Hi there. Typically when the four-wheel drive wants to engage it’s caused by either a failure of the four wheel drive selector switch, or internal differential components as the mechanic suggested. The price to have this type of service can vary based on specifically what is causing the problem; so it’s really hard for us to tell you whether or not the estimate you are receiving is accurate without completing a gear issue inspection at your location.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

The most common reasons a Hyundai Tucson engine makes a ticking noise are low oil level or pressure, an issue with the ignition system, or an exhaust leak.
Typically, a vehicle will start and then quit because of an issue with the fuel or electrical system. It is important to monitor fuel levels as well as warning lights which can signal to the driver that a vehicle may quit unexpectedly.
Any unusual shaking or vibrating forces coming from the engine is cause for concern. It could be something as simple as old spark plugs producing an uneven power delivery, it could be something serious like worn or broken engine mounts, or it could be even more serious in the case of internal engine damage.
Common reasons for this to happen:

Low fuel pressure, dirty or defective fuel injectors, or broken fuel pump: The fuel pump is responsible for transferring fuel from the tank to the engine.

Clicking or Tapping

A click or tap emitted from the top of the engine could indicate several things. On the one hand, it could be fuel injectors ticking away normally or it may be a failed lifter, rocker arm, valve spring, or valve lash adjuster. This scenario mostly plays out on vehicles with a ton of miles.

Car engines have rotating and reciprocating components. Worn-out accessories and bad bearings would make a whining or whirring sound. A problem with one of the reciprocating components, such as pistons, valves, rods, or pushrods, usually makes clunking, clicking, or ticking noise.
Hyundai vehicles are commonly reported as having engine problems, varying from ticking or unusual noises, to stalling, cutting out or seizing.
Faulty Battery

A classic reason why your car starts for a second then dies is battery depletion. The car needs electricity from the battery to start. However, if your car starts then dies immediately, then the fault could be a lack of charging or damaged battery.

There are a range of reasons why your car is juddering when you accelerate. Your vehicle could have dirty fuel injectors, a damaged fuel pump, a blocked catalytic converter, a faulty mass airflow sensor, broken spark plugs, or even an accumulation of moisture.
If your car shakes when accelerating, the source of the issue can range from imbalanced tires to worn-out spark plugs, loose lug nuts, and more. Most of these problems can be handled with a quick (but possibly pricey) trip to the mechanic.
A faulty crankshaft position sensor will be unable to identify the exact piston position, triggering an engine misfire. This causes your car to shut off while driving. A drop in performance, fuel efficiency, rough engine, etc., are some important symptoms of a damaged crankshaft position sensor.
If the vehicle randomly shuts off while driving or stationary, there is usually an issue with the engine. Typical patterns here are issues with the ignition system, mixture preparation or fuel. A known error here is that the vehicle was refueled with the wrong type of fuel.
Hyundai and Kia`s modern engine issues date back to 2015, and the 2011 and 2012 model year Sonata. A class action lawsuit in May of 2015 alleged the Theta engine in the Sonata was defective. In particular, it was claimed the 2.4-liter version of the Theta II engine suffered from connecting rod bearings issues.
Most often, a ticking noise in a Hyundai Elantra when accelerating is caused by low oil pressure, a low oil level, an ignition system problem, or an exhaust leak.
There is a rattling sound. A lax timing chain, or worse, a broken timing chain with loose parts within the engine, will produce a rattling sound when your car is idling. This rattling sound is typically most prominent while the engine heats up and disappears after some time.
In 2021, there was a class action settlement for certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles containing the 2.0L and 2.4L GDI Theta II engines. Specifically, that lawsuit extended the warranty (and offer reimbursements) if the engine experienced a connecting rod bearing failure within the rotating assembly.

Common culprits include a faulty fuel pump or fuel pump relay. A clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pressure regulator is also common on return-type fuel systems. Another often overlooked problem is the vehicle simply being out of fuel. Sometimes the fuel gauge breaks or is inaccurate.
An issue with the mass airflow sensor may manifest itself when a car starts and then stalls soon after starting. Fuel Pump Relay: The fuel pump relay functions much like a fuse for an electric fuel pump. The fuel pump relay engages as the vehicle is started and starts the fuel pump.
A faulty ECU can cause sudden drops in power, fuel efficiency, and spark loss, causing your car to shut off randomly and turn back on. Another common symptom of a faulty ECU is your car stalling and jerking while driving. The check engine light might also light up on your dash.

Can front wheel drive car engine power rear wheel drive
ANSWER : Anything is possible with enough engineering. The changes you are looking at would take major structural changes and would definitely not be an easy job. You could possibly consult a manufacturing engineer to get more details on how this could actually be carried out and whether it would be feasible.

I own a 2000 f150 lariat 4 x4. 5.4 l. Started getting a loud grinding noise front passager brakes. Replaced brakes and wheel
ANSWER : Hi there. While using junkyard or used parts (especially brake or suspension parts) is highly discouraged and can cause major damage, it is unlikely that they caused the aluminum wheel to split in half. In most cases, this is caused by hitting a pothole or other obstruction in the road. A glancing blow against a blunt object like a curb can also cause this type of damage. However, if the brakes came apart or a brake component broke, it could in theory cause the same damage. My advice to you is to not drive the vehicle further until you’ve replaced the brakes and wheels with new components for safety.

Loud repetitive noise coming from front tire in 2 wheel drive, goes away when in 4 wheel drive.
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. Chances are there was an existing issue that was amplified by the tire rotation. There are several parts that will cause similar symptoms. You will want to consider the parts that are under load in 4wd, that are free when in 2wd. This would include the axle and sveral joints. There are a couple of tests that can be done. More damage was likely done driving on dry pavement in 4wd. It was a good step in diagnostics, but should be avoided. 4 wheel drive icon is staying on
ANSWER : If the switch for your four wheel drive has broken and your vehicle is now stuck in four wheel drive, it is very likely that the broken switch is the cause of your issue. I would recommend having this switch replaced to see if these symptoms go away. The reason the vehicle is harder to turn is due to the four wheel drive being engaged. This should also go away once the switch has been replaced. Consider YourMechanic for this switch replacement as it can be completed at your home or office.

How to make front wheel drive car to a rare wheel or all wheel drive
ANSWER : You would be better off trading the vehicle out for a vehicle that has all wheel drive. There is no way to add the additional drive you want.
