Where would be the best place to find a used vehicle, and what things should I be looking out for when getting a used vehicle?

I'm looking for a new vehicle and would like recommendations on where I could find the best deal for a used car.

I'm also looking for things that I should be looking out for that I can catch right away to prevent wasting money and time on vehicles that are not worth my time.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there. This is a great question since I just went through this process myself to get a used truck for my job. My first suggestion is to first get a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic, like one from YourMechanic. The mechanic could possibly find a problem that may be very expensive and save you from buying an unreliable car.

To answer your two questions: "Where is the best place to buy one"? The best place to buy a used vehicle is where you can find a fair price without compromising reliability and quality. You may find an individual or a dealer that has a great deal. My vehicle was from an individual that needed a car for their job and had to get rid of his truck. They had all the service records and seemed to be very honest. I checked and found the vehicle to be a great price and a perfect match for what I was looking for.

Be wary of a very underpriced vehicle. Before you go looking for car, get online prices to get an idea of what it should cost you. Some dealers have great prices when cash and checks are brought forth. Do your research, I looked at several vehicles before finding one that did not have major potential problems. Some of the major things to look out for are: Engine, transmission, cooling system, major under carriage rust, warning lights on the dash, tires and brakes. All these may cost quite a bit to repair.

Id like to purchase a car but i want to know how much it would cost to get the timing belt fixed on the vehicle.
ANSWER : Hello. Unfortunately if the timing belt brakes it is not usually as simple as just installing a new one on this vehicle. Most of the time when the timing belt brakes on this engine the pistons will contact the valves bending them. This would require that the cylinder heads be removed and the head rebuilt so this would be quite an expense. It really then depends on how cheap you are getting the vehicle for.

Is there a way to find what past work has been done on my used vehicle?
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. There is not really a way to tell when and if the spark plugs were changed. A good mechanic, however will be able to remove them without breaking them and tell you whether or not they need to be replaced. A Carfax will generally not go into detail as to the specific parts that were replaced. If you would like help, consider having an expert automotive technician from YourMechanic come to your home or office to inspect and diagnose this issue for you, and make or suggest any repairs as needed.

jeep won’t get out of park and dash instruments not working.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle is likely going to be having electrical issues pertaining to a fuse, relay, or fusible link. When multiple systems are experiencing issues, there is typically something they have in common that has failed. In your particular situation, double check the fuses. If you are confident the fuses and relays are fine, then locate the fusible link from the battery. It is designed to "blow" or "pop" much like a fuse does when there is an electrical pulse of some kind (like a short). Replacing the fusible link is going to be the only way to fix the issue. Luckily it is generally an easy repair if you are comfortable with wiring. For more help resolving the issue, contact our service department to schedule an appointment.

What’s the difference between welding catalytic converters in place and placing a sleeve with clamps on it?
ANSWER : Hi there. It is okay to replace a catalytic converter with using clamps and sleeves. However, you will need to make sure that there is no exhaust leaks. An exhaust leak before any oxygen sensor will cause the engine light to come on as the computer thinks that the catalytic converter is not working properly. It is best to have one welded on but if you cannot have it welded on, you can clamp it on with no leaks. If you need further assistance with your catalytic converter replacement, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

I have a MB WDB2011281F343389-0 and I know it: It would be advantageous to place an intercooler and how to get a design for this?
ANSWER : Admittedly, the 190D is not a big performer, so it’s understandable that you would want to do something to improve the power, but I don’t think there is much out there for that car. If you are determined, however, there are a number of turbo performance sites out there that would get you started. Among the 201 bodied Mercedes, the only real performer is the gasoline powered 16 valve version. There is a lot of aftermarket available for that.

When I start my 2012 Honda Accord gas just pours out and it looks like it’s coming from the square box looking thing on the driver
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. There are several components in the fuel system that will only be pressurized when the vehicle is running. The best way to find the leak is with a visual inspection. From there you can decide how you want to go about replacing the faulty component. Unfortunately where you see the leak surface is not always where the leak is coming from. If the leak is being spotted at a low point, then it may be running down from somewhere higher. There are fuel lines that run along the driver’s side of the vehicle, and the leak may be running down them. Look for any physical damage. Check the connections on the lines, as they can become damaged, or even have a bad gasket. Only further inspection will tell. I have a 2011 Chevy Aveo LT. When I have the AC on at idle the vehicle overheats. What could be some things to look at? The radiat
ANSWER : Hi there. An overheating problem while idling could be caused by multiple issues, ranging from sludge that is clogging the coolant lines, to a radiator fan that is not activating as well as it should. It is also possible that your coolant has more water than coolant. It’s recommended to have a 50 / 50 ratio of coolant to distilled water for optimal cooling. If the vehicle is due to have coolant system flushed, I would start with this and see if it resolves your problem. Otherwise, it would be recommended to have a professional mechanic complete an overheating inspection to determine why this is happening.
