I have to manually shift into 2nd gear on my automatic Ford Ecape

I have a 2008 Ford Escape that doesn't shift into 2nd automatically like the other gears, i have to manually shift it by letting off the gas petal. What could be the issue

My car has 102000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi There,
This is something that may be caused by a couple of things. When the transmission is low on fluid, this can cause problems with shifting due to a lack of the hydraulic pressure necessary to cause the transmission to shift. Automatic transmissions use transmission fluid to (among other things) create hydraulic pressure which causes electronic solenoids inside the transmission to shift from one gear to the next. If one of these solenoids is not working properly, you may notice the car shifting erratically or in some cases not at all. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to take a look at your vehicle.

The 2008 Escape is prone to a wide variety of transmission issues, with users on forums such as carcomplaints.com and Reddit reporting a bevy of problems ranging from complete failure to lurching into gear and hunting for gears on the road.
One reason why an automatic transmission isn`t shifting into gear has to do with the fluid. If it`s not at the right level or the incorrect type has been used, then it`ll affect the gears. Another big reason has to do with the ECM possibly going bad.
Transmission Fluid Low or Poor Condition – Vehicles low on transmission fluid or that are operating with worn out or contaminated fluid are likely to experience hard shift conditions. Lack of adequate lubrication within the transmission can cause several problems, including hard shifting.
Turn off your vehicle`s ignition and wait patiently for 5 to 10 seconds. Start the engine and allow it to idle for several seconds. Switch off the ignition and wait patiently for another 30 to 40 seconds. Repeat these steps 2 to 3 times in order to reset your vehicle`s transmission control module.
Problems with the 2008 Escape are extremely serious and include transmission failures, worn out power steering systems, and dead engines. Transmission failures are the most common complaint showing up at around 90,000 miles. If the transmission fails the only solution is replacing the entire assembly for around $3,500.
Transmission code: CD4E.
Typically this is caused by either a sticking internal valve in the transmission, or it may be the vacuum module for the transmission. Most of the time this is caused by an internal transmission issue. If the engine is running fine and is producing the correct sensor signals then the transmission is the problem.
This is often times a sign of low transmission fluid or a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears.
The Vehicle Speed Sensor measures vehicle speed. When it fails the transmission can stop shifting or shift late and harsh. A bad VSS may also inhibit overdrive and the converter clutch.
Fixing Rough Transmissions

All you have to do is add a bottle of Transmission Treatment & Leak Stopper. It`s specially designed to smooth rough shifting. As you might guess from the “leak stopper” part, Tranny Honey stops transmission leaks, so low fluid levels should no longer be a problem.

Over time, the computer may no longer be calibrated to handle the engine`s exact needs; a transmission reflash, or reprogram, can fix this problem.
One of the most common issues is gear slippage. This occurs because the TCM is not giving the correct commands to shift, which can cause sudden shifting or not shifting at all. Another common symptom is failure to accelerate as usual. If your vehicle cannot change gears correctly, your car`s acceleration will suffer.
Stability control automatically senses when the vehicles handling limits have been exceeded and reduces engine power and/or applies select brakes to help prevent the driver from losing control of the vehicle.
While the Ford Escape is an excellent commuter vehicle, several model years have encountered a variety of major faults. Way.com strongly recommends avoiding these Ford Escape model years – 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2014.
An engine that is hesitating to accelerate is most likely dealing with a fuel/air mixture that is too lean. Engine`s that are running inefficiently will begin to show signs like hesitation which will only become worse over time.
What the P0708 code means. The P0708 trouble code means that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a malfunction with the transmission range sensor.
The transmission position sensor is usually screwed onto the side of your car`s transmission. As you move the automatic gear selector from park/neutral to drive or reverse, it detects the changes. It then enables and disables the connection to the starter motor circuit, affecting your car`s ability to start.
Ford`s PowerShift dual clutch transmission was used in 2010. Vehicles impacted are the Ford Fiesta (model years 2011-2016) and the Ford Focus (model years 2012-2016) equipped with a PowerShift transmission.
A couple of possibilities could be a vacuum leak. If the engine is sucking in too much air, it could raise the engine speed, possibly drastically if a ;large vacuum leak suddenly occurred, such as the brake vacuum booster line breaking or coming loose. Another possibility could be in the throttle control.
There are several causes for your car to lose power significantly while accelerating. The most typical causes of a car not accelerating while driving include a faulty sensor, contaminated fuel or air filters, or a faulty timing belt.
Improper Or Harsh Shifting

When there`s no speed signal coming from the sensors, shifting of gears will be a problem because the powertrain control module won`t control them correctly. This will make the transmission not work properly. It will either shift more quickly or roughly than expected.

A part of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), the Transmission Control Unit covers everything related to the transmission of a vehicle. It ensures smooth gear shifts and optimal fuel economy and performance.
If the clutch is dragging, the synchro friction surface is trying to speed up and slow down the engine`s mass, which is impossible. The synchro will burn up, fail and the transmission has just been ruined.
A non-synchronous transmission, also called a crash gearbox, is a form of manual transmission based on gears that do not use synchronizing mechanisms. They require the driver to manually synchronize the transmission`s input speed (engine RPM) and output speed (driveshaft speed).

Won’t shift past 2nd gear . It drives normal to 2nd gear but wont shift into 3r – 2000 Ford F150 4×4
ANSWER : Hello – I don’t think this is related to switching back to 2WD per se. There is a shift position sensor on the side of the transmission, and it’s possible that the snow activity caused moisture and/or dirt to get into the sensor. I would recommend a transmission inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

My manual car won’t go into gear, it turns on and the clutch goes down perfectly fine. It happened after my gears grinded, the car
ANSWER : If the clutch mechanism is releasing properly, and the shift linkage is not malfunctioning, your transmission will have to be removed from the vehicle and inspected. Once a transmission has been removed from a vehicle, if the problem is a broken or worn part or parts, and the transmission has 100,000 miles or more, the most cost effective approach is to just simply rebuild the whole transmission. There are transmission rebuild kits that are sold just for this purpose. Rebuilding a transmission is no big deal and is indeed easier in many respects than rebuilding an engine. You can rebuild your transmission right in your own garage. You can NOT rebuild an engine in your own garage due to the highly specialized, and extremely costly, machine shop equipment required. Occasionally, mobile mechanics will take on a transmission rebuild job especially as once the mechanic removes the transmission from the vehicle, it is just simply a modular unit that can be easily transported to a mechanic’s shop and rebuilt right there and then returned to your vehicle. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

My 2000 Chevrolet Silverado will not shift into 3d & 4th gear or reverse only into 2nd gear
ANSWER : Hello. Most of the time when this occurs with this noise it is because the sun shell in the transmission broke. This is very common. The transmission would need to be rebuilt to fix it. I would recommend taking it to a transmission specialist for this.

VW Bora V5 2001 automatic dosnt shift gear from 3rd (manually shifted) until i hit the rpm over 6000 plus
ANSWER : This is common when the vehicle is low on transmission fluid or has a faulty transmission control solenoid. Automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car’s computer activates a transmission solenoid, which directs transmission fluid into the valve body to engage the correct gear. When this is faulty or not working properly, this can cause a delay in gear shifting or in some cases cause the car to not shift at all. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to take the car for a test drive to more specifically determine the cause for this.

I got sound when I shift to 3rd gear and it’s get hard to put shift to second gear when car is in 3rd gear.
ANSWER : Hello. It sounds as though the synchronizers in the transmission, which are used to adjust transmission internal gear speed when upshifting or downshifting are possibly worn out or you are shifting a bit too fast. It is also possible that the clutch is not releasing fully when you press the clutch pedal. In some conditions, utilizing synthetic gear oil in the transmission can help the quality of gear shifting. If the clutch is not fully releasing an inspection of the clutch hydraulics is a good idea. I would recommend having an inspection of the hard shift completed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost for repairs.

My gear shift doesn’t shift to any other gear its stuck on neutral. I open the gear assembly and I can pull a lever which allows me to move it.
ANSWER : Hi there. The shifter interlock solenoid is not working and needs replaced. The shifter interlock solenoid makes the shifter lock in place so it does not move if you accidentally move it into another gear. If you need further assistance with your shifter not working, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

I have a 1991 Ford F250 has all the gears if you shift manually but will not shift down by itself
ANSWER : Hi there. You’re right, guessing can be very expensive. However, if I had to make an educated guess about your shift concern, it sounds like either a shift solenoid/solenoids is malfunctioning or there is feedback in the wire harness to the shift solenoid. I would take a look at the electrical wiring diagram and begin diagnosis from there. If the overdrive function is on and the transmission will shift from 1st to OD, then there is definitely some feedback somewhere. How do you know what gear the transmission is in after 1st? Do you have a scan tool connected that can provide that information? If this is more of a "it feels like it shifts from 1st to overdrive" then I suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to determine what is actually happening and diagnose the concern. Your Mechanic has several available technicians that can assist you with a transmission is not shifting correctly inspection.
