Transmission in and out of overdrive

My transmission jumps in and out of overdrive had this problem before but stop for almost a year can get bad at times when this happen the cruise control stops working or when the cruise control is on it shuts off when this starts shift out great I'm thinking sensor but not sure or which one or how it can be tested don't want to get into guessing

My car has 178000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi and thanks for your question. The cruise control is set with the engine speed and transmission gear selection. Check the fuse to the cruise control to see if it is blown. There could be two things going on.

The cruise control switch could be having a crossed wire or short inside it. The other problem is the transmission overdrive solenoid could be getting hot and causing the clutch to slip in and out of overdrive.

I recommend having a certified professional, like one from YourMechanic, help you diagnose your cruise control issue for an accurate repair.

Q: The transmission keeps dropping out of overdrive.

If the transmission is coming out of overdrive and back into overdrive, either the downshift solenoid has an internal leak or there is an internal issue with the transmission overdrive clutch. Check the downshift solenoid and see if it`s functioning.

With an automatic transmission, overdrive is most often an intuitive function initiated by the ECU when the vehicle reaches the proper speed. In the case of manual transmissions, overdrive is the highest gear of the transmission but has to be engaged by the driver.
Automatic overdrive is a system that allows an engine to run at lower RPMs when cruising consistently at highway speeds. At the push of a button or the position of a shift lever, a driver can direct the transmission to engage overdrive mode.
You ask if the cruise control will mess up your transmission. The simple answer is, no.
Possible causes of no overdrive include a faulty transmission range switch, valve body, faulty overdrive brake, or faulty ECM. Faults codes should be read out with a scanner, and statuses read.
Make sure you`re using the latest version of the OverDrive app by going to the App Store and checking for updates. Close the OverDrive app completely by swiping it up from your app switcher. Restart your device. Contact support for more help, and let them know you tried all the steps in this article.
Switching the overdrive off on the Villager only effects the transmission`s ability to shift into overdrive – it effectively becomes a three-speed transmission, the top gear being direct drive.
Technically speaking, a direct drive is more efficient in top gear than an overdrive due to its ability to transmit power directly through the main shaft with minimal parasitic losses.
Overdrive is the highest drive gear used for maximum fuel economy during highway driving. Cruise control is used to maintain a constant speed during long-distance highway driving to prevent leg fatigue from pressing the gas pedal constantly.
Use Overdrive Gears

When you use overdrive gearing, your car`s engine speed decreases. Using overdrive saves fuel and reduces engine wear.

Damaged Speed Sensor

That`s right, it senses speed (specifically, how fast your vehicle is traveling). A damaged speed sensor may cause the cruise control not to work properly due to inaccurate readings. Since a damaged speed sensor can also cause problems with the speedometer, it should be fixed right away.

Hi, thanks for writing in. The cruise control uses some of the same sensor inputs the transmission uses and can indeed affect the transmission and cruise control. If the transmission is slipping then the cruise control may not control the speed steady.
When the overdrive gets turned off, the car will not allow the transmission to operate in the highest gear but limits it to a lower gear to increase friction to ensure safety and save fuel. Before enabling or disabling overdrive, you should carefully identify the situations in which you might use it.
If your overdrive is working, the engine speed should fall by 500 or more rpm without a reduction in the vehicle`s speed.
OD light flashing indicates a problem with the transmission. The problem could be a transmission mechanical, hydraulic or electrical in nature. Overfilling can cause the fluid to foam and foam in the fluid can cause all kinds of symptoms. Explorers have had transmission issues over the years.
Line pressures are affected by dirty transmission fluid, low fluid level, a clogged line, or faulty transmission pump can cause the transmission to slip. A bad sensor or solenoid could cause a shifting problem and that is a relatively easy fix by a qualified technician.
Symptoms of a bad overdrive switch:

Transmission won`t shift into overdrive. The driver is unable to disengage overdrive.

Overdrive as a definition is simply having a faster transmission output shaft speed than the input rotation speed of the input shaft from the engine. This means torque is effectively being multiplied in a positive sense so being `overdriven`, creating a more effortless driving experience.

However, in general, it`s probably not a good idea to tow in overdrive because the transmission could overheat and cause damage.

Relevant Questions and Answers :

the most relevant questions and answers related to your specific issue

The transmission keeps dropping out of overdrive.
ANSWER : Hi there. If the transmission is coming out of overdrive and back into overdrive, either the downshift solenoid has an internal leak or there is an internal issue with the transmission overdrive clutch. Check the downshift solenoid and see if it’s functioning. To do this, slow down the vehicle and see if the rpm’s slightly raise up as the vehicle descends to a stop. If the rpm’s are not raising up as the vehicle is slowing down, then I recommend replacing the downshift solenoid. If the rpm’s raise up, then there is an internal part failure in the transmission. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose your transmission.

2013 Ford Focus Transmission Issue. Is it worth keeping the car?
ANSWER : Hi There,
This is a known issue in this generation Ford Focus and some Fiestas with the "Power Shift" transmission and there have been numerous recalls and lawsuits. Although, it is would be difficult to determine how much longer your transmission will last given the fact that you have many new parts, I would not recommend junking the car as it may still provide some valuable life left for you. I would recommend taking it to the dealer to see if these parts may be covered under the recall.

There is automatic transmission fluid in a manual transmission. Is it okay to leave or do I need manual transmission fluid?
ANSWER : This would depend on what the manufacturer recommends. Many manual transmissions do take automatic transmission fluid. If your transmission has ATF in it, it is very likely that it is supposed to have that in there. If not, it is likely that the transmission would not function properly with the wrong fluid. Many manual transmissions will also take engine oil as a lubricant. The best way to know for sure is to check your owner’s manual or call your local General Motors dealership to inquire.

Kia Optima 2004 v6 LX new engine old transmission no problems before with transmission now my transmission is shifting a high rpm
ANSWER : Hi There,
This may be an issue related to the communication of the PCM and the TCM (Transmission control module). As you may know, the TCM relies on the PCM to transmit information related to RPM’s, which the TCM then uses to determine when to direct the transmission to shift. The transmission control module has various sensors such as vehicle speed sensors, wheel speed sensors, throttle position sensors, turbine speed sensor, and transmission fluid temperature sensors that all direct information to it in order for it to perform it’s function. Other functions controlled by the TCM are components such as a kick down switch, traction control system, and cruise control module. Any of these may also affect the way the transmission control module performs and controls the transmission and the shifting of your vehicle. I would suggest having a professional from Your Mechanic come to your location to properly diagnose your transmission problem.

Transmission fluid comes up out of the transmission vent tube attached to the transmission dipstick tube
ANSWER : Hi there. Fluid seepage out of the vent tube can sometimes be normal, but can also be caused by overfilling. Has a service been performed recently? Perform a fluid level and condition inspection by having the engine at idle, on a level surface, warmed up engine, and remove the dipstick and cleaning it with a shop towel. Reinsert the dipstick and fully remove to a horizontal position for inspection. Make sure the fluid is not milky, very dark, or has contamination. The level should be in the safe zone marked on the stick.

Have an inspection by a qualified technician determine if any problems truly do exist and provide you with some assurance. YourMechanic has several technicians available that can assist you with a transmission leak inspection and can perform a transmission fluid service if needed.

Can too much transmission fluid cause speedometer malfunctions?
ANSWER : Hi there. In most cases when you overfill the transmission fluid it can cause excessive foaming of the fluid or possible internal component failure due to excessive pressure inside the hydraulic lines. Sensors like the speed sensors however are rarely impacted by this situation. However, in regards to the possibility of probability of this; I would say perhaps a 10% chance.

Police interceptor makes grinding sounds
ANSWER : The noise is coming from the internal transmission bearing or overriding clutches. Not all of these parts may have been replaced when the transmission was overhauled.

I can only recommend having a qualified transmission mechanic come and listen to the grinding noises and other problems you are having. Just the fact that you disabled the overdrive for the transmission could have caused undue stress to the transmission and should be fixed also.

Can I add Lucas oil "transmission fix" to my transmission fluid to see if it helps my issue.
ANSWER : Adding an additive to the transmission to try and fix a problem will not work in most instances and should only be used as a last resort before getting a transmission overhaul.
