Need help with block heater cord on my van

Where can I run out the block heater cord on my van?
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. From the factory, the block heater comes out of the front of the vehicle. Depending on if you are using the factory system or if you are using an aftermarket unit you may need to mount it someplace else depending on where it attaches to the engine.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

One of the easiest heaters to use is a technician`s trouble lamp. Simply placing one under the hood with at least a 60 watt incandescent bulb can prove as effective as a factory block heater. Downsides include keeping clear of any plastic or rubber bits that can melt, and, well, finding an incandescent bulb anymore.
The most common reasons a Dodge Caravan heater isn`t working are a broken heater blower motor, a problem with the thermostat, or a failed heater blower motor resistor.
If you plug it in when it`s warmer out, it probably won`t cause any problems “other than premature wear on the engine heater,” Feist says. On some newer cars, the block heaters might not come on when it`s warmer than minus 15 degrees Celsius outside, even if you keep them plugged in all the time.
One thing that most can agree on is that the maximum amount of time you should leave the engine block heater plugged in for is four hours. Any more and you`re just wasting electricity. You should also plan for plugging your vehicle in for at least two hours to ensure it will start.
The block heater uses 110V or 230V voltage. And, the power of the heater varies from 500W-3000W.
The system does not have a thermostat. It achieves maximum temperature after approximately three hours of operation. Using the heater longer than three hours does not improve system performance and unnecessarily uses electricity.
Plugging in your block heater will help protect them, reduce stress on the battery and make it easier for the engine to turn over. “During summer, dead batteries are typically due to leaving something turned on – say, your lights – or the battery coming to the end of its lifespan.
It becomes harder to pass through your engine. If not enough oil is running through the engine, the engine has to work harder. This can wear out your engine parts.
You can find three buttons on the left in the Dodge Caravan conditioning controls. Press and hold the topmost and the bottom buttons. While the top AC button regulates the rear wiper, the bottom one regulates the washer fluid of the rear wiper. Now check the AC light; it should illuminate and flash.
A general rule of thumb is to plug it in for at least 2-3 hours, and if it`s especially cold outside, possibly even longer. A lot of people will say that simply starting the vehicle and letting it idle is a good enough way to warm up the oil and the engine.
You can leave your block heater on all night. It won`t do any harm or cause any damage to your engine. It will turn on and off throughout the night to keep your engine warm.
It`s only necessary on days when temperatures fall below 5 degrees Fahrenheit. A remote starter or very brief idling time will effectively warm the engine in more moderate temperatures. An engine heater can reduce the risk of engine damage and extend the life of your vehicle.
Electric engine warming blankets can be easily fitted atop your engine or on the inside of your car hood to keep your engine warm overnight, according to Lifewire.com.

Black soot and bad smell coming from the heater vents.
ANSWER : Hi there. Sounds like the cabin air filter to the heating and a/c system is degrading and peeling apart. The stuff that is coming out into the cabin area is a filter full of dirt and debris. I recommend replacing the cabin air filter and the black sooty stuff will stop coming out. Old filters will make a bad odor in the cabin area, especially when the filter gets heated up.

Overheating issue, when heater is on its normal temp. but if heater is off it begins to overheats, until heater is turn on again.
ANSWER : It sounds like your engine might have a restriction in the cooling system. If the cooling system has a restriction that prevents its flow, this will cause the engine to get hot. The heat is dissipated from the cooling system by means of the radiator.

When a restriction exists sometimes the radiator alone is not enough. The heater core is like a small radiator inside the dash and is also another means of dissipating the heat from the cooling system. So essentially when the heat is on you are introducing a second radiator into the system which will help to cool the engine down.

In order to get this fixed, consider YourMechanic, as one of our mobile technicians can come to your home or office to diagnose the overheating issue firsthand and help you make the necessary repairs.

Overheats when heater is on, heater blows cold air.
ANSWER : Since you had cooling system work done recently, one possibility is the cooling system is air bound. If air is trapped within the cooling system and not properly bled from the system after a repair, the air can cause the coolant to not circulate properly. This can lead to overheating and no hot air from the heater. Another cause that can simply be coincidence is a stuck thermostat. The function of the thermostat is to allow the engine to reach a certain temperature before opening and allowing coolant to flow throughout the cooling system. If the thermostat is stuck closed and fails to open, the coolant will not flow properly and cause the engine to overheat. The heater will blow cold air because hot coolant is not flowing to the heater core behind the dashboard to provide heat for the interior. Have a certified technician diagnose the engine overheating as soon as possible. Continued driving while overheating can damage the engine.

Engine swap details needed. I need to know if the swap will fit.
ANSWER : Hi there. When it comes to swapping engines for your vehicle, what you can do is check all of the engine mounts and transmission mounts and make sure that they will work. If the mounts are a little off but there is room, then you may have to retro fit a custom mount. Check the length of the engine and the transmission assembly together. Make sure that the assembly is the same length. It may be okay if it’s a few inches shorter or longer, however, it cannot exceed 3 inches or the assembly will not fit. There has to be room for the engine to move around. Also, keep in mind, the CV shafts may not match up to the transmission and wheel hubs, especially if the transmission is shorter or longer. If you need further assistance with swapping your engine with another engine, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Where is the block heater cord located
ANSWER : The block heater connection if equipped is behind the front Ford emblem. Just flip it toward the passenger side to open the power port.

my car heater gets warm but not hot.the car temp.is fine but i need more heat for the winter.does it sound like i need a new therm
ANSWER : It is possible that the thermostat is stuck open. When this happens, the engine can run much cooler than it is intended to. Running "too cool" can effect fuel mileage, emissions, and heater output. Most modern engines operate around or above the boiling point of water – 200-225 degrees. The thermostat generally opens when the coolant reaches 190-195 degrees. Part of it’s job is to restrict coolant flow so the engine can reach those temperatures. If the thermostat is open constantly, the engine may never reach operating temperatures. Have a certified technician inspect and/or replace the thermostat.

My van transmission started slipping and the van is making a whining sound now. I had transmission fluid filled but it is even wor
ANSWER : It would be a good idea to check to be sure that the fluid level was not overfilled. Too much fluid creates shifting and operational problems just as too little fluid will. So, the level should be carefully verified. If the whirring noise is from the transmission (it could be wheel bearings for example), such noise could be from the torque converter, oil pump, or other rotating elements. The noise would have to be heard first hand by a mechanic to pin it down. If the transmission is not shifting properly, it could be as simple as a valve body issue (typically the valve body is replaceable on the vehicle) but there are also many other causes of shift difficulty such as broken or worn bands, failing clutch pistons and so forth. Some of these faults can be determined by using external gauges to measure internal hydraulic pressures within the transmission when you shift. Transmissions can be repaired; you won’t necessarily need a "new" transmission but yes, admittedly, such repairs can be costly. If you want to get a definitive diagnosis and get information about repair options, just request a transmission shift and noise diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will help you with that.
