Truck lost power when ignition turned off.

My truck didn't have any prior symptoms. I went to start the truck and the "battery was dead. I had a hard time jumping the vehicle and got it to start. I got home and turned it off and attempted to start again with negative results. The fuse box was making a clicking sound and I think it was the 5 pin fuse. I pulled it out and it stopped clicking. Any suggestions? I haven't tested the battery yet..

My car has 161000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

A no start diagnostic, performed by a certified Mechanic, will identify the root cause. The first to do is perform a load test on the battery once the battery is fully charged. If the battery fails the load test, that could explain the no start condition but, of course, even after you install a new battery you have to test the output of the charging system so that you can be sure that the new battery is being properly charged. If the new battery does not resolve the starting difficulty, and if that difficulty includes failure of the starter motor to operate, then the starter circuit, as well as starter motor, would have to be diagnosed. As far as which battery to get, "Consumer Reports" has very comprehensive ratings of car batteries and the best practice is to simply buy a recommended battery from their list. How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Dead or Weak Battery

The battery provides the electrical power needed to start the engine. If the battery is dead or weak, it may not provide enough power, causing the engine to turn over but not start.

If your Ford F-150 has no power when accelerating, there is no need to fear. Many common issues can cause this to happen. Catalytic converter clogs, clutch faults, transmission issues, bad torque converters, and gear slippage are all causes of the power lack.
The most common reasons a Ford F-150 key won`t turn are a binding steering column/lock, an ignition switch issue, or a problem with the ignition key. Search our network of RepairPal Certified shops near you to speak with a technician about your issue.
The cause of this problem is usually one of 3 things – a failed starter motor, a bad connection between the battery and starter motor, or a blown fuse (if present) in line between the starter and the battery.
Why won`t my car start but I have power? If you attempt to start up your car but the engine won`t turn over and the dashboard lights up, then you most likely have an issue with your battery. You could have a damaged or corroded battery terminal, which is stopping the engine from starting up when you fully turn the key.
There are several causes for your car to lose power significantly while accelerating. The most typical causes of a car not accelerating while driving include a faulty sensor, contaminated fuel or air filters, or a faulty timing belt.
Why does my car not accelerate when I push the gas? A car not accelerating properly can be caused by a number of things. It could be due to the throttle body, gas tank, spark plugs, or the ECU. It could also be because you have a dirty air filter or a clogged fuel filter.
Failing Battery or Starter Motor

If a battery is low on energy, or if the connections are loose, your engine may be able to crank, but it may not start–or it may take several tries. Similarly, a starter motor that`s beginning to fail may still crank the engine, but won`t be powerful enough for it to start.

I parked my truck for 5-10 mins. Tried to turn it on, now it wont start, called a tow tow truck 15-20mins later my truck turned on
ANSWER : It is very likely that you have a powertrain control module failure. This can happen often on many GM vehicles. I would recommend having the powertrain control module tested and replaced as necessary in order to resolve this issue. After the powertrain control module is replaced, a reflash procedure will be required so that the vehicle can relearn all of its primary engine data. Once the reflash is completed, your vehicle should no longer have this issue.

Key turns freely in the ignition but won’t start the vehicle. Accessory power remains on unless the battery is disconnected.
ANSWER : The ignition switch or linkage to the switch is broken. The ignition switch needs to have the small linkage from the back side of the key lock cylinder to turn the switch to start and run the vehicle.

Have the ignition switch removed and inspect the linkage and switch to see if one or both switch and linkage needs replaced. If you need assistance with this, one of our mobile technicians would be happy to come to your location to diagnose the issue with your ignition and make the necessary repairs.

You will need a trained mechanic to work on the steering column of the vehicle with air bags due to the air bag system will need to be deactivated before service on the column switches.

Engine turned off but inside of car still on, now engine won’t turn back on.
ANSWER : Hi there. The symptoms you’re describing with your boyfriend’s 2002 Grand Cherokee appear to be related to a broken or worn out ignition switch or relay. The ignition switch on the inside of the steering column is attached to multiple electronic connections that send signals to a relay box; which in turn, sends the signal to the individual components. The issue could be related to the ignition switch, the relay, or any of the components in between. If you want to have the fault pinpointed in person, I would have this starting issue inspected by a trained professional to ensure that the correct repair is made.

my truck when I turn the key I have no power but when I jump it it starts up.
ANSWER : If you have a new, fully charged battery, and the starting system still does not function, there are actually only a relatively limited number of causes. Broadly, either the starter motor/solenoid assembly is faulty or the electrical circuit supplying the motor has a fault. That circuit begins at the battery and includes grounds, wiring (some of which is very heavy cabling), fuses, relays, the ignition switch and terminations. Basically, the starter is either getting power or it isn’t. If the starter motor is getting power but it doesn’t work, the starter is condemned and replaced. Alternatively, if there is no power to the starter, then the circuit is traced until the fault in the circuit is found. Notably, faults can include high resistances, due to corrosion, wire strand breaks, or loose terminals, which can only be diagnosed using a voltage drop test. If you desire that a certified mechanic resolve this promptly, please simply request a no start diagnostic and the responding mechanic will get it diagnosed and repaired for you. When I turn ignition on no power anywhere. No turnover or crank. Lights don’t come on.
ANSWER : Hello there, many faults will cause your 1987 Chevrolet Camaro to not start or have any power. The most common faults are the battery, battery cable, ignition switch, battery terminal, or a wiring harness fault. If the vehicle started properly before the ignition was removed and after the repair was completed the problems started then the fault may be related. A qualified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, will be able to diagnose your car starting issue and perform any repairs required.

Put key in ignition. Lights and everything come on for a second, then went off as I turned the key. Now no power, key stuck
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. This sounds like your battery cable connections are corroded or loose at the battery. Try to see if the battery connections are loose by wiggling them and see if power returns. If power returns, then have the cables removed, cleaned, and reconnected to test the battery. Hope this helps and best of luck!

ANSWER : Hi there. Once you start your Ford Explorer, the job of the battery is pretty much done; as the engine and all accessories are powered by the alternator after the car is running. This is why the battery being disconnected didn’t shut off the Explorer. It is highly probable that the ignition relay is faulty or stuck open. The best way to resolve this problem however is to have a professional mobile mechanic come to your location to complete a detailed ignition system inspection on your Ford.
