My 1995 3.8 L mustang has been losing power. The car takes extremely long just to get up to 10 mph and I can’t rev passed 2500-3000.

I can't rev the engine passed 2500-3000 rpm depending on what gear I'm in without the engine rattling heavily and/or misfiring, i can no longer get up any type of hill or slope, even the smallest one. The engine also begins to sound like an airplane after a while if that makes any sense. The cars power is very week, but just last week it was strong as ever, from my own diagnoses I figure it could be the mass airflow or the fuel injector but I wanted to really narrow it down before I start buying parts

ANSWER : The biggest challenge with your symptoms is they are intermittent. Intermittent symptoms are often difficult to duplicate and we can’t diagnose something that is working. The biggest challenge here is recreating the symptoms. While attempting to recreate the symptoms, I would have a scanner connected and recording all the data. If the problem arises, it will be recorded and I would most likely be able to see what happened in the scan data.

As for what the problem could be, it could be many things. The fuel pump could be binding and not delivering enough fuel, the TPS (throttle position sensor) may be glitching or a crank or camshaft sensor maybe sending false information. Camshaft and crankshaft sensors are common failures on Civics. So these two sensors would be suspect, as well as the wiring harnesses that feed them. If you have excess draw while the vehicle is running, you will want to check the ratings on your battery and alternator and make sure not only are they rated for your vehicle, but are up to spec. You also will want to make sure all of your battery terminals, cables, and ground connection are all clean, dry, and tight. You can also do a basic parasitic draw test on the battery to see if there is something pulling any power. You will need a multi-meter or an ohmmeter to do that sort of testing. This is first done to the battery to see what amperage is being drawn (in milliamps), and then move to the fuse box to find out what system its coming from.
