My car has 270000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
This may be a result of low transmission fluid or potentially a faulty transmission control module. A faulty transmission control module may cause a delay in acceleration or erratic shifting of gears. The transmission control module has various sensors such as vehicle speed sensors, wheel speed sensors, throttle position sensors, turbine speed sensor, and transmission fluid temperature sensors that all direct information to it in order for it to perform it’s function. Other functions controlled by the TCM are components such as a kick down switch, traction control system, and cruise control module. Any of these may also affect the way the transmission control module performs and controls the transmission and the shifting of your vehicle. I would suggest having a professional from Your Mechanic come to your location to properly diagnose your transmission problem.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

All versions of the Taurus use variations of the Ford 6-speed 6F automatic transmission.
Those include 2002, 2003, and 2005. For a vehicle that`s been in the industry as long as the Taurus, there are only three years that stand out among the rest as being worrisome. The 2003 Ford Taurus has the most complaints out of all of them, with transmission problems being chief among them.
The 5G Taurus used a new six-speed automatic transmission (jointly developed with General Motors), in contrast to the Aisin six-speed used in the Five Hundred, and was no longer equipped with the CVT.
You can find your vehicle`s transmission on your window sticker. It will be listed under Vehicle Description on top of the window sticker.
Power in the 3.5L V6, standard in non-SHO models, was up to 288 hp and got 19/29 MPG in FWD models, while getting 18/26MPG in AWD models.
The only other current Ford models that use continuously variable transmissions are its hybrid models including the Ford Fusion Hybrid, the Ford C-Max, and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid.
Two different V6 engines are available, the old overhead-valve Vulcan V6 and the modern dual overhead-cam all-aluminum Duratec V6. Both are 3.0-liter engines, but the Duratec is more sophisticated and much more powerful. All models come with four-speed automatic transmissions. LX and SE are powered by Ford`s Vulcan V6.
Likewise, the CVT transmission has been replaced by a new 6F six-speed automatic. This new powertrain makes the Taurus a whole lot more fun to drive than the ill-conceived Five Hundred was.
All of the transmission shift solenoids are located inside the transmission oil pan on the valve body.
Some other things to look out for are that some cars have CVT written on the transmission dipstick. Others even have a CVT badge on the car. Often, there will be no 3,2,1 on the gearshift gate, with only P, N and D. If buying from a dealer, ask the question and they are obliged to tell you.
Honda: The Civic Type R, Honda Fit (with the manual option), Honda Passport, Pilot, Ridgeline and the Odyssey are not equipped with CVTs. Hyundai: The Sonata, Ioniq, Veloster, Palisade, Santa Fe and Tucson are not equipped with CVTs. Infiniti: The QX30, QX60, Q50, Q60 and QX80 are not equipped with CVTs.
Some OEMs still use the same 10-digit VIN patterns for automatic and manual transmission vehicles, meaning that VIN alone will not be enough to determine the vehicle`s transmission type.
Check the Owner`s Manual

As with many things on your car, you can find just about any mechanical or technical detail about the vehicle by looking in your owner`s manual.

3.5-liter Twin-Turbo V6 – This is the most powerful engine option available when buying a used Ford Taurus sedan.
Model Overview

Standard power comes from Ford`s 288-horsepower, 3.5L V6, coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission. A 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder is optional and makes 240 hp and 270 ft-lb of torque. With this engine, the Taurus is capable of 31 mpg on the highway.

Depending on the vehicle and the driver, a CVT can provide a smoother driving experience when comparing it to a traditional automatic. According to Carfax, one of the most significant advantages to having a CVT is that they are often more fuel-efficient than a regular automatic.
A continuously variable transmission does not have individual gears, instead, it has one gear that is variable for all driving conditions. Unlike ordinary automatic transmissions, drivers will not feel the shift from one gear to the next.
This transmission is part of a joint-venture between Ford Motor Company and General Motors to design and engineer two transmissions, a longitudinal 10-speed transmission and a transverse 9-speed trans-axle. Each company will manufacture its own unique version of the transmissions in their own factories.
A CVT doesn`t use any gears at all. Instead, they rely on two cone-shaped pulleys to transfer power from the engine, through the transmission, and to the drive wheels.
The 2019 Ford Taurus SHO features a standard 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that offers 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque while getting up to 16 city MPG and 24 highway MPG when paired with all-wheel drive – the only drivetrain available for the 2019 Taurus SHO.
All 2005 Taurus trim variations have 155 horsepower.
Transmission ID numbers were three digits long from 1951-`54 and started with “1P”; 1955 and newer Ford-O-Matic ID numbers were four letters and started with “P.” The ID number will tell you if you have the small, 97⁄8-inch case or the medium, 107⁄32-inch Merc-O-Matic case.
The 2010 Ford Taurus comes standard with a 3.5-liter V6, six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
You can easily determine whether your vehicle is equipped with a CVT transmission or another automatic transmission. If, under acceleration, the engine RPMs do not change over a wide speed range, but the car still gets faster, then your car probably has a CVT transmission.

2013 Ford Focus Transmission Issue. Is it worth keeping the car?
ANSWER : Hi There,
This is a known issue in this generation Ford Focus and some Fiestas with the "Power Shift" transmission and there have been numerous recalls and lawsuits. Although, it is would be difficult to determine how much longer your transmission will last given the fact that you have many new parts, I would not recommend junking the car as it may still provide some valuable life left for you. I would recommend taking it to the dealer to see if these parts may be covered under the recall.

There is automatic transmission fluid in a manual transmission. Is it okay to leave or do I need manual transmission fluid?
ANSWER : This would depend on what the manufacturer recommends. Many manual transmissions do take automatic transmission fluid. If your transmission has ATF in it, it is very likely that it is supposed to have that in there. If not, it is likely that the transmission would not function properly with the wrong fluid. Many manual transmissions will also take engine oil as a lubricant. The best way to know for sure is to check your owner’s manual or call your local General Motors dealership to inquire.

Can too much transmission fluid cause speedometer malfunctions?
ANSWER : Hi there. In most cases when you overfill the transmission fluid it can cause excessive foaming of the fluid or possible internal component failure due to excessive pressure inside the hydraulic lines. Sensors like the speed sensors however are rarely impacted by this situation. However, in regards to the possibility of probability of this; I would say perhaps a 10% chance.

Kia Optima 2004 v6 LX new engine old transmission no problems before with transmission now my transmission is shifting a high rpm
ANSWER : Hi There,
This may be an issue related to the communication of the PCM and the TCM (Transmission control module). As you may know, the TCM relies on the PCM to transmit information related to RPM’s, which the TCM then uses to determine when to direct the transmission to shift.

Transmission fluid comes up out of the transmission vent tube attached to the transmission dipstick tube
ANSWER : Hi there. Fluid seepage out of the vent tube can sometimes be normal, but can also be caused by overfilling. Has a service been performed recently? Perform a fluid level and condition inspection by having the engine at idle, on a level surface, warmed up engine, and remove the dipstick and cleaning it with a shop towel. Reinsert the dipstick and fully remove to a horizontal position for inspection. Make sure the fluid is not milky, very dark, or has contamination. The level should be in the safe zone marked on the stick.

Have an inspection by a qualified technician determine if any problems truly do exist and provide you with some assurance. YourMechanic has several technicians available that can assist you with a transmission leak inspection and can perform a transmission fluid service if needed.

Bought a 1999 Chevy Z71 for very cheap. The transmission is out. How should this be fixed?
ANSWER : Hi there. The 4l60e transmission could have two things wrong with it. Either the park arm is not disengaging inside the transmission making the transmission load up but not rotate the drive shaft or the transmission is low on oil. Check the oil on the transmission dip stick and see what the level is. The level must be checked with the engine running. If the oil level is at the full mark, then it is possible that the torque converter may have damaged the pump.

Remove a cooler line and put it into a bucket, and for a brief moment start up the engine and shut it off. If oil sprays out of the cooler line, then the pump is producing pressure. However, if no oil comes out of the cool line, then the pump is not working.

If you need further assistance troubleshooting your transmission, then I recommend having the transmission problem diagnosed by a local expert, such as one from YourMechanic. You will be be able to make a better decision about the car after finding out exactly what’s wrong with it.

Everytime I put car into gear it shuts off the car but idles fine
ANSWER : This sounds like a faulty speed sensor problem. Most cars have two speed sensors (one monitors input shaft and one monitors output shaft) which tell the computer what the gear ratio is of the transmission while in use. If either of these are not working properly, they will cause the computer to shut the car off for safety reasons. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to diagnose your stalling issuee and help you repair it.
