Recently had rack and pinion replaced by backyard mechanic, now having problems shifting out of park? Coincidence or no?

While me and my wife were on vacation my mother in law thought she would surprise us by taking our car to a backyard mechanic because the vehicle was leaking power steering fluid. By the end of the ordeal he had to replace the rack and pinion. Now when we turn the steering wheel it's making a grinding, almost purring like a cat noise. And there's times, especially when the car sits over night or a longer period of time, it's almost impossible to getting out of park. Most recently it took almost 30 minutes of turning the steering wheel and moving it up and down to get it to unlock.

Improper alignment – As with any suspension or steering component, bad steering rack bushings will make it difficult to get your vehicle aligned properly, causing your wheels to wander a bit while driving.
A steering wheel that is hard to turn, or very tight could be a sign that you`re having problems with your rack and pinion. If your gearbox builds up heat, or loses hydraulic pressure from lack of steering fluid, this can be another indicator.
When they perform defectively, it can spell trouble and make your steering faulty and unreliable—this is what happens when the rack and pinion goes out. It is advised not to drive in this condition.
Steering Wheel is Not Straight When the Wheels are Pointed Forward. This is usually due to an alignment issue, but it can also happen if the steering rack was displaced in a crash and the car was fixed poorly at the best of times.
If you feel that your steering wheel is shaking, it could potentially be a worn steering rack problem. The vibration is especially noticeable when you are driving on uneven roads, like on a construction road. You don`t have to speed for the vibration to manifest itself, just regular driving speed would do. A quick tip.
If there is a crack in a line, the power steering rack and pinion can fail. Loose connections: With use, connections in the system may loosen. The vibrations of the automobile and its travels can shake things loose. If maintenance or repairs are completed improperly, this may also result in loose connections.
You could, but it would be a bad idea. The mechanics that change your steering rack will likely set the new parts up as closely as they can to the old parts, but wheel alignments need to be very precise. Driving with an incorrect alignment at best will wear out your tires, and at worst will be dangerous.
It is possible to rebuild the seals on a steering rack, but the process is lengthy and the deeper internal seals are more difficult to change without special tools. Replacement is typically the most cost effective solution.
How often does a steering rack need to be replaced? Eventually, a rack and pinion system will fail from everyday use, but these components are engineered for long-term operation. It will be unusual to have to replace the steering rack before 100,000 miles.
A crooked steering wheel can lead to rapid tire wear, forcing you to replace your tires more frequently than usual and costing you a lot more! Misalignment can also lead to poor gas mileage, as well as an uncomfortable ride and premature tire wear.
This is usually caused by worn steering racks and tie rods. Excessive steering wheel vibration when you accelerate or turn a corner. This is usually caused by faulty or worn tie rods.
Over time, if you don`t get your vehicle aligned, the vibrations will get worse. This can compromise your ability to keep a good grip on your steering wheel and drive safely down the road. If your steering wheel doesn`t stay straight and starts to vibrate when you drive, you need to get your tires aligned.
Damaged or worn wheel bearings

Designed to secure the wheel hub to the vehicle`s suspension, and allow the wheels to turn properly, these safety critical components can cause steering wheel vibration if damaged or not lubricated sufficiently. In this instance, the steering wheel will usually only shake when turning.

Tires out of Balance

This is the most obvious and the most common reason that you might experience a shaking steering wheel. If your tires are out of alignment or out of balance, they may send shakes through your vehicle and to the steering wheel.

If you drive your car on potholes often, you risk damaging its steering rack. Not only that but turning your car carelessly can also do the same damage. When the steering rack gets damaged already, it must be repaired as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will also ruin, among others, the rubber parts.
CAMBER, TOE, & CASTER

Too much inward or outward tilt, also known as negative and positive camber, respectively, indicates improper alignment and will need to be adjusted. Worn bearings, ball joints, and other wheel-suspension parts may contribute to camber misalignment.

Things like hitting potholes, bumping curbs, or even minor accidents are all common causes of one or more of your wheels coming out of alignment. Second, normal wear and tear can all eventually cause your car to come out of alignment.
CAMBER, TOE, & CASTER

Too much inward or outward tilt, also known as negative and positive camber, respectively, indicates improper alignment and will need to be adjusted. Worn bearings, ball joints, and other wheel-suspension parts may contribute to camber misalignment.

Your steering wheel is crooked due to your vehicle being out of alignment. Basically, your steering and suspension systems are not operating at the right angles.

Check Engine light comes on, mechanic replaced o2 sensor but light still comes on.
ANSWER : Hi there:

If the mechanic completed the O2 sensor replacement, reset the codes and the error code was triggered again, it is possible that the catalytic converter is damaged and needs to be replaced. However, it’s also very common for the electrical harnesses that power these sensors to become frayed, damaged or faulty; which can also trigger the check engine light. It’s not advisable to drive a vehicle with a damaged catalytic converter for extended periods of time, as it can cause damage to internal engine components.

Car begins to roll when the shift lever is in park had only starts in the neutral position, just rebuilt the transmission
ANSWER : The neutral start safety switch could be misaligned or a fault in the linkage and./or cable could be contributing to the problem because "Park" is not actually reached when you move the shifter. The whole mechanism from the manual lever on the transmission up to shifter will have to be inspected. The manual lever should be inspected separately inasmuch as you indicate abnormal resistance in certain gear selections. In addition, it sounds like the shift interlock may not be functioning. The recommended service to obtain a diagnosis of all of these issues is a shift linkage/interlock inspection. If you request that service, the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

recently my Safari started "hesitating" or " shifting" roughly when shifting at low speeds. doesn’t do it all the time
ANSWER : Hi there. Many electronically controlled transmissions are computer controlled. With that said, the input signals for the engine can have a direct affect on the transmission behavior. Do no rely on scan tool recommendations because it is just that, a recommendation and not a diagnosis. Think of the scan tool you witnessed as a tool to sell parts, nothing more. A capable scan tool provides more than codes; it provides live data to the technician to aid in the diagnosis. When the computer sees an operating condition that is out of specification it sets a code; it does not know what or why, but only that it is out of spec. The code leads the technician to the system that has the fault; it does not diagnose it. Before you do anything, have the battery tested. A bad cell or low state of health can wreak havoc on an electrical system. I suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts. Your Mechanic has several technicians available that can assist you with a check engine light inspection and a car is shifting hard inspection.

The truck won’t shift out of park so thinking that it’s the park shift interlock solenoid? Is that a good possibility that’s what
ANSWER : Hi there. First thing to check would be, whether the brake lights are functioning at the time it won’t shift out of park. There is a possibility, there is a poor connection at the fuse. It could be, a faulty brake light switch not supplying power to the shift interlock solenoid. There may be, a poor connection or wiring concern. It could be, a faulty shift interlock solenoid. My 2002 Yukon will not shift into park but will shift into all the other gears. Whats wrong?
ANSWER : Hello,
Generally, when a vehicle does not shift into park as you describe, this indicates that a shift linkage has been broken or some other blockage such in the mechanism has caused it to not properly allow the shift linkage to move the transmission into park. Other things that may also cause this are things like a worn out ignition key tumbler which causes the transmission interlock to inadvertently activate when the vehicle is not in neutral. I would suggest having a professional from YourMechanic come to your location to take a look at your vehicle to properly diagnose.

Had the steering rack replaced and now the steering angle sensor is acting up after a front end alignment.
ANSWER : Hi there. If the codes are coming on for the steering angle due to either the sensor failing or the plug not plugged in all the way. Check the harness on the steering sensor and see if its plugged in. If the harness is plugged in and has not moisture on it, then the sensor has probably failed. You can have the vehicle realigned, but if the sensor has failed, it will not correct its self. I recommend replacing the steering angle sensor. If you need further assistance with the steering angle sensor, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Starter turns over whenever I shift over Park or Neutral, intermittent problem.
ANSWER : Hello there, thank you for asking about your 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. There is only one power source that can engage the starter relay and that would be the ignition switch. The ignition switch should not be able to stay engaged unless you feel it binding at times. You also should remove any aftermarket remote start systems that may also cause the problem. If no aftermarket system is on the vehicle then check the wire connector to the ignition switch and replace the switch. Make sure to double check the key lock cylinder does not bind when the ignition switch is off the column. It should move freely. If you would like help doing this, a certified technician from YourMechanic can replace the ignition switch at your home or office.
