My 2003 Ford Mondeo won’t move when I put it in gear
Hi I have a Ford Mondeo 2003 manual. I was drive when all of a sudden my car wouldn't move. I can select gears but it won't move. Can you please help me out
My car has a manual transmission.
How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :
If when you put your vehicle into gear and it won`t move, this may be a problem with low transmission fluid due to a leak, the shifter, shifter cable, or it could even be a problem in the valve body of your automatic transmission.
Typically, manual transmissions that won`t engage in reverse have an issue with a damaged gear or the shift lockout ring. why won`t my car move when I put it in drive or reverse? Being unable to engage any drive gear could be due to leaking fluid, broken parts, or a problem with a shift cable.
Most likely, you just need to replace the clutch, but listen to hear if the transmission is responding when you select a gear. Another thing you can do is raise the drive wheels, and see if they spin when you put it into gear. If they do, your clutch is worn out.
Press the Clutch Pedal Down More
If you have a manual transmission, try to press the clutch pedal all the way down to the floor before trying to change gears. As the friction disc down, you have to press the pedal further and further down to move it away from the flywheel.
A failing transmission position sensor may no longer send the right signals to the Powertrain Control Module, or PCM. Without signals from the position sensor, the PCM will no longer know when to shift the transmission`s gears out of park into a moving gear. Transmission shifts into the wrong gear.
Transmission Range Sensor (TR)/ Transmission Position Sensor
The PCM uses this information to control which gears of the transmission to enable or disable. When the TR sensor fails it can cause wrong gear starts, no upshifts, or what feels like a falling-out-of-gear condition.
But a blown fuse No. 38 becomes a likely candidate causing a loss of power to the transmission solenoids.
There are a number of reasons why a car will not move from park to drive. They can range from the shifter being locked, to a broken shifter cable. Here are a few of the most common conditions that will keep your car stuck in park. Locked shifter: A shifter will sometimes get locked in park.
Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Transmission Position Sensor (Switch) Common signs include the car not starting or moving, transmission going into a different gear than selected, and the vehicle going into limp mode.
A vehicle that refuses to shift or into gear smoothly indicates there is a problem with your transmission. In most cases, the culprit is your transmission or clutch. A vehicle`s transmission system is very complicated. It has several moving parts, ignoring such an issue could quickly spiral into expensive repairs.

I was driving had my car on gear and lost acceleration. I pushed the clutch in and put on gear but only grind but won’t move?
If the clutch lever, on the transmission, is functioning something has mechanically failed in the clutch and/or the transmission. If the clutch failed, and you heard gears grinding, as you tried to shift the transmission, some damage may have been done to the transmission. Even if just the clutch has failed, the engine and transmission will have to be separated to find the cause of the failure and worn out or broken parts will likely have to be replaced . To request an inspection, the recommended service is clutch system diagnostic. If you request that diagnostic, the responding certified mechanic will evaluate what you have and let you know of your repair options and costs. If the clutch mechanism is releasing properly, and the shift linkage is not malfunctioning, your transmission will have to be removed from the vehicle and inspected. Once a transmission has been removed from a vehicle, if the problem is a broken or worn part or parts, and the transmission has 100,000 miles or more, the most cost effective approach is to just simply rebuild the whole transmission. There are transmission rebuild kits that are sold just for this purpose. Rebuilding a transmission is no big deal and is indeed easier in many respects than rebuilding an engine. You can rebuild your transmission right in your own garage. You can NOT rebuild an engine in your own garage due to the highly specialized, and extremely costly, machine shop equipment required. Occasionally, mobile mechanics will take on a transmission rebuild job especially as once the mechanic removes the transmission from the vehicle, it is just simply a modular unit that can be easily transported to a mechanic’s shop and rebuilt right there and then returned to your vehicle. My 1999 Buick Regal will go into reverse and move, but when I put it into drive it just revs up and won’t move.
Hi there. Check the transmission fluid and see if its low or dark. If the fluid is full and red in color, then the transmission is slipping. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you with your transmission.
My car is a saturn vue 05. It starts will shift all gears. But it’s not moving when I put into gear. Even in natural it won’t move
Hi there. Let’s begin with the "N" position for the gear selector. That is neutral, or no direction meaning that the car does not move on its own power in that gear; only if you and possibly help from friends push the car. Do you actually feel the vehicle shift into a gear when the selector is placed in "D" or "R"? If not, this could an internal failure of the transmission; a clutch, band, etc.. no need to get into the technicalities of internal parts here. I would suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts. Your Mechanic has several available technicians that can assist you with a car does not move inspection.
What does it mean when I put my car in gear and it won’t move and makes loud clicking noise 2006 Chevrolet Malibu
Hello – check the fluid level and quality (should be more pink than black, and not smelled burned). Check also the shifter cable – the inability to re-engage Park (which is a mechanical action) suggests the shifter is no longer connected to the transmission, or there is mechanical damage inside the transmission. The lack of forward or reverse motion may also be related to a broken shifter, or a failure of the transmission pressure pump. I recommend a transmission inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, and give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.
Vehicle won’t go into gear when running, when turned off, vehicle will go into gear but won’t start. 1998 Ford Explorer
Hello – your clutch hydraulics are the problem here. Check the clutch hydraulics fluid level – and it may share the same reservoir as the brake master cylinder (both use brake fluid as the hydraulic medium). If fluid needs to be added, that means that probably the clutch slave cylinder is leaking – this might be visible as a clear, but bitter-smelling liquid on the ground under the engine. I recommend a clutch hydraulics inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, and give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.
Car won’t go into gear. 2002 Audi A4 Quattro
Hi there – Your symptoms describe the behavior to expect when your clutch hydraulics go out (clutch master and clutch slave cylinders). Check your clutch fluid level – it may be low. If the fluid level is low, this usually means your clutch slave cylinder has worn out, not unusual with your mileage, and should be replaced. I recommend a malfunctioning clutch inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.
When i try to put my vehicle into gear the shifter moves freely and will not go into any gear is a 2003 Cavalier what could that b
If you are unable to actually change gears, the possibility of damage to the linkage between the shift lever and the gearbox has to be ruled out first. The linkage might appear to move but it might not be moving to the required extent. If the linkage checks out though, and you are unable to shift, that means there is a mechanical fault within the gearbox. Such can only be resolved through transmission removal, disassembly and repair. You should first rule out a linkage problem, of course, and if you want to do that, the service to request is a shift diagnostic. If you request that service, the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you and once the diagnostic is complete let you know what your options are in terms of getting this repaired at the least cost.
