The 2002 Civic model is subject to the Takata air bag recall campaign. Be sure to input the vehicle’s VIN number into the NHTSA database to see if the vehicle has been recalled. If the vehicle is subject to recall, and not just the Takata recall but any recall, and the required repairs have not been made, it is risky to buy the car. With regard to the issue that you are writing in about, there is a problem with the transmission. The exact fault at issue though could range from the incredibly mundane (and cheap to fix), such as a disconnected or broken transmission shift linkage or even just lack of adequate transmission fluid, to much more complex and costly problems, such as a faulty transmission oil pump, failed valve body, and so forth. To find out the cause, simply request a failure to shift diagnostic. Please note that even in the worst case scenario, that is if the vehicle needs a new transmission, if you can get the vehicle at a low enough cost, it can be worth it to fix it. However, if the vehicle is equipped with a recalled Takata airbag, do not accept it even as a gift unless you intend to have the airbag replaced (yes, those airbags are that dangerous). A good way to protect yourself in a used car transaction is to request a pre-purchase vehicle inspection. That inspection of the specific vehicle you want to purchase, carried out by a certified Mechanic, dispatched to your location, will give you very specific data regarding any current problems that the car has. Please do not hesitate for a moment to re-contact YourMechanic if we can assist you further in your attempts to make a wise used vehicle purchase.

Honda is recalling certain model year 2001-2003 Civic, model year 2002-2003 CR-V, and model year 2002 Odyssey vehicles to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag.
Honda has issued a “Do Not Drive” warning today for certain 2001-2003 Acura and Honda vehicles equipped with unrepaired Takata Alpha driver side air bag inflators. If you own one of these vehicles and still have an open Takata air bag recall, do not drive it until this urgent, lifesaving recall has been completed.
Some vehicles will require both a driver and passenger airbag inflator replacement, which will take about 3 hours.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 12, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda`s numbers for this recall are Q5A and Y58.
December 2, 2021. American Honda will voluntarily recall 4,346 Honda Accord (2021), CR-V (2021-2022), Insight (2022) and Ridgeline (2021) vehicles in the United States to replace the rear center seat belt assembly, for free.
Honda`s new airbag was developed by engineers at Honda`s Ohio R&D center in conjunction with pioneering safety-system manufacturer Autoliv, part of Honda`s Safety for Everyone initiative.
When activated, the inflated airbags help absorb the driver`s and front passenger`s forward momentum. From the moment the sensors detect a sufficient frontal impact, the airbags can fully deploy faster than the blink of an eye. Immediately after inflation, vents in the airbags allow them to rapidly deflate.
Many automakers such as Mercedes-Benz placed airbag replacement labels on all vehicles sold in the U.S. through 2002. Those labels called for airbags to be replaced after 15 years. But after much research, automakers have concluded that airbags produced after 1992 will last the lifetime of the vehicle.
All airbag control modules can be reset and reprogrammed, except modules that were damaged by a flood, fire, or some other kind of damage that impacted the hardware. Airbag control modules store hard and soft codes caused by accidents.
So far, about 50 million airbags have been recalled, and more recalls are expected in 2019. According to a New York Times review of Takata`s internal documents, each airbag costs about $100 to replace.
A total of 67 million airbags have been recalled, and at the end of 2022, 11 million were still yet to be replaced. At the heart of the problem is the airbag`s inflator, a metal cartridge loaded with propellant wafers, which in some cases has ignited with explosive force.
The seat belt recall is Honda`s largest yet in 2023, overshadowing an earlier instance in February which affected 114,686 cars. Ford has earned two consecutive years as the most-recalled brand in the U.S., although it currently lags behind other automakers.
If your Honda Accord dates back to 1997-2002, it has a timing belt. If you have a 4-cylinder model from 2003-2007, you engine has a timing chain; if you have the V6 model from those years, it`s a timing belt.
Vehicles included in the recall are 2020-2022 Odyssey, 2020-2022 Passport, 2020-2021 Pilot and 2020-2021 Ridgeline.
The Honda recall includes the following models: 2001-12 Accords; 2001-11 Civics (all models); 2002-11 CR-V; 2011-15 CR-Z; 2003-11 Element; 2010-2014 FCX Clarity; 2007-14 Fit; 2010-14 Insight; 2002-04 Odyssey; 2003-13 Pilot; 2006-14 Ridgeline; 2010-11 Crosstour.

Fuel pump engages. Batery good, alternator good volts, jump start helps when wont start. Temp does not matter. Intermittent?
ANSWER : Hello. Thank you for writing in. There are several reasons your vehicle may only start when jump starting. The first and most common is a build up of resistance that is causing you to need a boost of voltage to get the engine started. This may be due to poor battery cables, a bad ground connection, a poor starter solenoid, and a couple of other issues. The first thing you want to do is perform a visual inspection of the starting system. Make sure there is no corrosion build up in the battery cables. You can also check the resistance across these wires and make sure you have a solid connection between components. You then want to make sure the starter solenoid is doing its job. It is responsible for taking the small amount of electricity sent by the ignition and turning it into a huge electrical charge that is strong enough to push over the engine with the help of some gear ratios in its favor. Do some more testing, and stick to the basics before assuming its something seriously complicated.

My car will not start Intermittently. I purchased a new battery 2 weeks ago and yesterday the car wouldn’t start. Got a jump and
ANSWER : The issue you are having is probably due to an intermittent fault in the starter motor itself or a deficiency in the starter electrical circuit, for example a large voltage drop due to a poor ground or a high resistance connection. These issues can be readily diagnosed and resolved on a mobile basis if you request a hard starting diagnostic. If you request that diagnostic, the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you promptly. Based on Toyota’s Factory Service Manual, the battery should not be disconnected if the vehicle engine is running. The battery acts as a large resistive voltage sink and consequently taking the battery out of the circuit, while the alternator is still running, can create a voltage spike on the car’s electrical system which is not good for voltage sensitive components such as the engine computer. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

battery very good but wont start.
ANSWER : When you are having the no crank condition, the system will need to have the starter tested to see if it is getting power from the ignition system to operate it. I have seen the starter not work and also have seen it show up like a weak battery and crank the engine really slow.

This can also be from bad cables and connections at the battery and should be checked. The starter will have a big main cable and a smaller cable on it. The big one is from the battery, and the other is from the start relay, and should have power when the key is turned. If you want to have this checked, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to diagnose the no-start and help you with any repairs that are needed.

Map sensor car won’t start up good ?
ANSWER : Your MAP sensor is an important input for your computer. It helps determine the load on the engine to calculate the correct amount of fuel to inject. It sometimes takes a few seconds for the vehicle to realize that the sensor is not producing a good signal.

At that point, it will use other methods to determine the fuel rate, such as pre-programmed fuel maps, throttle position, etc. I would suggest replacing the MAP sensor and retesting. If you would like to have it checked first, a certified technician from YourMechanic will be able to scan your vehicle and test components to determine the root cause of your starting issue before making a repair.

Push start will not start on a 2012 Dodge Journey after hooking up subwoofers and amp car did start after hookup but never started
ANSWER : Hi there. Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer technical assistance when aftermarket components or electrical upgrades are installed, as there are simply too many different things that could be causing your ignition problem. I would recommend contacting a local audio visual installation company or local automotive shop that completes electrical repairs to get some ideas, or purchase a service and repair manual for your Dodge to review the relay schematic to determine which ones you need to check and replace. This video might help you learn how to check for damaged relays – so you might want to watch it.

Car won’t move. I can start the car but when I put the shifter in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ect. The car will not move.
ANSWER : The transaxle is not engaging internally to the axle shafts inside the transaxle or you have one or both axle shafts disengaged from the transaxle. The fact that the speedometer moves when gear is engaged and clutch is released shows the speed sensor in the transaxle is getting turned.

You will need to have the vehicle raised and the axles inspected for broke or stripped shafts. If the axles do not have anything visually wrong with them then hold one wheel and try to turn the other wheel while transaxle is in gear, with engine off, to see if the wheels are locked together. When you spin one wheel the other wheel should turn in the opposite direction. If it does not then the problem is in the transaxle differential gears and the transaxle would need to be removed and disassembled to find the broken internal components.

If you need some assistance with this, consider YourMechanic, as one of our mobile technicians can come to your home or office to diagnose your acceleration issue and help make the necessary repairs to get you going again.

changed the negative terminal on the car. Tried to start car but now it wont turn over .
ANSWER : You may have to disconnect the batteries negative terminal. Turn on the ignition key and leave it on and connect the battery. Try and start the car and it should start. Before shutting the car off, hold the button in and turn off the car. This will disable most systems. If this does not work, then try holding in the button and at the same time turn on the key and then let go of the button. If this does not work as well, then get in touch with a mechanic to come and remove the immobilizer from the car and put the wiring back to its original state. A certified technician from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect your no-start issue and let you know what needs to be done.
