Radio Not Turning On

My battery died recently from sitting for too long without a start. When we charged the battery, the radio stopped turning on. We though it was a fuse, however I pulled all fuses out of both boxes and none of them are broken. The Bluetooth connects on the dashboard just fine, but no sound comes out of my speakers and the screen remains black when you turn it on. Any idea what could be happening?

My car has 42000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. From what you describe it would appear that your vehicle’s radio head unit may have failed. If the fuses look good and it is not coming on, along with no sound from the speakers then it may be possible that the unit has failed, perhaps damaged when the battery was charged. I would test to see if there is power going to the head unit and go from there. I would also make sure to check the fuses in both the interior and engine bay fuse boxes, to make sure that none of them are burned out. If you are unsure, I would recommend having a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, visit your location to diagnose what may be causing your electrical issues](https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/electrical-components-are-not-working-inspection).

Blown Fuse

The first thing you should do when your radio stops working is check its fuses and replace any that have blown. Also, if you have an after-market stereo head unit that is meant to be easily removed, be sure to check the back of the unit itself for any fuses.

A car radio can stop working for many reasons: from a lack of power, a blown fuse, faulty wiring, screens, tuners, speakers or displays, or you may just be locked out of your stereo`s security feature.
The most common reason for a car radio to stop working after the battery has gone completely dead is that the radio has an anti-theft “feature” that kicks in whenever battery power is removed. When that happens, all you have to do is enter the right car radio code, and you`re back in business.
A car radio will have at least one fuse to protect the unit from things like power surges or other electrical issues. If too much current is sent to the audio system, this fuse will blow out and disconnect the circuit to save the main radio. On newer models, there are a variety of fuses for the entertainment system.
Press and hold the audio system power button for 5 seconds. A menu may pop up and ask you if you want to reboot the system. If this doesn`t work, turn the vehicle off, open the driver door, close the driver door, and restart the vehicle.
Restart Your Car`s Infotainment System

The reason you`re facing the black screen issue may not even be related to Android Auto on your phone. It could be that your car`s stereo system or head unit is malfunctioning, so you`re unable to use Android Auto. A quick fix for this issue is to restart your car`s head unit.

Today`s car stereos do more than just play music – they are part of a sophisticated infotainment system that connects to your phone, provides directions, and does many other things. That`s why they consume a significant amount of power from your electrical system and can also create a drain on your battery.
This happens when the power and ground wires do not make proper contact with each other. This can cause problems such as not getting enough power to the stereo, when the power output gets too low your radio will go off. So check that all wires are connected firmly with each other to ensure that they are secure.
Turn your car on, but do not start the engine. Turn the radio off. Hold the radio power button down for a few minutes until it resets.
The fuse box in the cab is generally located on the side of the center console near the door or under the steering wheel; the fuse box in the engine compartment is generally on the edge of the engine compartment of the vehicle; the blade fuse in the car radio is generally located on the back of car stereo.
A blown car fuse will usually be caused by too much electrical current flowing through a circuit. This will interfere with many different functions of your vehicle. For example, many of your interior and exterior lights will no longer function properly. The radio and other devices you use will also no longer work.
RF fuse holders are designed to protect costly RF components and systems. These models are available with several different fusing levels (1/16A up to 1.0A). The fuses are field replaceable. The fuses are rated for 4 hours @ 100% current rating and 1 second maximum @ 200% current rating.
Where is the VW radio code located? Your VW radio codes may be located in your owner`s manual within the radio/navigation system section or on the last page. Your VW radio code may otherwise be on your vehicle`s trunk opening, liftgate, or spare tire.
The most common reasons a Volkswagen Passat key won`t turn are a binding steering column/lock, an ignition switch issue, or a problem with the ignition key.
Yes, because the starter motor draws so much current (up as high as 200 Amps for some cars), any non-essential electrical devices are usually shut off until the engine starts, to ensure the starter can do its job.
A car stereo gets its power from the battery. Therefore, if the battery does not work, the stereo may not work. On the flip side, even if the car battery works well, the stereo may have different problems. Read on to know more about what to do when your car stereo does not turn on.
First determine if a capacitor is causing the issue. Disconnect your amplifier`s leads and connect them to the capacitor`s terminals. If you hear buzzing or humming, it`s likely a bad capacitor. If you don`t hear a short when testing for continuity, use an ohm meter or digital multimeter.
It could be a problem with the antenna, speaker, amplifier, or connectivity of wires. Check the radio functions to ensure your audio source is connected to the right input. There are different radio components that work jointly to give an optimal audio experience. The set-up may be incomplete with your radio head unit.
What happens to the radio and other electronics if I have to disconnect the battery? If you have to disconnect the battery in your car, several important systems will lose power. You`ll need to reset the clock, for one thing. You`ll also need to enter the radio code for your audio system when you replace the battery.
The radio itself doesn`t use an awful lot of power, so it`s very unlikely that you`re going to end up with a dead battery from one listening session. On average, a regular car battery that`s powering a regular car radio will generally keep going for a whopping 10 to 12 hours.
It`s great you asked because the answer is yes; you always need to disconnect the battery when installing a car stereo. When working with anything electrical in your car, you want to ensure the battery is disconnected to avoid electrocution.
Parasitic Draws

Issues such as faulty wiring, bad fuses or interior lights that fail to shut off will continue to drain your battery while it`s idle.

As such, when you have a faulty alternator, it won`t manage to keep power long enough. Checking your alternator is the first place to start when dealing with a dead battery. When you have a faulty alternator, a simple action such as turning on your radio could quickly drain your battery.
If you don`t want to pursue this via the dealer or the small claims court then an auto electrical or independent VW specialist may be able to repair the infotainment system without replacing the whole thing.

Engine turned off but inside of car still on, now engine won’t turn back on.
ANSWER : Hi there. The symptoms you’re describing with your boyfriend’s 2002 Grand Cherokee appear to be related to a broken or worn out ignition switch or relay. The ignition switch on the inside of the steering column is attached to multiple electronic connections that send signals to a relay box; which in turn, sends the signal to the individual components. The issue could be related to the ignition switch, the relay, or any of the components in between. If you want to have the fault pinpointed in person, I would have this starting issue inspected by a trained professional to ensure that the correct repair is made.

Dome lights will not turn on when door opened, radio will not turn off when car is off and door is opened.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle is likely having issues with the door switch which activates/shuts down both circuits. This is going to look like a peg in the door frame next to the hinge. The peg that is designed to make contact with the switch behind it may be at fault, or the switch itself may be faulty. It is best considering the circumstances that you replace the entire unit, as they are typically sold as an assembly. It is a rather straight forward repair if you are looking to do it yourself. Simply remove the old switch and reconnect it to the new one. Make sure to unplug the battery before hand. With that said, you can also contact our service department to schedule an appointment, and we can resolve the issue for you.

my 2012 kia sportage turns on just fine but occasionally the back up camera and radio panel will not turn on or turn off while dr
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The intermittent nature of the issue can help us rule out some of the issues that would cause the UVO system to completely fail. You should start by checking the fuses, and make sure they are secure and clean. Secondly you will want to make sure the electrical connections to the system are clean, dry, and tight. After you rule out a wiring connection issue, you may want to try resetting the system with the driver controls. While it is not impossible that the two issues (the UVO and the starting issues) are related, we will want to treat them separately at first. The key will have issues being recognized if there is something blocking the signal. This may mean your cell phone is in the way of the signal, or that there is something blocking the signal at the other end. With a new fob battery, the signal strength should be improved. Try relocating the key fob from your pocket or bag when you push the start button. If this does not improve the issue, and resetting your UVO system does not stop the intermittent failure, then you will want to have the vehicle inspected by a technician.
