My car has an automatic transmission.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. It would appear that your vehicle is equipped with a serpentine belt. That is one belt that drives all of the engine accessories. If your vehicle is equipped with an engine that has a separate AC belt, then yes, the vehicle can still be driven as long as that belt does not drive the alternator or water pump. I would recommend having the serpentine belt replaced by a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, as preventative maintenance, especially if you believe that it is going to fail soon.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

In most cases, this type of clicking sound is caused by a belt that is slightly frayed and hitting a shield or other mechanical component. It`s also common for a worn out pulley or idler tension pulley to cause a clicking sound as the belt spins.
Battery issues are some of the most common loose alternator belt symptoms since a slipping belt means curtailed or no power to the battery. When this happens, the battery will use its reserved electrical charge to power up all the components in the vehicle.
The serpentine belt (also known as a fan belt, alternator belt, or drive belt) is a critical car component. Hearing a sharp squeaking noise or a loud grinding noise are tell-tale signs of wear. It`s your car telling you something`s not right, and it may be your car`s broken or old belt.
A squealing or noisy belt is one of the most common symptoms of a slipping or worn serpentine belt. Squealing can be more pronounced when you`re climbing a hill and running your heater or air conditioning at the same time. Squealing can also occur after you drive over deep puddles or have an undercarriage car wash.
If you ever hear growling or whining noises coming from under the hood, you could have alternator problems, which should be checked out by a professional ASAP. This growling or whining sound happens when the belt that turns the alternator`s pulley becomes misaligned or rubs against the side of the pulley.
That`s why it`s recommended that the serpentine belt is replaced early when the squealing symptoms are first noticed. Although it may be safe to drive with the squealing for a few days or weeks, the belt will eventually need to be replaced, and for safety, the earlier it`s repaired, the better.
A failing coil will generally not make a ticking sound, however a failing or intermittent coil may cause the motor to run sluggish a bit if the misfire continues to happen.
You should apply belt dressing to your serpentine belt every month or every 3,000 miles to prolong its life and to prevent it from slipping. Sometimes, depending on the cause of the squeak. Belt dressing is intended as a tool to help you maintain your belts.
Whilst the car is running you should spray a dry silicone like DS-100 onto the inner section (grooved side) of the fan belt. Coat the entire length of the fan belt. Applying DS-100 will assist in rejuvenating the rubber and immediately improve grip.

You may not believe this but the knocking sound you hear coming from your car`s engine could actually be the accessory belt. JTR Repair advises that when this belt gets too loose, it can make knocking noises as it makes contact with the engine. Tightening the belt will alleviate the knocking sound.
If the belt becomes stretched out, the tensioner isn`t working properly, or one of the pulleys becomes bent out of shape, you can hear rattling, clicking and slapping noises that might be mistaken for engine knock.

hey i had a belt break while traveling on my 2004 honda pilot. It is the small belt and not the serpentine belt. The mechanic t
ANSWER : Hello. The smaller belt is known as your timing belt, and it works inside the engine to keep mechanical components aligned with each other during the compression cycle. The serpentine belt, which is the big belt, drives the alternator, water pump, AC compressor, and a couple of other components. If the small belt broke it is likely the timing belt. This will cause the car to stall, lights to illuminate, and can even cause serious damage to the engine. Typically replacing a timing belt is a lot more complicated and expensive than replacing a serpentine belt. You may want to receive a second opinion on the car before you go ahead with repairs.

can a alternator belt make car not start because I was driving my car and I ran out of gas and i put a little gas in? belt broke
ANSWER : Hi there. It is very difficult to diagnose this type of hard to start issue remotely due to the fact that both issues; running the vehicle out of gas and the alternator belt being broken can cause the car to not start. It’s kind of like a chicken / egg type deal. In order for the fuel pump to deliver fuel, it needs power. It receives this power from the battery initially, but then the alternator. If the alternator belt is broken, you won’t have power supplied to components. It is best to have a professional mobile mechanic complete a car is hard to start inspection to determine what is causing the starting problems on your Dodge Neon.

95 Bluebird. Fixed the drive belt and want to know, can I use a drive belt from another Nissan car until the new one gets here?
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for your question. I’d be happy to help. As long as the belt is the same width and close to the same length you can use it.

Alternator belt got torn whilst driving and had new belt fixed but the car won’t move on drive or reverse after few seconds drive
ANSWER : This is a sign of a faulty transmission control solenoid. Modern automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car’s computer activates a transmission solenoid, which directs transmission fluid into the valve body to engage the correct gear. When this is faulty or not working properly, this can cause a delay in gear shifting or in some cases cause the car to not shift at all. If you’d like, a certified technician from YourMechanic can come to your home or office to inspect your vehicle, and provide a definitive diagnosis for the shifting issue.

What’s wrong with my manual Jeep if I’m driving at 5th gear but it sounds like I’m driving at 3rd or 4th?
ANSWER : Since the car is still new, the vehicle should be taken back to the dealer to be checked under warranty. You may need a repair or replacement of the engine assembly. The engine may have an imbalance causing the problem. There is a technical bulletin that may pertain to this vehicle and call for engine replacement. The TSB is 09-008-16 and is dated June 16, 2016.

My car shakes when braking and shakes while I’m driving a little bit, do you know the problem and how much it would cost, it’s for
ANSWER : Hello. Most of the time when you get these issues it is due to warped brake rotors. When they warp you will get this shaking and this noise. If there are any loose components in the steering then that can amplify the issue. I usually get the vehicle in the air and inspect the front end for any worn out parts and then I check the brakes. I measure the rotors to see if they can be machined, but most of the time if they are warped enough to cause shaking they will need to be replaced. The cost will need to be determined once the issue is found. If you are wanting to have this shaking checked, consider YourMechanic, as a certified mechanic can come to you to [diagnose why the vehicle is shaking while braking] https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-shaking-or-vibrating-inspection

Can you change the defected water pump without changing its defected belt (which is the drive belt and only belt in this model of
ANSWER : Hello. Yes you can replace the water pump without replacing the serpentine belt. If the belt is worn, and it breaks while you are driving, you can damage a lot of other components in that area. Typically the price of a serpentine belt is relatively inexpensive. You will have to remove the belt to replace the water pump anyway. Since you are likely going to have to purchase a new pump, we do recommend that you purchase a belt at the same time. You SHOULD replace the belt if it is worn, and this is a perfect time to do it. It is not necessarily required, but you are putting yourself at risk of another break down at a later time. Not to mention if the belt is already worn, manipulating off and back onto the vehicle while changing the water pump can further damage it, and shorten the amount of time its got left. Belts should be replaced before they break, as to the amount of damage they can cause when they do break. Again, you may be able to get away with not replacing the belt right now, but if its as worn as you say, its going to break sooner than later and should be replaced.
