I think you’re referring to the tie rods which connect the rack and pinion to the steering knuckle, but I’m not sure. Since a broken tie rod can result in loss of steering, they are always checked during safety inspections. Tie rod replacement often requires the use of special tools and is a job best left to professionals. YourMechanic is an excellent choice for the job, since we come to your home or office.

Engaged every time you turn your steering wheel, tie rods are found on each front wheel and connect the steering gear to the steering knuckle. Simply put, you can`t steer your car without tie rods.
When your tie rods go bad, the symptom you`re most likely to experience first is a vibration or shaking sensation in your steering wheel. You may also hear associated clunking and rattling noises, especially when turning the vehicle at low speeds. These sounds are caused by tie rods that are starting to wear out.
The location of the boot release button varies from car to car, but it is usually located on the driver`s side, either on the door panel or on the dashboard. To open the boot from the outside, simply press the boot release button or lever. This will cause the boot latch to disengage, and the boot lid will pop open.
Remove shift boot by carefully squeezing the base of the boot from the back side towards the front side. You may need to carefully slide a thin flathead screwdriver between the base of the boot and the console. Remove the ebrake boot by squeezing the sides together near the front side of the boot.
A wrench, a ratchet set, needle nose pliers, mallet or hammer, grease gun and an inner tie rod tool are needed to remove the inner or outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckle or ball joint depending on which tie rod end.
To do this, you will twist the outer tie rod end off of the spindle of the inner tie rod end. Turn it counterclockwise to loosen. Remember to count exactly how many turns it takes you so that you can tighten the replacement the same number of turns.

Replaced sway bar links and bushings. Still making a clunking sound. Sway bar feels loose when pulled on and can hear the sound.
ANSWER : You should not be able to physically manipulate the sway bar. If you are able to do so, there is something wrong with the bar, the links, bushings, the attachment to the frame or other suspension components. Whatever the fault is, it should be fairly obvious on inspection. To speculate, it is possible that "aftermarket" parts have been used, ones that just simply don’t fit. Please feel free to schedule a sway bar inspection/diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you promptly and professionally. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Could a bad sway bar bracket and a dry rotted bushing be causing the pop sound I hear? 2002 Saturn SC2
ANSWER : Hello – the popping noise could be the sway bar mount bushings, and you would certainly want to replace them if there are rotted or not holding the sway bar firmly. The popping sound could also be the strut bearings. Disconnecting the sway bar links, then turning the steering wheel while the car is sitting, and listening for the popping noise should help confirm the source of the noise. (If the noise goes away after this test, you have confirmed that it is the sway bar bushings.) I recommend a steering and suspension inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Hatchback needs sway bar replaced
ANSWER : Hello. There is only one front sway bar on the vehicle. The sway bar is connected on both ends with link pins. There are two of those so that may be what he is talking about. They should always be replaced in pairs so you may be hearing the old one making noise. I would have it replaced also if that is what is recommended.

How do you avoid the upper and lower A arm bushings from melting on a 1970 GS 455?
ANSWER : Hi there – yes, this is a very large engine, in a moderately-sized place, with lots of heat transfer issues! As you suggest, heat shields, or wrapping the exhaust manifold (headers?) with "heat wrap" to keep the heat inside the exhaust, is the best alternative. Although you could go to polyurethane control arm bushings, this would be a less comfortable ride, with virtually any surface irregularity of the road transmitted to the chassis. Try heat shields or exhaust wrap first. Good luck!

Supportive bar attached to brake pedal interrupts proper braking process
ANSWER : It’s possible to have someone alter the brake pedal or adapt a brake pedal from a different vehicle. You may call around to some customization shops to see if anyone is interested in taking on the project. But first, I would try reaching out to the selling dealer with your concern – especially since it is a new model. Good luck.
