Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The vehicle will need to be scanned using the dealer scanner to access the car communication module to see if it is communicating on the car network and to see if the radio is initialized. This can only be done with approved scanners. There are many possible problems with programming or network wire problems on this vehicle, and only a scan can isolate the problem. If you want to have this looked at, a technician from YourMechanic will be able to come to your home or office to diagnose your car’s electrical system to pinpoint the problem and recommend a repair.

Blown Fuse

The most likely reason for your radio`s sudden death is a blown fuse. All car radios have at least one fuse that protects it from power surges coming from somewhere else in the vehicle. The first thing you should do when your radio stops working is check its fuses and replace any that have blown.

Check For Fuses – You`ll need to check one or more fuses on most vehicle radios, and you could also have auto amplifier circuits and other related components in the mix. One will be found in the car`s main or auxiliary fuse block, and it will be clearly labelled.
You can reset your car`s radio without the code by turning on the car but not the engine and switching the radio off. Then, hold the radio power button down for a couple of minutes until the reset is achieved. A reset on your car insurance may be in order as well if you feel you are overpaying for your coverage.
A car radio can stop working for many reasons: from a lack of power, a blown fuse, faulty wiring, screens, tuners, speakers or displays, or you may just be locked out of your stereo`s security feature.
The most common reason for a car radio to stop working after the battery has gone completely dead is that the radio has an anti-theft “feature” that kicks in whenever battery power is removed. When that happens, all you have to do is enter the right car radio code, and you`re back in business.
RF fuse holders are designed to protect costly RF components and systems. These models are available with several different fusing levels (1/16A up to 1.0A). The fuses are field replaceable. The fuses are rated for 4 hours @ 100% current rating and 1 second maximum @ 200% current rating.
An electronic device called a radio transmitter applies oscillating electric current to the antenna, and the antenna radiates the power as radio waves. Radio waves are received by another antenna attached to a radio receiver.
Use a receptacle voltage tester by plugging the device into the outlet. The lights on the device will come on to indicate the presence of a live electrical current. Test an electrical outlet with a non-contact voltage tester by holding the tester about an inch away from the short slot on the outlet.

My radio has power but is not turning on
ANSWER : Hello there. A few different faults can cause the radio to cut off like this when it is powered up. The most common would be a voltage spike from when it was plugged in. Other potential issues include a shorted wire or a faulty radio. A qualified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, will be able to inspect the electrical system and perform any repairs required.

Car radio will not pick up radio stations.
ANSWER : There are multiple issues that could cause a radio to not pick up an AM / FM signal. In most cases it’s due to faulty wiring, a loose ground wire or the wiring running to and from the antenna. However, it’s also possible that an internal component inside the radio such as an electrical relay has been damaged. It might be best to purchase a new tuner; as diagnosing and fixing this issue would most likely be more expensive than the cost of buying and installing a new one.

I am replacing my power brakes booster and need some advice about removing the power unit from the bell crank.
ANSWER : Hi there. When removing the brake booster from a vehicle, you will need to remove the master cylinder and cap off the hydraulic lines. Then go in the cab and remove the pin from the bell crank and unbolt the 4 bolts that hold the booster on. Then remove the booster. Do the opposite to install the booster. If the bell crank pin had a cotter pin to secure it, make sure that you use a new cotter pin. If you need further assistance with removing and installing a brake booster in your vehicle, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

No power windows, overhead lights, or power to dash cluster
ANSWER : Hi there. This can happen for a few different reasons. The most common being that the computer will shut down these circuits due to the low voltage. It is a protection system that keeps the battery from being drained by unneeded components. It can also occur if the battery was jumped backwards as this can blow fuses or damage the modules in the vehicle. If the vehicle was jumped correctly then I usually remove the battery and fully charge it. After it is charged I reinstall it and everything should then come back online. If not then the module will need to be scanned for codes and to see if it is coming online as it should. If it is not then it may have been damaged. Replaced alternator, now aftermarket radio will not turn on.
ANSWER : It sounds like you may some faulty wiring (to speakers or head unit), a bad fuse or a short somewhere in the circuit related to the stereo. Particularly, if the alternator was replaced as a result of the system being overcharged, this may have caused a fuse to pop. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your radio not working.

I have no power at all to my factory radio. I’ve disconnected battery n waited got nothing all my fuses are good an still nothing
ANSWER : Hi there. It sounds like you may have blown radio fuse. After some research, I found that the radio fuse is most likely in the right side instrument panel fuse block. Locate and inspect the fuse with a digital volt/ohm meter. If you do not find supply voltage on both sides, then the fuse is likely blown; probably due to an unseen/noticed short during a repair. Replace the fuse and recheck for supply voltage on both sides of the fuse and at the radio connector. If the connector does not have voltage, then there is either an open circuit/broken wire or it may be installed incorrectly. If voltage is available, reseat the connector in the radio to make sure the connector is all the way in and providing a good connection; slightly tug at the wires to check for loose terminals and correct as necessary. I strongly suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid any additional concerns from occurring or replacing unnecessary parts. Your Mechanic has several available technicians that can assist you with a radio does not work inspection.

Loss of power using turbo
ANSWER : It sounds like the vehicle is going into limp mode. This occurs when the powertrain control module (PCM) (also known as the electrical control unit) has determined there is an overboost condition. The computer disables the turbo to prevent damage from occurring. There are many potential causes for an overboost condition, with a failed turbo being just one of them.

Some other possibilities include vacuum leaks, a faulty vane adjustment solenoid, faulty turbo actuator or a bad MAF sensor. There is a technical service bulletin (TSB) # 21-07-65, which advises to check for vacuum leaks before replacing the turbo.

If you would like a second opinion from the dealer, I suggest you give the team at YourMechanic a call to inspect your loss of power condition.
