Why is my car making a rattling noise when i accelerate

This might be long.
So around November December of 2015 I messed up my transmission it had no transmission fluid so the gears were slipping. I had gotten it fixed by one of my mom's friends who is a mechanic and has his shop. he charged me 1300 to rebuild it i think whatever i was happy it was fixed. Then around march the following year my car suddenly started to make a rattling noise when i accelerate i was so scared i thought it could explode or something. so i took it to the same mechanic and all he did was a visual inspection while i hit the gas he said it was the catalytic converter
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle may be having a catalytic converter issue. When the catalyst inside of the unit fails, it can chip off into chunks and rattle around in the case. The sound amplifies when the vehicle is accelerating because the airflow out of the exhaust increases with engine speed. The transmission is located under the vehicle in a similar area, however the noises should be able to be deciphered with an inspection. The units are far enough away from each other, you would know if the catalytic converter was the cause. It is isolated and easier to pinpoint. Finding the area of the noise should be enough. You usually hear this noise when accelerating the vehicle. Most people call this a pinging or rattling sound. This noise is caused by an air/fuel mixture in the engine cylinder being ignited prematurely by the heat of compression as the piston is moving up on the compression stroke.
The most common reasons a Chevrolet Trailblazer has a rattling noise are the ball joints, struts or strut mount, or a problem with the sway bar links. Search our network of RepairPal Certified shops near you to speak with a technician about your issue. Oops! We got lost!
A loose center console cover, broken glove box hinge, or even an item resting in the door panel pocket or cup holder can suddenly start rattling at idle. So, if you hear rattling when your car is idling, check carefully around the interior, including the trunk or cargo area.
A common issue is unbalanced tires. When your tires are unbalanced or even bubbled, you could also experience shaking when you accelerate. It could be a bent axle or driveshaft. The driveshaft also connects the engine to the wheels and axles of the rear wheels.
If your car`s transmission is poorly lubricated, metal components inside of it will grind against one another. This can lead to a rattling sound as gears wear down inside the transmission. Even worse, these gears may eventually make the transmission unusable.
It sounds like a light knocking or growling sound. Gear rattle is an audible noise transmitted from the impacts between the transmission gear teeth. A vehicle engine`s torsional vibrations (momentary angular acceleration) pass through a transmission causing the separation and resulting impact of the gear teeth.
If the rattle just started after putting on the summer tires, check for loose wheel covers. Check wheel well plastic liners and underbody panels, especially those connected to the lower edge of the front bumper cover. Check the exhaust system; are any hangers or clamps loose or broken.
When your engine is lubricated properly with fresh oil, it should run fairly quietly. As the oil ages and it loses its ability to lubricate the components, the parts will start to move harder against one another causing friction and grinding. These rattling, rumbling, and knocking noises will be hard to miss.
: a rapid succession of sharp clattering sounds. : noise, racket.
Should your vehicle`s engine run low on engine oil it could cause it to make a loud “ticking or tapping” noise. This noise is caused by an insufficient amount oil being pumped into the top part of the engine. A simple check of the engine oil level will help you determine if the system is low.
When the spark plugs malfunction, they reduce the effectiveness of the engine`s cylinders, which then causes the cylinders to rattle. These unpleasant noises indicate that the cylinders are being overworked and will lead to further troubles down the line.
What does a bad catalytic converter sound like? Often, a clogged catalytic converter sounds like a rattling noise is coming from under your vehicle and engine when you`re starting, idling or driving. Excess heat or damage in the converter can break apart the honeycomb materials, resulting in the rattling noise.
When you let off of the gas pedal, the engine acts as a brake, so it wants to tilt in the opposite direction as when you are pressing the gas pedal. If there is excessive wear in the mounts, this will give it room to move/rattle/vibrate.
This rattling noise should not be taken lightly as it warns of upcoming timing chain failure. The cause of the noise is faulty timing chain guide rails and timing chain tensioners that wear out well ahead of schedule. These components are there to keep the timing chain tight and properly positioned.
A misfiring engine also causes rattling, along with knocks, pings, and other forms of engine noise.

If you ever begin to pick up on some changes like bad powertrain performance, engine misfires, or loud noises, that could be a symptom of your O2 sensor probably having issues.
Driving with A Failed Catalytic Converter

If you`re noticing slow powertrain performance, reduced acceleration, a smell of rotten eggs or sulfur from the exhaust, dark exhaust smoke, or extreme heat from under the vehicle, these are symptoms of a clogged Catalytic Converter, and it should be replaced quickly.

Why is my car making this rattling noise?
ANSWER : Hi there. The rattling noise could be the drive belt or pulley that is loose when not under a load. When turning the wheels or on highway driving conditions, the noise may not be there for the engine is under a load. Try turning on the air conditioner and see if the noise goes away. If so, then the tensioner could have a weak spring.

Billing question was sent to CS for the cost of diagnosing a rattling noise on the engine and the cost of replacing the parts after the diagnosis of a 2000 Toyota Corolla with a L4-1.8L engine.

My car makes a really annoying noise and sometimes dies right after
ANSWER : Hi there. From the description you have provided your vehicle’s moaning noise and intermittent stalling problem could be any number of things. It could be a failed alternator diode making the moaning noise and affecting the idle.

A failed alternator diode(s) allows voltage to flow both directions or no flow at all resulting in noise heard and erratic electrical operation. It could be a faulty idle air control valve. The idle air control valve can make noise and would account for the erratic idle and sporadic dying. It could be an accessory component, such as an A/C compressor, serpentine belt tensioner, or idler pulley, power steering pump making noise and placing undo load on the engine at idle. If you would like to have this done, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to diagnose the noise and stalling issue.

Car makes thudding noise and shudders at low speed
ANSWER : Your car seems to have what is called a "limited slip" rear end which controls the amount of power coming from the drive train to ensure that the power is evenly distributed to both wheels. The limited slip clutch packs will chatter a bit when it is low on fluid or the fluid needs to be changed. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to you to have this shaking issue diagnosed and repaired properly.

Car makes grinding noise – 1996 Chevrolet Corsica
ANSWER : Hey there, thanks for writing in. I would have a professional mechanic check out the constant velocity joints on your vehicle. One or more of them may be worn enough to cause the noises you describe. S/he can diagnose and replace any failed CV joints.

Car making a low noticeable sound at speeds between 55 km/hr to 70km/hr.
ANSWER : Hi there:

Diagnosing ’noises’ remotely is one of the more difficult things to do for any mechanic. However, there are a few things which could cause this noise, ranging from loose motor mounts, loose serpentine or drive belt, pulley’s or even wheel or front end suspension issues. The best way to diagnose any problem is to have a professional mobile mechanic complete a car is making a noise inspection; so they can ride with you to attempt and replicate the noise; which will help them pinpoint the source of the noise and recommend the right repairs be completed.

Why is the car losing power and not accelerating? 1995 BMW 318is
ANSWER : Hello and thank you for contacting YourMechanic. Check the ground wire from the main engine to frame ground to the right side engine mount. If this wire is corroded or loose, this will cause the engine to loose power on acceleration. Also, check the throttle position sensor (TPS) for any damage or loose wire connections. If the wires are all in good condition on the engine and the TPS, then I recommend replacing the TPS. If you need further assistance troubleshooting your vehicle, then seek out a technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to diagnose the vehicle’s loss of power and proceed with any needed repairs.

car making womp womp noise and pop
ANSWER : A common cause of a noise like that is tire belt (internal) separation, flat spot(s) on tire or other tire defects. If the tires end up being excluded during a diagnostic, the CV axles, wheel bearings, and unfortunately the transmission and clutch have to be considered. The noise on turning is suggestive of a possibly defective outer CV joint but very loose tie rods ends and ball joints can sometimes be implicated. Also, it is possible to have a bad strut bearing, in the strut mount. Keep in mind, a "combination" of faults might be in play here. Your best bet is to request a front end inspection/diagnostic during which the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you insofar as identifying the root cause(s) and estimating the repair for you.

My cars makes a rhythmic tapping noise while idling and the noises accelerates and loud end when my rpms go up,
ANSWER : Without listening to the noise myself and going on what you describe then I would have to say it is an engine piston rod knocking inside the motor. You should have a mechanic like one from YourMechanic listen to the noise and see if the engine needs internal repairs.
