My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
There is a lot of poor quality batteries on the market now that have only 12 or 24 month warranties on them. These batteries may last a year or two if you are lucky. If you continue having problems with batteries going dead you should have the charging system tested to make sure it is not over or under charging battery. If a mechanic like one from YourMechanic comes and replaces battery then the charging system can be tested to make sure it is working properly.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

This can be the result of a faulty fuse, switch, or relay, and it will require a fair bit of investigation to pinpoint where the drain is coming from. Another common issue is, of course, just a bad battery. Batteries typically need to be replaced every three to five years.
What`s happening when the battery/check charging system light comes on? Whenever this light goes on, it means that the vehicle is running solely on battery power. If the problem continues and your charging system fails, the battery won`t be able to recharge and it will soon run down, leaving you with a dead battery.
A car, truck, or SUV should run with voltage between 13.5-14.5 volts. The voltage regulator is designed to keep the voltage in this range.
Defective charging system – A car battery drains quickly if something called the alternator on your charging system fails to push out enough voltage, ideally between 13.5 – 14.5 volts. In this case, the battery will continue to drain even while the car is running.
A defective alternator can kill a battery if bad diodes or an internal voltage regulator prevents it from charging the battery. Or a diode can leak, allowing current to flow after the vehicle engine is shut off. A worn or loose drive belt, or a weak belt tensioner, will also interfere with charging.
1. Dead Battery. One of the most common problems that indicates a charging system problem is a dead battery.
It should read close to 12.6 volts when the 2000 Toyota Camry is off.
This system consists of a 270 Amp alternator and internal regulator.
With the battery warning light off, standard charging current as measured at the alternator B+ wire should be 10 amps or less, and charging voltage should range between 13.2 to 14.8 volts.
Why Your Car Battery Keeps Dying. While car batteries slowly die over time, high heat, brutal cold, excessive use of vehicle accessories (after-market equipment), and other mechanical issues can shorten the life of even the toughest battery.
The most common symptoms of bad 2022 Toyota Camry batteries are if your vehicle is slow to start after turning the key, or if your battery cables and connectors show signs of heavy corrosion. You may again notice a boisterous clicking sound when turning the key or if your electronics work but the vehicle won`t start.

Faulty Charging

If your charging system isn`t working properly, your car battery can drain even while you`re driving. Many cars power their lights, radio, and other systems from the alternator, which can make the battery drain worse if there`s a charging problem.

New battery won’t hold a charge. 2000 Ford Ranger
ANSWER : Hi there – this behavior sounds more like there is a parasitic load, or drain, on the battery after shutting it off. This problem can be diagnosed by connecting an ammeter to the positive (red) battery cable, observe the current drain (likely less than 1 amp), then, one at a time, remove each fuse, check to see if the current drain has dropped to near 0, then reinsert the fuse. This process should identify the faulty circuit in most cases. The specific components on that circuit can then be checked for current drain problems. A professional mechanic, like YourMechanic, can come to your location, and perform this procedure for you, and replace/repair the failing component.

Battery light stays on and overnight battery drain. 2006 Land Rover LR3
ANSWER : Hi there – yes, something is going on here that’s draining your battery. Perhaps the pressure of the engine wash dislodged wiring which has shorted, or there was a chemical reaction to the cleaning solution that caused electrical damage in the alternator or voltage regulator. These componnents can be checked off of the vehicle. 2011 Nissan will not crank and the battery goes dead after one year.
ANSWER : Hi there. The battery is the remote key fob will only last about 8 years. Since it is now 2017, the battery is now 8 years old and could have lost its charge. The chip in the key tells the computer (ECM) to start the car. If the vehicle continues to eat away the battery in the key fob, then either a button is stuck on the key fob or there is a parasitic load (something that is on that is to be off) in the car causing the key fob to drain the power as the engine is running. If you need further assistance with your car not starting, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

When changing the car battery, do you "register" the battery to the car computer?
ANSWER : Hi there. Changing the battery has nothing to do with programming a battery. If the car was flat dead with a battery that lost all of the power because the dome light was on, then when jumped the vehicle will run fine. What may need programmed when the battery is replaced is the key fob. The key fob will lose programming to the computer as the vehicle computer is reset. However, if a 9 volt battery saver was put into a cigarette lighter and the car battery was removed, then the computer will not lose its memory and be just fine. If you need further assistance with your battery, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

I have Chrysler 300c. Battery light came on, changed battery and alternator but power still getting drained and battery light still comes on.
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. This may be a sign of a failing starter relay. The starter relay is a small unit near the starter that directs power to the starter from the battery. When this fails, it may cause a clicking sound and will not allow the starter to engage the flywheel when you turn the key. I would suggest having a professional from YourMechanic come to your home to diagnose your starting issue to determine the solution to get you back on the road.

Battery not charging.
ANSWER : You have a direct short from the water entering into the circuit. In order to find it you will need to pull each major large fuse until you locate the major circuit that is shorting the battery power. Once you locate major fuse circuit then you can narrow it down to the cause.
