My 2000 Chevrolet Silverado will not shift into 3d & 4th gear or reverse only into 2nd gear

As i was trying to check my trucks velocity i shifted into N but after i quickly shifted into D when i did that i heard something pop. I tried putting it into reverse and it wouldnt shift , i also tried shifting into the 3rd&4th gear and it wouldnt work . I drove home with the 2nd gear only because it was the only one that would work . Do you know what may be going on ? Do you think its the transmission or its just the shift silenoids that need to be replaced ?
My car has an automatic transmission.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. Most of the time when this occurs with this noise it is because the sun shell in the transmission broke. This is very common. The transmission would need to be rebuilt to fix it. I would recommend taking it to a transmission specialist for this.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

A gasket near the transmission filter where it mounts to the valve body could be leaking causing the hydraulics within the transmission not to engage second gear properly. On the other hand, a shift solenoid may also be at fault. If a shift solenoid goes bad you can experience very similar symptoms.
This is often times a sign of low transmission fluid or a faulty transmission control solenoid.
As with any vehicle, a Chevy truck that won`t go in reverse means it`s a transmission issue. Start with the basics like checking the transmission fluid. From there, you`ll likely want to get help from a mechanic, as most types of transmission repair are beyond simple wrenching.
The 1-2 shift failure on the 4L60E is often due to a faulty throttle position sensor (TPS). Test the sensor (there should be a smooth, linear electrical response over the range of motion) or substitute a known good unit.
One main reason why the automatic transmission in your car may not be shifting smoothly is the ECM is going bad. It is best to get this checked out by an experienced auto mechanic technician who understands the electrical system. Other indicators include bad connections within, or worn out sensors and faulty solenoids.
Transmission won`t engage or stay in gear

If when you put your vehicle into gear and it won`t move, this may be a problem with low transmission fluid due to a leak, the shifter, shifter cable, or it could even be a problem in the valve body of your automatic transmission.

Over time, dirt, debris and other tiny particles can accumulate in the transmission fluid, affecting its fluid properties. This can cause the vehicle to die when you shift into drive or reverse, allow a loss of power, transmission slip, rough shifts or even prevent the vehicle from shifting into gear at all.
This could likely be due to a faulty computer that controls the transmission, a faulty transmission solenoid, or another issue with your transmission. If there is an issue with your solenoid you could be experiencing slipping gears or a transmission that won`t shift into gear properly at all.
A transmission may stay in first gear due to low transmission fluid, a faulty shift solenoid, a worn clutch (for manual transmissions), a malfunctioning transmission control module, or broken transmission bands. These issues can prevent proper gear shifting and result in the vehicle being stuck in first gear.
Turn off your vehicle`s ignition and wait patiently for 5 to 10 seconds. Start the engine and allow it to idle for several seconds. Switch off the ignition and wait patiently for another 30 to 40 seconds. Repeat these steps 2 to 3 times in order to reset your vehicle`s transmission control module.
If your vehicle will not shift out of first gear, the problem is not the fuses. The problem could be a shift solenoid, but more than likely, you have an internal transmission issue that will require rebuilding or replacing the unit. The 1-2 shift valve may be the problem.

My 2000 Chevrolet Silverado will not shift into 3d & 4th gear or reverse only into 2nd gear
ANSWER : Hello. Most of the time when this occurs with this noise it is because the sun shell in the transmission broke. This is very common. The transmission would need to be rebuilt to fix it. I would recommend taking it to a transmission specialist for this.

Won’t shift past 2nd gear . It drives normal to 2nd gear but wont shift into 3r – 2000 Ford F150 4×4
ANSWER : Hello – I don’t think this is related to switching back to 2WD per se. There is a shift position sensor on the side of the transmission, and it’s possible that the snow activity caused moisture and/or dirt to get into the sensor. I would recommend a transmission inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

My 98’Saturn won’t shift out of 2nd gear. Could it be a shift solenoid for 3rd & 4th?
ANSWER : Hi there. Are there any lights on; check engine, transmission, etc.? A code retrieval may be helpful if there are any codes stored. Codes/data could lead a qualified technician in the right direction of diagnosis as this could be a shift solenoid, a shift valve, valve body, or even a turbine speed sensor circuit fault. When transmission problems like this arise always check the basics first; fluid level and condition, engine and transmission mounts, battery condition, ground points, and warning lights. A faulty battery may look ok, but a failed cell or low state of health is all it takes to vary the supply of voltage to the solenoids and sensors and create a host of problems. I suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts. Your Mechanic has several technicians available that can assist you with a car does not shift past second gear inspection.

When shifting into 1st gear and attempting to take off, car shakes and then stalls. Car also won’t let me shift into reverse.
ANSWER : Hi there. Either the shifter rail is damaged inside the transmission keeping the gears from going into reverse and the first gear from connecting all the way, or the transmission first and reverse gears are damaged causing the transmission to have a hesitation on the forward 1st gear and no reverse. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose your transmission shifting issue.

My car won’t shift into 3rd, 4th, and reverse.
ANSWER : Hi there. The gears 3rd and 4th are both on the main shaft inside the transmission. Those gears have a synchronizer that connects the gears together. The reverse gear does not have a synchronizer to make the gear work. It sounds like that the reverse gear has chipped a tooth and caused the main shaft gears to grind out the synchronizer. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to observe the issue with your transmission.

The car doesn’t shift into first gear while it works fine in reverse
ANSWER : The problem could be that the internal transmission pump is weak, or the transmission clutch seals are leaking. It sounds like the transmission will need an overhaul.

I recommend having a transmission mechanic test the pressures and diagnose the problems to verify whether you need an overhaul with a new torque convertor.

neon manual 5 speed drives great but will not shift into 4th gear while driving. All other gears work fine 4th works when off
ANSWER : Hi there. Most of the time when a manual transmission is hard to shift into an individual gear, it’s caused by the linkage being ’twisted’ or not aligned correctly. However, it is also possible that internal damage has occurred inside your transmission that is causing this problem. In most cases, a clutch issue would cause shifting issues on all gears. Before you spend money on repairs, it’s probably a better idea to have a professional mechanic complete a car is hard to shift inspection, so they can isolate the source of this problem and provide you with the correct repair advice.

I got sound when I shift to 3rd gear and it’s get hard to put shift to second gear when car is in 3rd gear.
ANSWER : Hello. It sounds as though the synchronizers in the transmission, which are used to adjust transmission internal gear speed when upshifting or downshifting are possibly worn out or you are shifting a bit too fast. It is also possible that the clutch is not releasing fully when you press the clutch pedal. In some conditions, utilizing synthetic gear oil in the transmission can help the quality of gear shifting. If the clutch is not fully releasing an inspection of the clutch hydraulics is a good idea. I would recommend having an inspection of the hard shift completed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost for repairs.
