Interior lights will not shut off
The interior lights in the vehicle have not turned on for several weeks. Now, they will not shut off. After starting the car, I had to drive home with the interior lights on and they will not turn off upon shutting off and exiting the vehicle.
My car has 171000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
There are two possibilities that can cause the problem you describe. One of the door ajar switches first may not work when you open the door, making contact and signaling the body control module to turn on the interior lights. This would result in the switch being stuck on signaling the body module to keep the light on. The switch is most likely the driver’s door switch or latch sticking.
The other possible problem is the body control module itself. A simple test of the module and looking at the door switches will tell you if a door switch or the module is the problem. If you need to have this done, consider YourMechanic, as a certified technician can come to your home or office to diagnose your interior lights issue and perform the right repairs.

Lasting Light. If the car interior light simply won`t turn off, then check the switch. It may have gotten bumped accidentally by a passenger, valet or car wash employee. If the switch is in the “door” or “off” position and your interior light still stays on, then you should consult a mechanic.
Usually a relay or a fuse will be the issue. Check the fuse since it is likely burnt. If not, it could be the switch or the door.
A faulty relay: The relay is an electrical component that controls the power supply to the headlights. If the relay is stuck in the on position, the headlights may remain on even when the ignition is switched off.
When all your dashboard lights turn on at once, it most commonly indicates an issue with the alternator or the charging system. It is common for all the dash lights to come on with no alternator output; low voltage can cause unusual electrical issues. The alternator should be tested at the time of battery replacement.
Even just leaving a door slightly ajar may be enough to cause the internal lights to illuminate – and if you leave your lights on long enough, your car`s battery will be drained. Luckily, this can be easily fixed with a jump-start, and in most cases, your battery will be just fine afterward.

Sometimes, the sensors do not react quickly enough when daylight is detected, either because the windscreen is dirty – hence limiting the amount of light passing through to the sensor – or the sensors are not sensitive enough. Solving the first problem is easy – just wash your windscreen.
A building`s janitorial and maintenance workers often work after hours, said Stephen Resinski, the regional managing director of the real estate firm Colliers International. Motion sensors — either infrared or ultrasonic — will detect the presence of humans and keep the lights on, usually for 30 minutes.

ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The vehicle does utilize a lot of the same sensors for these systems. Are there any other codes that are coming up when this code appears? If so you will want to take these into consideration when processing the repair and making a diagnosis. The module may be bad, and replacing it should fix the problem. The lights should turn off once the main computer recognizes the new module and the sensors sync up. If you believe the sensors need to be cleaned you may do so. Do as minimal as possible to make sure you are not damaging the sensor or disrupting the wiring inside. A bad connection would make the lights stay on. With so many lights that are effected by the module being illuminated, the module is likely bad or does not have a connection. Check the connection first and then resort to replacing the unit. No dash lights, back right tail light is out, no parking lights. Brake lights work though as does head lights.
ANSWER : Hi there. In many cases, when you have electrical problems like you’re describing, it’s caused by multiple electrical component failure. It’s likely that a few electrical relays are not working; especially if you have systems that utilize the same components (such as your brake light and tail lights). I would recommend having a professional mobile mechanic come to your location to complete an electrical problems inspection first, so they can pinpoint what is damaged and recommend the right repairs.
How do I override the interior light delay module so when I shut the door the lights will turn off?
ANSWER : Hi there. The interior lamp control module is located under the center of the instrument panel on the dash of your vehicle. Look for any ground wires to the interior light circuits to see if they are loose. If all the wiring looks in good condition, I recommend replacing the interior lamp control module. The module is tied into the interior lighting, the door switches, and the ignition switch. You car hard wire the dome light to the fuse box with a key on only slot to bypass the module if you insist on not replacing the module. If you need further assistance with the dome light staying on after locking the doors, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
Electrical problems after upgrades
ANSWER : Hi there. From the description you have provided, all of your vehicle’s electrical problems began with the "upgrades". Unfortunately this could be a can of worms to repair. Assuming, you had a qualified technician install the vehicle’s radio and lighting upgrades and all was fine after the installations. This would lead me to believe your vehicle has several problems. The first place to look would be fuse(s) for the inoperative components. Next, to look for shorts to power the components staying on. If you can find the problem yourself, I recommend having your vehicle’s electrical problems diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic.
2012 equinox reduced power light engine light and traction light came on. Lost a lot of power got home and all light except engine
ANSWER : Your car has what is called a "safe mode" that will be engaged by the computer when it detects that something critical has gone wrong related to any of the major components in your engine chassis or power train. This may be related to a number of things, most of which should have been registered in the computer when the check engine light came on. I recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to inspect your check engine light and diagnose any codes registered by your vehicle’s computer.
Intermittently, dashboard and interior lights do not work
ANSWER : Hello there, thank you for asking about your 1988 Oldsmobile Toronado. This is something that would require first hand inspection for complete diagnosis. However, there is a technical service bulletin (TSB) that may pertain to your issue. The TSB is number 89-T-129 and it deals with an "Electrical Problem" message on the message display and erratic air conditioning operation. The solution is to replace the HVAC control module with an upgraded one. There is also another TSB 89-T-140 which deals with intermittent climate control and instrument cluster operation due to a faulty solder joint in central power supply. The fix is to replace the unit with an upgraded model. I recommend having the pros at YourMechanic diagnose the electrical issues and repair this problem for you.
signals, daytime running lights are not working, park brake light on dash is on steady and chime is dinging steady 4×4 wont engage
ANSWER : This is likely a brake light switch problem. I would suggest testing the brake light switch which should be located down by the brake pedal. This may also be a computer problem as well as indicated by the other lights on in the dash. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to possibly replace the brake light switch and diagnose with a scanning tool which will download useful data from the truck’s computer indicating what specifically the problem may be.
First, the fuse 19 keeps blowing. When I hit the brake pedal my dash lights up. The third brake light acts like a running light.
ANSWER : Hi there. Check the wiring on the vehicle to the tail and brake lights. There is a cross short that is causing the lights to blow the fuses and make the tail lights brighter than normal. If you need further assistance with your electrical issues, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
