I own a 2014 Chevrolet Captiva about 8 to 10 times a day the key will not come out of the ignition I have had the shifter linkage
The key will not come out of the ignition 75% of the time. I took it to the dealership and had them adjust the shifter thinking maybe that would help it helped for about a week or so and then it started doing it again
My car has 75000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
The entire shift mechanism should be looked at. The shifter mechanism may be worn or bent if "adjustment" helped temporarily. Also the ignition switch may not be signaling the shifter inter-lock mechanism. Also, if the inter-lock mechanism is loose, out of adjustment, or damaged, the shifter may not get the signal that the brake pedal is depressed. Any of these components being worn, out of adjustment, etc, can make the ignition switch think that the vehicle is not in Park and allow the key to be removed.
Either another trip to the dealership is in order, or a certified technician from yourmechanic.com can come to you and inspect the difficulty removing the ignition key.

The most common reasons a Chevrolet Captiva Sport key won`t turn are a binding steering column/lock, an ignition switch issue, or a problem with the ignition key.
2014 Chevrolet Captiva packs power, purpose and safety
The Captiva combines confident and dynamic styling with an available active-on-demand all-wheel drive system that distributes power as needed.
A rearview camera system, which helps drivers detect objects directly behind the vehicle, and ultrasonic rear parking assist are standard on LTZ and available on LS and LT models. Six months of OnStar Directions and Connections service is standard on Captiva Sport.
If the car cranks when you turn the key, but the engine won`t start, it could be because fuel isn`t getting to the engine. One potential reason for this could be dirty fuel injectors. Over time, the fuel injector nozzles can become clogged with rust, corrosion or debris.
Take care of your Chevrolet Captiva Sport and it`ll take care of you. With the right maintenance at the right time, your Captiva Sport has a good chance of hitting 200,000 miles or more.
The Chevrolet Captiva Sport Reliability Rating is 3.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 19th out of 26 for compact SUVs. The average annual repair cost is $585 which means it has average ownership costs.
The Holden Captiva is a crossover SUV that was produced from 2006 to 2018 by GM Korea (previously known as Daewoo).

The ignition relay is one of the most important electronic relays found on modern vehicles. It is usually located in the fuse and relay panel beneath the hood, and is responsible for providing power to the vehicle`s ignition system, and some of the fuel system`s components.
Car key sensor is not working: If the key is not working at all, it may be due to the drained battery, faulty fob, low car battery, or faulty keyless entry system (if applicable). You can try replacing the fob batteries, diagnosing the fob or towing the vehicle to a service centre to fix the issue.
If one key, like your A key, isn`t working, then it`s probably a bad switch or a stuck keycap. The best way to fix it when one key isn`t working is to focus on that key. Pop off the keycap and look for debris. If you see anything, clean it out with canned air.

Put key in ignition. Lights and everything come on for a second, then went off as I turned the key. Now no power, key stuck
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. This sounds like your battery cable connections are corroded or loose at the battery. Try to see if the battery connections are loose by wiggling them and see if power returns. If power returns, then have the cables removed, cleaned, and reconnected to test the battery. Hope this helps and best of luck!
Every time I put my key into the ignition lights flicker, radio comes on, and check engine light comes on.
ANSWER : Hi there. There is an issue with the ignition switch when you are turning the key. The tumbler may have worn contacts within the switch causing the lights to flicker and the radio to come on when it is turned off. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose an electrical short or loose ground in the ignition switch circuit.
Replacing an ignition lock cylinder with no keys?

How to replace an ignition cylinder? do I also have to replace ignition switch? cause key has a chip that’s specific my dodge.
ANSWER : In some cases i have seen the outer ignition housing okay and just the key lock cylinder damaged. In others they damage the housing and ignition lock cylinder. In either case you cannot use your key; it will be a problem since the chip is programmed to your vehicle and will require programming. You may have to replace the entire housing on the column and have the new ignition key reprogrammed to start the car.
Before you purchase any parts, have it inspected to see the damaged parts so you get what is needed. You will need a qualified mechanic to install parts and program the key with a factory scanner. This may mean the dealer will have to do the programming of the new key or a specialized locksmith.
key unlocks doors and trunk but ignition is locked key will not turn ignition, i think maybe key is worn out?
ANSWER : There are several possibilities. The key could be worn (try a spare key), the lock cylinder could be worn or broken, in which case no matter what key you try it might not work and/or there could be an issue with the shift interlock. The ignition "switch" is an electro-mechanical device so if you simply request an electric component inspection – ignition switch the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
If I replace the ignition switch, can I use my existing BMW Keys with remote and valet key?
ANSWER : Yes, you can. The ignition switch is separate from the EWS system, so replacing the switch will still allow you to use the current keys you already have. Only if you have to replace a faulty key or EWS module will you have to possibly order all new keys.
One other possibility is there is an EWS issue where the key is not being properly identified not allowing the starting sequence. This would mean ordering an EWS module or keys from the dealer. Try out all keys you have to see if any will commence in the starting sequence. If none of the keys will start the vehicle, faults should be checked to ensure there are no EWS key identification faults. If no faults are present, then most likely the ignition switch is faulty. If there are key identification faults, then it’s either a key, module, or receiver that is the issue. You may want to consult with a mechanic who has the equipment to read out the Powertrain and EWS fault memories before replacing parts.
