Not turning over spinning

The starter on my car doesn’t always crank. But it happens on about every 22nd time. I can hear the starter spinning fast when this happens. Once in awhile it will crank the engine for a fraction of a second then spin the starter very fast. The car has a 3 month old genuine Mercedes Benz steering lock and ignition switch. But this problem started before I installed the new steering lock and ignition switch. The battery is 2 years old and checks out good. I noticed when the weather is cooler out and rainy the starter spinning happens more often. Could the problem be a bad solenoid, bad sta
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. It sounds like your starter is going bad and needs to be replaced. The starter solenoid is made onto the starter and is most likely causing the problem you are having. At some point the starter is going to stop working completely so it needs to be replaced as soon as possible. If you need help with this repair, have a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, assist with a starter replacement.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

If the engine cranks slowly but doesn`t turn over, your Mercedes probably has a battery issue. When battery power is low or there is corrosion on the terminals, it will negatively affect your power output, and you`ll struggle to start your Mercedes.
These are: Your key fob battery is low or empty. This prevents the Electronic Ignition System (EIS) from functioning. The Driver Authorization System (DAS) is not functioning, and thus failing to verify the key properly when inserted into the ignition.
If the car cranks when you turn the key, but the engine won`t start, it could be because fuel isn`t getting to the engine. One potential reason for this could be dirty fuel injectors. Over time, the fuel injector nozzles can become clogged with rust, corrosion or debris.
Bad starter motor: If you hear a single click when you turn the key, but the engine won`t start, that could mean there`s a problem with the electrical system. The starter motor is responsible for physically turning the engine over and getting the engine to fire. If this is the issue, you`ll need a new one installed.
1 Start motor engages but the engine doesn`t turn

The simplest cause of this sort of fault is a loose or corroded electrical connection. If there is a fault with the internal windings of the starter motor, bad brushes, or other electrical faults, the starter motor may lack the torque to crank the engine.

Why won`t my car start but I have power? If you attempt to start up your car but the engine won`t turn over and the dashboard lights up, then you most likely have an issue with your battery. You could have a damaged or corroded battery terminal, which is stopping the engine from starting up when you fully turn the key.
If you don`t hear clicking when you start the engine, the problem may be a dead battery. If you hear clicking, but the engine doesn`t crank, the starter might not be getting enough electricity. Using your owner`s manual and a voltmeter, you should be able to test functionality.
The car makes a cranking sound, but doesn`t turn over

A) Make sure the fuel tank has fuel in it; it might have leaked out due to untightened bolts, or it might have never been filled in the first place.

Starter motors should make noise when you turn your ignition key fully to activate your car. If you turn the key and do not hear anything, there`s a chance that there`s something wrong with the vehicle`s ignition switch.
The crankshaft position sensor monitors the position and speed of the crankshaft and other parameters that play an important role when starting the engine. If the crankshaft position sensor is having a problem, the vehicle may have intermittent starting issues or not start at all.
The starter solenoid is an electromagnetic switch that engages the starter motor. How can I tell if my starter solenoid is bad? If you`re having trouble cranking the engine over but the battery is charged, or if your starter won`t disengage after starting the engine, it`s likely a starter solenoid issue.
With a cranking system, symptoms are divided into one of three possible troubleshooting categories: Click — No-Crank (solenoid clicks but starter doesn`t crank) No-Click — No-Crank (solenoid doesn`t click/starter doesn`t crank) Slow Crank (starter cranks, but engine RPM slow to start vehicle)
The ignition run-on function is only available in combination with an electronic ignition lock. The ignition run-on function allows you to leave the ignition switched on and take key out of the vehicle with you. This means you can leave and lock the cab when the ignition is switched on, for example.
Common Signs of a Bad Starter

The engine won`t turn over. The most common signal that your starter has a problem is if nothing happens when you turn the key or push to start. Unusual noises, such as clinking, grinding and whirring. If you ignore these sounds, it can eventually lead to damage to the engine flywheel.

Can you jump-start a car with a bad starter? Most of the time, NO, you can`t jumpstart a car with a bad starter unless you repair it. When the battery is dead, jumper wires or boosters are employed. You use a second battery to provide the necessary electricity to start the car.

Engine turned off but inside of car still on, now engine won’t turn back on.
ANSWER : Hi there. The symptoms you’re describing with your boyfriend’s 2002 Grand Cherokee appear to be related to a broken or worn out ignition switch or relay. The ignition switch on the inside of the steering column is attached to multiple electronic connections that send signals to a relay box; which in turn, sends the signal to the individual components. The issue could be related to the ignition switch, the relay, or any of the components in between. If you want to have the fault pinpointed in person, I would have this starting issue inspected by a trained professional to ensure that the correct repair is made.

What if the VSA turns on during startup and doesn’t turn off and what I do is I turn off the engine and start again. This time aro
ANSWER : Hi there. If the VSA light is coming on and shutting off but does not come back on until the next start, then this is a normal condition as the light is telling the drive that the VSA system is deactivated. There is a switch under the dash to turn on and off the VSA system. Try the switch to see if the light continues to come on or off. If the same issue is occurring, then the wheel speed sensors or the VSA switch has failed. If you need further assistance with your warning VSA light coming on, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

steering wheel turned to the far right and locked in place while the wheel are straight. and I can’t turn the key.
ANSWER : Hi there. From the description you have provided, concerning your vehicle’s steering wheel is locked far right and key won’t turn with the front wheels in a forward default position, is somewhat confusing to me. It could be, undo pressure is being applied to the steering wheel lock. You could try, physically moving the left front tire side to side in either direction, to relieve the pressure on the steering wheel lock. It could be, the key you are using has a problem, try another key if available. It could be, the ignition lock cylinder is at fault. I recommend having your vehicle’s can’t turn the key be diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic.

Headlights wouldn’t turn off / now they won’t turn on
ANSWER : The most likely components to cause this may be the headlight relay, headlight switch, or the ignition switch itself. The relay is an electro-mechanical switch. The headlight switch sends a power signal to it. It then switches on internally to send power to the headlights. If the relay is sticking either in the on or off position, this can cause the lights to stay on or not turn on. If the headlight switch has failed, it may not be signaling the relay properly. With the ignition switch, if the mechanical tumbler portion is worn, it may not be fully moving it’s internals to signal the electrical portion of the switch to turn the lights on or off. Or vice versa, the electrical portion of the switch may have shorted internally.

Since one or more components may be at fault, it may be best to have a certified technician properly diagnose why the headlights are not working to find the exact cause.
