrubbing. In drive it did the same thing so we parked it and tried it again this time it just started jumping and skipping sounded like it was going to cut off. The transmission on it has been rebuilt
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The transmissions on the Explorers had issues with the reverse and drive band servo binding in the shaft hole on the transmission case. The transmission case would need to be modified by inserting an over-sized bushing in the case, or the case would need to be replaced with a new design.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

The biggest issue with the 2021 Ford Explorer is engine trouble. The 3.0L EcoBoost engine has had numerous issues since its debut in 2020, including check engine lights coming on and engine stalls. These issues have caused many owners to experience a decrease in fuel efficiency and performance.
The most common 2021 Explorer problem includes powertrain issues. There are 10 reports of gears slipping, the vehicle rolling while in park, and sudden loss of power.
Transmission problems are often accompanied by warning lights and error codes. A number of drivers have reported that their vehicles failed to shift into gear or slipped out of gear while driving, resulting in a complete loss of power. Many 2020 Ford Explorer owners have posted transmission complaints online.
2004 Ford Explorers commonly have transmission problems such as the vehicle hesitates when shifting, lunges forward when engaging and even clunking in reverse. Additional Ford Explorer transmission problems include shifting gears, gears are slipping, or the vehicle will not move.
Don`t buy Ford Explorers that were made between 2002 and 2006 because their transmissions are prone to problems. Other year models are safe.
Ford`s PowerShift dual clutch transmission was used in 2010. Vehicles impacted are the Ford Fiesta (model years 2011-2016) and the Ford Focus (model years 2012-2016) equipped with a PowerShift transmission.
Depending on the issue (low fluid is an easy DIY job), most transmission problems can only be properly diagnosed and repaired by a reputable mechanic. Most transmission repairs require specific tools and replacement parts to get them back up to speed.
Transmission failure can be caused by slipping, symptomatic noises, lack of fluid due to leaks, overheating, or outside factors that affect the transmission.
Another way to look for transmission problems is to hold down the brake pedal with one foot while stepping on the gas pedal with the other foot so you can rev up the engine. Make sure the parking brake is on during this time, and don`t rev the car for longer than a few seconds.
1. At the top of all auto repair experts lists for causes of problematic transmissions is low transmission fluid. Usually caused by a leak somewhere in the system, low or contaminated fluid makes it nearly impossible for the transmission to automatically shift gears and run smoothly.
Transmission Wear-and-Tear: How long does a Ford F-150 transmission last? Typically, F-150 transmissions can last anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 miles with proper maintenance. Keep in mind that your transmission will experience wear and tear at the same rate as your engine.
If you`re noticing that your car isn`t shifting gears as smoothly as it used to, then your transmission might need some work. If you feel like the gear changes are starting to happen too slowly or not at all (like when accelerating from a stop), this could indicate that something is off with your car`s gearbox.
Park the vehicle, set the parking brake, then step on the clutch pedal, and put the transmission into first gear. Listen and feel for any grinding, or other noises when putting the shifter into gear, as that could indicate a potential problem with that particular gears` synchronizer.
Here`s a review of the most reliable used Ford Explorers by year, including the impressive 2010, 2011, and 2012 models. Model years like 2010 and 2011 are considered to be the most reliable used Ford Explorers, while model years 2003 and 2005 may be best avoided.
Turn off your vehicle`s ignition and wait patiently for 5 to 10 seconds. Start the engine and allow it to idle for several seconds. Switch off the ignition and wait patiently for another 30 to 40 seconds. Repeat these steps 2 to 3 times in order to reset your vehicle`s transmission control module.
First check the shift cable to make sure it`s not broken. If it`s good then check the shift arm on the transmission to make sure it`s moving when you actually shift it. If it does then there`s an internal transmission problem. It`s either a valve body problem or mechanical linkage problem from the shift arm.
2023 Ford Explorer Recalls

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair vehicles equipped with a 360-degree camera. The video output may fail, preventing the rearview camera image from displaying.

The Ecoboost engine in early models is known for running hot. It had a nylon coolant pipe that often failed when exposed to high temperatures. This caused coolant to leak and the engine to overheat. Ford recalled this issue and replaced the faulty parts with metal ones.

My car starts but when i put it in drive and press on the gas it won’t move
ANSWER : This is often a sign of low transmission fluid or a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car’s computer activates a transmission solenoid, which directs transmission fluid into the valve body to engage the correct gear. When this is faulty or not working properly, this can cause a delay in gear shifting or in some cases cause the car to not shift at all. This type of problem is amplified any time the transmission is low on fluid creating a drop in hydraulic pressure.

This may indicate a failing speed sensor. The transmission speed sensor is a magnetic sensor that provides information related to the speed of the input and output shafts in the transmission, allowing the transmission to shift smoothly. The sensor counts the internal number of revolutions of the transmission and transmits that information to the transmission control unit, where the data is used to determine the rotational speed. As the rotation increases, the control unit directs the changing of gears. When this is not working properly, this may cause the transmission to shift erratically or in some cases not at all. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to take the car for a test drive to more specifically determine the cause for this.

doesn’t move when i put it in reverse but then i put it in 4 low then reverse and it slips but it moves.
ANSWER : You have the Chrysler 46RE transmission. Among the possible causes of what you describe is a rear servo piston that is sticking or broken, pin bore wear and/or the reverse band is slipping. The servo piston on the 46RE has a tendency to get misaligned in the bore and that results in inadequate force on the band. If bad enough, reverse line pressure will apply force against the misaligned piston, breaking or damaging the piston. The bore can also get worn resulting in band apply pressure that is too low. I would consider the foregoing possibility first. This can potentially be repaired with the transmission still in place but if the bore is damaged, that could be a problem because the bore is integral to the case. If you want this investigated, and repaired if possible, please request a no reverse diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

My 1999 Buick Regal will go into reverse and move, but when I put it into drive it just revs up and won’t move.
ANSWER : Hi there. Check the transmission fluid and see if its low or dark. If the fluid is full and red in color, then the transmission is slipping. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you with your transmission.

I have a Ford Escape 2001 lxt it makes a rattling noise & puts like it’s out of gas only when I put it drive & reverse… My daddy
ANSWER : Hello.

The symptoms that you are experiencing can be produced by a wide variety of issues.

Common problems that cause these symptoms for this vehicle are faulty ignition coils, bad EGR piping, a bad EGR valve, or a clogged catalytic converter.

I would recommend checking those components out, and also scanning the vehicle for trouble codes, before moving on to looking at the transfer case or the rear end.

If you feel like you need assistance with this, enlist a professional mechanic who can diagnose the source of the noise and make the repairs that are necessary.

I put my car into drive but it reverses 2003 Ford Mustang
ANSWER : Hi there – thinking about the sequence of events you describe, it seems clear that the gear shifter linkage – probably the shifter cable attachments – was disassembling itself, leaving the transmission in Reverse. In the end, the starter interlock doesn’t sense Park or Neutral, it will no longer start the engine. I recommend a shifter inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, and give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

It’s going 20 miles per hour in 3rd gear. The car was in reverse and wouldn’t move but it will accelerate.
ANSWER : Hi there. The transmission is in limp mode to only go in 3rd gear. The reverse not working and then all of a sudden it works, but will not accelerate past 20 mph, then either the transmission is slipping or the range selector has failed. Check the range selector sensor and see if the harness is attached. Make sure that there is power to the sensor and that the sensor is not loose or cracked. If you replace the range selector sensor and are still having the same problem, then the transmission is probably slipping or the torque converter has failed. If you need further assistance with your vehicle only going 20 miles per hour, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

When I put it into Drive, it won’t barely move, but it will reverse.
ANSWER : Hi there. Unfortunately, this sounds like an internal failure of the transmission. One or more of the components inside the transmission that is required to engage the forward gears has failed. The transmission will require replacement or a rebuild. Unfortunately, Your Mechanic does not offer transmission replacement or rebuild services. An inspection performed by a qualified technician will provide a definitive prognosis to your dilemma. Your Mechanic has several available technicians that can assist you with a car does not move inspection.
