Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Since you didn’t actually go down the road with your Parking Brake on, I doubt there was a lot of damage caused, but an inspection of the system must be done to make sure. The problem with your steering is likely unrelated as well. The mechanical parking brakes in the rear are separate from the hydraulic brake so you should have an experienced technician look at the assembly to see if the parking brake may have become stuck or if the linkage is binding in the rear. For the steering concern, check your power steering fluid level to make sure it’s full and it not you may have a leak. Consider hiring an experienced technician like one from YourMechanic who can come out and take a closer look at the brakes and steering concerns to offer a more personal diagnosis.

Engaging the emergency brake first is easier on the transmission. When you`re ready to leave, start your engine, press your primary brake, release the emergency brake and shift into drive. Remember that driving with your emergency brake on can damage your car.
When you drive with the parking brake even partially on for several miles, it`s possible to warp a drum or disc. Or if the brakes get really overheated, you can even cause the lining`s adhesive to fail, and have the linings crack or even separate from the pads or the brake shoes.
The Basics: What you need to do to stay safe
First of all, your brakes don`t work without brake fluid. It`s a hydraulic system.
Typically you can expect to get about 50,000 miles out of your emergency parking brake shoe with normal usage. Sometimes it may not be as much, or you may get more time out of them.
In an emergency, the parking brake can be activated when the vehicle is moving by pressing and holding in the button. The brakes will then be applied with force in order to brake the vehicle. The braking process is canceled when the button is released or if the accelerator pedal is depressed.
Types of Parking Brakes
Newer vehicles may come with the button on the dashboard that allows drivers to simply press to activate the parking brake and press to deactivate it. Older vehicles might have the shift lever beneath the dashboard or the e-brake foot pedal.
Generally speaking, AEB systems include a radar sensor, positioned on the front grille, bumper or air vents of the car. This is used to actively measure the distance to the vehicle in front and detect objects that the car might crash into if it doesn`t adjust its speed.
So, what makes an emergency brake different? It`s all in the name. Some automakers call it a parking brake, while some call it an emergency brake. While calling the auxiliary brake system a parking brake implies you use it every time you park your car, the name emergency brake implies it`s only for emergencies.
Why is the brake light on while driving? When your brake light comes on, your car is letting you know that either your vehicle is low on brake fluid, the emergency brake is activated, there`s trouble within the ABS unit, or there`s a problem with the sensors.
If you somehow manage to drive a long distance with the parking brake engaged, then you can cause major damage to your brakes. Most of the damage comes from heat generated by the constant friction of the pads or shoes rubbing against the rotors or drums.

The emergency brake can stop a vehicle if your regular brakes aren`t working. The reason slowing down is recommended first is that using your emergency brake at high speeds can cause you to lose control. As you engage the emergency brake, keep the release button pressed down so that you can manage the pressure.

I replaced the brake light switch. Gear lever unlocked because it had locked. Now the brakes feel hard.
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. You need to check the brake switch install adjustment. You may have the switch adjusted too tight and it is holding the the brake pedal partly down. This will cause the brake master cylinder to not release the brakes when you let off the pedal. Readjust the switch away from the pedal until you feel some free play again in the pedal. This should fix the problem. If you would like help, consider having an expert automotive technician from YourMechanic come to your home or office to inspect and diagnose this issue for you, and make or suggest any repairs as needed.
Low brake pedal and anti-lock brakes are not kicking in.
ANSWER : The brake pedal is working to stop the vehicle, but there may be air in the controller unit causing the ABS brakes to not function. I recommend bleeding the brake system from the farthest location from the master cylinder to the master cylinder including the ABS unit. If the brakes are still spongy after a full bleed, then the controller will need to be replaced. If you need further assistance with your brake pedal being spongy, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
EPC light on 2004 Jetta. Code said brake switch faulty, but brakes lights worked. Replaced brake switch, now no brake lights.
ANSWER : Hi there. The first thing that pops in my mind beyond of what you have listed is perhaps the electrical harness attached to the brake switch. Perhaps the harness itself is damaged or you have an exposed wire, loose ground wire somewhere. You might want to have a professional mobile mechanic come to your location and complete a brake lights not working inspection to help you diagnose this issue.
When I put my foot on the brake my back left brake light goes off, when I take it off the brake the brake light comes on
ANSWER : I would suggest trying to disconnect and reconnect the wiring to the rear lights. I have seen these older Toyota vehicles rear lighting short out on the lights themselves due to the way the light circuit was made on the lamp housing. Look at the housing circuit on the light to see if one is touching another, and that could tell you why it is malfunctioning. There could also be a problem with the brake light switch. If you are not comfortable dealing with wires, I recommend getting in touch with a certified mechanic who can look at your brake light issue for you to see what’s going on.
Supportive bar attached to brake pedal interrupts proper braking process
ANSWER : It’s possible to have someone alter the brake pedal or adapt a brake pedal from a different vehicle. You may call around to some customization shops to see if anyone is interested in taking on the project. But first, I would try reaching out to the selling dealer with your concern – especially since it is a new model. Good luck.
Failed inspection due to e brake not working please help me identify parking brake and emergency brake?
ANSWER : What aspect of it do you need identified? To start, the parking brake and the emergency brake are the same part. Those are the two of the names given to the additional brake or hand brake as it is also known. The parking brake on your vehicle will be a pedal that is located to the far left side next to your normal brake pedal and accelerator pedal. Once you press the brake pedal down, you will need to pull the handle to release it. This brake uses the same brake components as your normal brakes, but gives you a different way to activate them. This is for when the vehicle is unmanned, or in case of emergencies. The parking brake is always connected to the rear brakes on the vehicle.
Brake sensor is to sensitive causing brakes to flicker while driving. 2005 Mercury Montego
ANSWER : Hi there – your brake light switch needs a minor adjustment. It is adjusted too "tight" or close to the brake pedal lever, or possibly has failed. Adjusting/replacing it will eliminate this flickering problem. I recommend a brake light isn’t working inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, and give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.
