Causes of a jammed/stuck fuel door:
Damaged release cable – In most vehicles, a cable runs from your fuel door lever to the fuel cap door. If this cable snaps or becomes loose, there will be no connection and the fuel door will not open. It will need to be replaced in order to open your fuel door.
In many circumstances, the problem that causes a gas cap to be stuck is caused by one of three things: A mechanical defect in the gas cap. User error on installing the gas cap. A mechanical defect in the gas tank filler neck.

When refilling gas tank, gas overflows before tank is full.
ANSWER : The most common cause of this type of problem is when the fuel filler neck’s inner tube comes off of the neck itself. You will need to have the filler neck removed to check to see if the inner tube was knocked off from someone trying to get fuel out of tank with a siphon hose and managed to knock the hose off. This causes the tank to not get filled properly and the inner hose can get caught in the fuel sender causing wrong readings.
If you’d like to get this fixed, consider YourMechanic, as a certified technician can help you service your fuel filler neck and ensure that your fuel gauge functions normally. Good luck.

Faulty gas gauge or sending unit?
ANSWER : This is a problem likely related to your fuel tank sending unit. This is a small float type component inside your fuel tank that measures the level of the fuel inside the tank. As the fuel level drops, the float level changes and sends a signal to the car’s computer which then displays the reading on the fuel gauge in your dash. If you need assistance with this, I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose the issue and repair your fuel sending unit as necessary.

ANSWER : The switch you are referring to is vended with the required electrical and fuel schematic (I just looked in the box) that answers your installation question. If you want an advance view, here is a link as well. Yes, you need a return line and just refer to the aforementioned link. If you are retrofitting back to OEM, I strongly encourage you to buy the original Factory Service Manual (FSM). There are lots of details attending this system and obviously it is difficult to recount it all here. The FSM will make your life much easier and you can then make sure your installation is perfect. Alternatively, YourMechanic can dispatch a certified mechanic and perform the whole retrofit and check out if you desire. Just request and schedule a generic service such as fuel pump service and the mechanic will come to your location and estimate the parts and labor required. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
The car has trouble starting after gas tank is filled up
ANSWER : When you fill your gas tank, a lot of fumes build up in the fuel tank and usually excess fumes come out of the fuel filled tube and out to atmosphere or into a recovery system in the fuel pump handle.
You may have a purge valve that is not sealing correctly and the fumes are going into your engine causing your engine to be flooded with fumes while you are refueling. You can help your car start by holding the throttle wide open to get extra air into the engine to get it started, and then letting off the gas once it starts. This is only a way to get it started after refueling until you get the purge valve replaced to fix the problem. If the problem persists, have a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, diagnose your car’s hard starting problem to verify what needs to be done.
A shop in another state replaced leaking gas tank from a junkyard and it cost me $800. I’m still having issues.
ANSWER : Hi there. The issue could be the vent valve on the fuel tank. The valve is designed to let out air but not fuel. The hose to the valve could have came off and caused the valve to crack or become damaged. Also, if your fuel tank has only one strap on it, it is possible that the fuel filler neck is coming apart causing the fuel to drip out due to the fuel tank being at a strange angle. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you repair the fuel tank and any hoses that may be cracked or split.
