P0701 and limp mode

Wrench light came on, went into limp mode wouldn't accelerate. Read codes and only p0701 listed. 2nd time this has happened. Cleaned the throttle body the first time about a month ago. Both times it happened after a heavy rain, yet not during the storm. No problems with acceleration or shifting other than when the wrench light comes on. It is a CVT transmission. Causes for this???

My car has 132000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello – the P0701 is a generic problem code which is set by the transmission, but there should be other codes, because there are other possibilities that will trigger this code. A throttle position sensor, whether dirty or malfunctioning, can also cause this fault in the transmission controller. I would recommend having the car diagnosed for the lack of acceleration by a mobile, professional mechanic. A mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs

A P0701 trouble code indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a malfunction in the automatic control system.
The wrench warning light on Ford vehicles is the powertrain malfunction indicator light. When it illuminates, it means that the computer has detected an issue with your vehicle`s powertrain or four-wheel-drive system.
The 2006 Ford Freestyle comes in three trim levels, SE, SEL and Limited. Each is available with all-wheel drive. All have the same 3.0-liter V6 engine rated at 203 horsepower. All are equipped with a continuously variable transmission, or CVT.
If your vehicle instrument panel displays an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) alongside a stored code P0701, it plainly denotes that an error has been detected by the powertrain control module (PCM) in the transmission control system.
Description : P1701 NISSAN Transmission Control Module Power Supply. Possible causes : – Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM) – Transmission Control Module (TCM) harness is open or shorted. – Transmission Control Module (TCM) circuit poor electrical connection.
What does the wrench light mean? Both of these symbols indicate that your car needs service. Usually, it`s because of some sort of time-based milestone not being met, or there`s a fault with the car that needs professional attention.

Error code P0700 signifies that a malfunction has been detected in your vehicle`s transmission controls. Most modern automobiles feature a specific control module as it relates to the vehicle`s automatic transmission. This module is known as the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
The P0882 code indicates that there`s a problem with the voltage between the transmission control module (TCM) and the engine control unit (ECU).

An indicator light that depicts a wrench paired with an oil can may signal you have a low oil level, or it`s time to change your oil filter. You can check your owner`s manual for additional information about your vehicle`s wrench light and what it means—as well as how you should respond when it turns on.
If you see this indicator light come on in your car, you should take it very seriously, as these parts are extremely complex, and can result in very costly repairs. Generally, this indicator light means a problem has been detected in the automatic transmission (not applicable in manual transmission cars) or transaxle.
Driving with the wrench light on can cause serious engine damage, and could even result in transmission failure. Continuing to drive while this condition exists is not a good idea – see a mechanic immediately.

My car is in limp mode – 1997 Ford Taurus
ANSWER : If you cracked your oil filter and the engine pumped out all the oil and you continued to drive it, you may have damaged the internal bearing of the motor. If you perform an oil and filter change you may be able to start and run the engine, but the damage will have already of been done. Once you start the motor, if you hear engine noise then you will know the engine was damaged and will need major internal repairs or engine replacement. Have a mechanic like one from YourMechanic come and perform the oil and filter change and check for the internal engine damages.

My Mitsubishi Lancer 2005 has a limp mode issue – the car does not erase trouble codes permanently (even by debugging or terminal disconnection)
ANSWER : I see the note where you have previously replaced several components on the transmission already. Do you recall the brand and warranty of these components? If the parts you replaced are still under warranty, you may be able to get new ones. Have the vehicles problem looked over by an experienced professional and test even the parts that were replaced to see if they may have failed prematurely. Computers do fail, but this is pretty rare. Consider hiring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can come by for a closer look at your transmission shifting concerns and offer a more personal diagnosis.

Limp mode was on and I turned off the car. Now limp mode is off but the Check Engine Light is on.
ANSWER : When the car goes into limp mode, generally the reason for this is related to a critical component or sensor detecting a problem that may cause serious damage. There are existing codes in the computer which have been registered as a result of the vehicle going into limp mode. You will need to have the vehicle scanned to determine which codes have been registered and have those corrected in order to get the Check Engine Light to shut off. To avoid any unnecessary repairs, I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to further diagnose your Check Engine Light and repair this.

Cant get my car out of limp mode or "fail safe mode"
ANSWER : The reason "limp mode" has become "unbypassable" is due to the existing codes. The ECT failure, if it exists, may alone account for that because an engine coolant temperature sensor is essentially a master sensor – the value of which must be available and reliable in order for the engine computer to properly control all ignition and fuel outputs. Consequently, based on what you are reporting, an expert would probably first diagnose the code you are getting and continue the diagnostic from there if that sensor checks out OK. If you would like to have this resolved, a certified professional from YourMechanic could diagnose the Check Engine Light and advise on the correct repairs.

Car is in limp mode and making strange sound when beginning to rev.
ANSWER : Hi there:

When the oxygen sensors have a reading that is similar to each other, it is an indication that the catalytic converter is not working as efficiently as it is intended. If the voltage of the downstream oxygen sensor decreases, and begins to fluctuate like the upstream oxygen sensor, it means that the oxygen levels are too high and the Power Control Module will then store the [P0420 trouble code[(https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0420-obd-ii-trouble-code-catalyst-system-efficiency-below-threshold-bank-1-by-jamahl-walker). However, faulty O2 sensors or damaged exhaust system components typically won’t trigger the limp mode to be activated; as that’s usually a transmission fault. If you’re hearing a weird noise, it’s likely you have a hole in the exhaust somewhere that is triggering this OBD-II trouble code.

My car went into limp home mode and I am being told it is the transmission 2010 Ford Mustang
ANSWER : Hello – first thing is to determine what problem codes are setting the Check Engine condition. Low transmission fluid level can cause this condition. In addition, failure of the throttle position sensor is a fairly common cause of this behavior among Ford Mustang owners as well, and much easier and less expensive to repair. For a trusted 2nd opinion, I recommend a loss of power inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

I shifted the lever to drive mode, but it goes to reverse mode. What is the problem?
ANSWER : You are very nearly right. There is a bowden type cable that connects the the shifter to the transmission. It has adjustable ends and one or more of those adjustments has probably worked loose. That or you might need a new shift cable or new bushings at the connections. Either way, you can have the problem conveniently solved by contacting Your Mechanic. They will send a technician to your home or office to check out your shifter and transmission and tell you exactly what you need to repair it. Meanwhile, be very careful with this car, it might not go into park when you expect it to so be sure to set the brake and park it very carefully.
