My trac off light and engine light came on at the same time once I started my car this morning and I got it checked twice and they said it was the evap system but I want a third opinion just to be sure
My car's transmission is unknown to me.
Hi there. The Trac Off light is for the traction control. The computer has turned off the traction control for a various reason. The controller could be malfunctioning, the vehicle speed sensor could be malfunctioning, or the wheel speed sensors could be malfunctioning. Since the engine light is on, check for any codes that are stored in the computer for a starting place for diagnosing your traction control being disabled. If you need further assistance with the Trac Off light being on and the engine light being on, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :
Check engine light flashing and traction control light coming on at the same time could be alerting you of a misfire or a malfunctioning traction control system. Malfunctioning vehicle speed sensor or wheel speed sensors could also be causing the lights to come on.
“TRAC OFF” Indicator
Indicates that Traction Control is off. The TRAC system switches the traction control on/off to prevent wheelspin and further downshifting. To turn the TRAC system off, quickly press and release the button. The TRAC OFF indicator should come on.
VSC System OFF and Check Engine Light is On
VSC stands for “Vehicle Stability Control.” It is likely that “Traction Control” will not work while this light is illuminated. On some vehicles, the “skidding vehicle” or “TRAC OFF” light may also be lit as well.
anti-lock brake system or a faulty pedal sensor, then it can cause both (or either) of the traction control or Check Engine lights to come on. Unlike a loose gas cap or a fussy air filter, this one can be quite serious and is one of the reasons why you don`t want to ignore those lit warning lights.
Because the ABS and traction control often share the same module, a problem with one mechanism might be indicated by a light for both. If the brake system is malfunctioning, the traction control light might come on as a result. The light for your ABS might also come on if the brake fluid is low.
The TCS light will turn on and off when the system is activated to give you better traction in bad driving conditions. If it remains illuminated even after you`ve restarted your car, it could indicate a malfunction. In these cases, you should drive with caution and take your Sierra for a check-up when you can.
The check engine light is constantly on: Your vehicle`s onboard diagnostic system has determined something is wrong and needs to be fixed. Although your vehicle may seem to be operating fine, it`s best to bring it in for service as soon as possible to prevent additional issues.
It is safe to drive your Toyota while the VSC OFF light is on, however, we recommend cautious driving, especially in poor weather.
“VSC Off” and “VSC TRAC” lights will often come on when an error code triggers the Check Engine light. It doesn`t necessarily mean there is an issue with those systems. If they all showed up at the same time, it`s likely that diagnosing the cause for the Check Engine light will fix them all.
Press the gas pedal 3 times in quick succession. Then, turn your engine on all the way and let it run for a minute. The TCS and ABS lights should reset and go away if there isn`t any underlying problem with your traction control system.
When this warning indicator light comes on in the dashboard, this could be an indication of several issues such as faulty wheel speed sensors, a faulty steering angle sensor, a faulty rotational speed sensor or a problem with the steering rack.
If the traction control light won`t turn off, there can be some reasons. One reason could be that the fuse for the traction control system has blown. Or it could be that there is a problem with the traction control sensors causing the light to stay on.
Often, the computer will apply the brakes just a little bit to slow that out-of-control tire down until the tread can get some bite on the road and prevent it from slipping. If further steps are required, traction control can even reduce engine power and torque until the tire slows down enough to get a grip.
A failing wheel speed sensor will turn off your vehicle`s traction control, stability control, or any other driver assist feature. Sometimes, a damaged wire could also prevent the sensor from sending data to the control module.
A loose gas cap is one of the most common reasons for the check engine light to go on. Check that your gas cap is screwed on securely and that it`s in good condition. If you have a tank of bad gas in the car, your check engine light may come on.
Sometimes, the check engine light comes on to let you know that there`s a problem with the car`s internal diagnostic mechanism. That means the system could be “finding” a problem that doesn`t exist, or it could be that loose wire systems are creating a false positive in the system.
How long can you drive with the check engine light on? Once you see the check engine light, it is safe to drive with the light on for 50 to 100 miles. This is because if the issue is with the sensors, then this will buy some time for it to reset, turning the check engine light off.

Other common reasons for a Check Engine Light are faulty head gasket, dirty mass airflow sensor, damaged oxygen sensor, faulty emissions control part, a malfunction with the fuel injection system, or defective spark plugs to name a few.
A flashing orange light means that there is a problem that could affect how the car drives or handles, such as an engine misfire. You might be able to feel your car shake, or the engine could suddenly sound different. If this light comes on, you should take your car to be inspected immediately.
This is a sign you should stop driving and have your car looked at by a mechanic as soon as possible. Use your best judgment on whether to call a tow truck or drive yourself to a nearby repair shop. Is the light flashing? In many vehicles, there are two types of check engine lights—a solid light and a flashing light.
If the check engine light illuminates, it will either blink or remain constantly illuminated, depending on the problem. A blinking light, or in some cars a red light instead of a yellow or orange light, indicates a problem that needs immediate attention. Either way, you should have the vehicle checked by a mechanic.
Vehicle Stability Control is, technically, what VSC stands for. When suddenly turning onto slippery roads or swerving, a driver can better control skidding thanks to this system. A warning light on the dashboard will flash when this system is on/activated.
Well, VSA stands for Vehicle Stability Assist and is Honda`s computer system that helps ensure the tires have traction to help keep you on the road. When both the check engine light and the VSA light are illuminated it means that the computer has detected there may be a fault in the system.
