Overheating

Changed head, valve and Manifold gaskets. Torgued perfectly. New rad. New thermostat. New coolant obviously. New fan relay switch. Bled all air out. No leaks. Upper rad hose get somewhat expanded. Overheating slowly. 30 to 45 minutes…..moves up slow like the car is tryn to fight it. Didnt touch water pump but its not leaking. Fan seems fine. It does go faster after while.

On head and block, those surfaces have to be measured before you apply a head gasket. If they are not flat within around .002 inches, you can get leaks and that alone can account for overheating. It is possible that the water pump impeller is no longer tight on the shaft (a problem on this model if equipped with nylon impeller). If the impeller is slipping, that could be a cause. Also MEASURE drive belt tension and check belt because if the belt is glazed, or otherwise damaged and worn the pump will not turn at the required speed. If you have to change the pump, buy an OEM pump. If the thermostat is not OEM, that can account for the problem as well. If you try a new thermostat, TEST the thermostat before installation. There is always the possibility of an internal blockage in the head/block and there is a possibility of so much scale that normal heat transfer is impeded. If you are sure the head and block were flat, I would start with the water pump and if pump is replaced, either TEST the thermostat (per Factory Service Manual spec.) or buy an OEM thermostat. Finally, the wrong engine ignition timing, too lean operation, and other engine management faults can cause overheating. If the transmission is faulty, that can cause overheating. Also, keep in mind, your temperature gauge could be faulty (sending or receiving)!

Most of the time, overheating is caused by a leak somewhere in the coolant system, such as in the water pump, radiator, or one of the hoses. If you notice that your coolant fluid is low, this is almost certainly the cause. Top off your coolant fluid and drive directly to a mechanic to have the leak fixed.
The most common causes of overheating include low coolant level (including that due to leaks), a faulty thermostat, a plugged radiator, a faulty radiator pressure cap, collapsed hoses, non functioning cooling fans, and a faulty water pump or drive belt.

Turn the vehicle off and locate some heavy-duty gloves, a rag, and some coolant. It should take roughly 15 minutes for your engine to cool down. Once this time has passed, carefully open the hood of the car. Slowly open the radiator cap with your gloves on and the towel held over the cap.
Start your car`s engine and allow it to idle. Look through the radiator filler neck to see if the coolant flows. At this time, it should not be flowing as your car has not reached the operating temperature to cause the thermostat to open. If you find the coolant is flowing, it means the thermostat valve is open.
If you find that you`ve got a car running hot but not overheating there might be a few reasons: Clogged or damaged radiator. Low coolant level. Damaged water pump or thermostat.

ANSWER : Hey there. The next thing you need to do is confirm the thermostat is opening and test to see if the radiator is clogged or not. Begin by warming your car up. Don’t drive it, just let it idle or hold it on a high idle. Depending on the ambient temperature, this can take a half hour or more for the thermostat to open. You will know the thermostat is open by touching the upper radiator hose. The hose that comes off of the thermostat housing. When it begins to get hot, the thermostat is opening. The stat will cycle open and closed during the warm up process. A motor is not fully warm until the stat reaches a point of equilibrium. Meaning, it stays open at a constant amount. If your car begins to overheat and the upper radiator hose does not get hot, you will need to figure out what is going on with the thermostat. It could be installed wrong or even bad. I have had new stats be bad several times.

If the stat opens correctly and your car is fully warm, take it for a quick spin around the block. Come back to a stop in your driveway or other parking spot, turn the motor off, key off, open the hood and reach in and touch the radiator from top to bottom and side to side. You are feeling for cold spots. They will be obviously cold in comparison to the rest of the radiator. It is normal for the lower part of the radiator to be colder than the top. That only means the radiator is cooling as it should.

If after doing these two things your car still overheats, it is time to consider head gasket problems. You can use a block tester kit from your local auto parts store or you can book and appointment with us. Testing for head gasket problems can be cumbersome and only experience will allow you to make an accurate determination. ANSWER : If you changed the radiator and thermostat and still overheats due to no coolant circulation then you have a water pump that is not circulating the coolant. The pump fins can get worn off, unable to pump and circulate the coolant. The radiator fan also needs to be checked for proper operation after the pump is replaced.
