My car will not shift out of drive and into park

Will not shift out of drive into park. Change neutral safety switch. Checked all fuses. Will Not sift up to neutral, reverse or drive. Is currently in drive, will shift to drive 3 2 and 1. Wont shift to anything else. Last night I was playing around with the ignition and while turning the ignition, I was able to finally shift it up to neutral and reverse. So today, I changed out the neutral safety switch and now it's back to being in drive and not shift up to neutral, reverse or park. Try the trick I did last night and it won't work again to get it to go back to neutral. Tried
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi. This sounds like the ignition switch has a problem and is not allowing the car to go into park. If the ignition switch is not sending the signal to the neutral safety switch that the key is in the run position, it will not allow the shifter to move. It is also possible that the shift linkage is damaged and is causing the problem you have as well.

I suggest you have a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to determine why the car is not shifting properly and suggest the necessary repairs

A car that will not go into park can be both inconvenient and dangerous. In most cases a problem getting a vehicle into park can be traced back to an issue with the shifter cable, ignition or the shifter mechanism. This is usually a fairly easy repair but if it is not addressed it can lead to a more expensive repair.
This new V6 from Hyundai is an aluminum, 2.5-liter DOHC motor that makes 170 horsepower and 166 foot-pounds of torque that peaks at 4,000 rpm, which means power off the line may be lacking for some.
You most likely have a faulty brake light switch. While it seems like your transmission and brake lights aren`t related, they are; there`s a switch attached to the brake pedal which activates your lights when depressed, and the same switch activates a solenoid on your shifter to allow you to shift out of park.
There are a few reasons why you might find yourself unable to shift out of park. Some of the most simple ones are that you may be low on transmission fluid, especially if you`ve sprung a leak. Another popular reason why a car won`t shift from park is from a dead battery, which the above steps can usually help with.

If when you put your vehicle into gear and it won`t move, this may be a problem with low transmission fluid due to a leak, the shifter, shifter cable, or it could even be a problem in the valve body of your automatic transmission.
You experience delayed gear shifting and a sense of pulling or slipping when trying to shift between gears. The vehicle will not downshift as you slow down. An inability for the solenoid valve to operate may prevent your car from downshifting, and the engine will continue to rev as you attempt to brake.

The most common reasons are: Shift lock solenoid – The shift lock solenoid is the mechanism that stops the Hyundai from being able to be shifted out of park when the vehicle is off, it also won`t let you put your vehicle into drive without turning on your ignition and putting your foot on the brake.
If you`ve noticed that it`s taking a bit more effort to shift your automatic transmission out of park, it could signify an issue with the shift interlock feature. The shift interlock feature requires you to step on the brake pedal to prevent unintentionally shifting out of Park.
Why are Hyundais so cheap? They`re made in bulk, offer older technology, are made with less expensive parts, and are in low demand. Despite these qualities, they are some of the best quality vehicles you will find for this price.

My car will not shift out of drive and into park – 1999 Hyundai Sonata
ANSWER : Hi.

Car begins to roll when the shift lever is in park had only starts in the neutral position, just rebuilt the transmission
ANSWER : The neutral start safety switch could be misaligned or a fault in the linkage and./or cable could be contributing to the problem because "Park" is not actually reached when you move the shifter. The whole mechanism from the manual lever on the transmission up to shifter will have to be inspected. The manual lever should be inspected separately inasmuch as you indicate abnormal resistance in certain gear selections. In addition, it sounds like the shift interlock may not be functioning. The recommended service to obtain a diagnosis of all of these issues is a shift linkage/interlock inspection. If you request that service, the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Truck stalls when shifting into drive from park or reverse
ANSWER : Hi there. The vehicle running great, once past the initial stall, leads me away from a fuel delivery concern. The stalling issue may be, the minimum airflow rate is not properly set. This could be the result of a dirty or worn throttle body. Cleaning and/or making an adjustment to the throttle body may correct the problem. Engine running at idle, plug the IAC passage, and the RPM (revolutions per minute) should be at or near 400 rpm. A vacuum leak present could also cause the engine idle to be improperly controlled and needs to be identified before any adjustments are made. I recommend having your vehicle’s stalling issue be diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic.

on the dash board my truck was in park but when i pulled the gear shift down in drive the car still was in park
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The issue you are describing is known as a delayed engagement. While causes can vary, it is typically a sign that you need a transmission fluid change. It can also indicate that shift solenoids are failing. Only further inspection will tell. Start with a fluid and filter change, and use that opportunity to inspect the fluid, its pan, and the bottom of the transmission. If the issue is not resolved, contact a transmission specialist to do a full inspection. With that being said, every time you start you car, you need to let the transmission fluid pressurize. You should give the vehicle 30 seconds before shifting it into drive or reverse after first starting. This will decrease stress to the transmission and its related components. My car will only shift into reverse and neutral, can’t get it into the drive gear
ANSWER : This may be a result of low transmission fluid or potentially a faulty transmission control module. A faulty transmission control module may cause a delay in acceleration or erratic shifting of gears. The transmission control module has various sensors such as vehicle speed sensors, wheel speed sensors, throttle position sensors, turbine speed sensor, and transmission fluid temperature sensors that all direct information to it in order for it to perform it’s function. Other functions controlled by the TCM are components such as a kick down switch, traction control system, and cruise control module. Any of these may also affect the way the transmission control module performs and controls the transmission and the shifting of your vehicle. I would suggest having a professional from Your Mechanic come to your location to properly diagnose your transmission problem.

Metallic click sound when putting car in drive or reverse from park, and another click (sometimes) when making a turn.
ANSWER : You may have damaged the axle or strut. I would have the entire front inspected and have the clicking diagnosed. When anyone hits something hard enough to pop a tire there is most likely damage to some component in the area where it was hit. A visual inspection may or may not identify the problem, but a good mechanic can road test and hear the sound and should be able to pinpoint the cause of the clicking noise and recommend a repair.

Getting it into Park after driving & Getting it out of park to drive the car.
ANSWER : You should have the shift cable disconnected from the transmission to make sure the hard shift problem is in the shift cable or shifter assembly and not in the transmission. The most common cause is going to be in the shifter mechanism due to problems in the shifter. Have the shifter cable disconnected at both ends and check to make sure it moves free or it binds and shifter moves free. You may need to replace the shifter or shift cable and would need to be isolated to what one is cause.

When car is shifted into drive car will not go forward when pressing gas it just rev the engine. But when shifted into reverse car
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The color and condition of the transmission fluid should be a huge indicator. Low transmission fluid is one of the leading causes of issues with the transmission. You will want to start by refilling the transmission fluid, following manufacturer directions and specifications on the type and the amount of fluid. If this makes a difference, then you know the lack of good hydraulic fluid in the system was the immediate cause of your problems. This does not always mean that the transmission is not having other issues, as burnt fluid is not a good sign in a vehicle that is only 6 years old. Burnt fluid can also be a sign of how hard the vehicle is being driven. If filling the transmission with fresh fluid does not solve the issue, then the transmission needs to be inspected by a transmission specialist. Unless properly trained, automatic transmissions are incredibly difficult to work on at home.
