How to get rid of gasoline odor?

I spilled gasoline in the trunk area of my van a week ago today. We've tried soaking it up with baking soda, armor all gas neutralizer, cleaning the carpet and airing it out. There is still a very strong odor at the driver seat area. What else can we try?
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi there:

You can read this article to give you some good tips on removing odors from a vehicle. The best process is to remove the carpet, fully clean underneath, shampoo the carpet and repeat a few times as gasoline is very difficult to remove the odor. Baking soda is also a good product to use.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Most gasoline odors will dissipate within a few hours with proper ventilation. However, it can take several days or longer to go away, especially for large spills. Open windows and use fans to help increase ventilation as much as possible until the odor subsides.
car dealership, says that you need to act quickly if you spill gasoline in your car. First, soak up the gas with old towels or clean rags as quickly as possible. Then use a mixture of equal parts baking soda, white vinegar and hot water to neutralize the odor. Rub it in and then wipe it away with a clean rag.
Citric acid is a great alternative to baking soda and vinegar for breaking up those stinky gasoline compounds.
Breathing gasoline vapor can cause headache, nausea, and dizziness. Extremely high levels can cause fainting and even death. Gasoline in the air can also irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. Gasoline splashed in the eyes can cause eye injury.
Since gasoline is a petroleum product, it can leave an oily residue and still smell, even if washed several times. To be 100 percent safe, the clothes should be hung outside to “air out” for at least 24 hours, until the smell is completely gone, BEFORE washing the clothing.
Many adverse health effects of gasoline are due to individual chemicals in gasoline, mainly BTEX, that are present in small amounts. Breathing small amounts of gasoline vapors can lead to nose and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion and breathing difficulties.
If you smell gas, particularly if you find that the source is your furnace, you should immediately leave the home and contact emergency services. Whether the source is a gas leak, a carbon monoxide leak, or an electrical issue the potential for a serious issue is too great to ignore.
Gasoline Activates the Mesolimbic Pathway

Benzene and other hydrocarbons, when inhaled, have a suppressing effect on the nervous system, which results in a temporary, euphoric feeling. It produces a pleasurable sensation that`s not unlike alcohol or a host of other drugs.

Here`s how to get rid of the smell of gasoline from your clothes and hands. To get the gas smell off your hands, try mechanics soap, vinegar, baking soda, baby wipes, or orange peel water. And if your clothes smell like gas, try special laundry detergent, coffee grounds, baking soda, or lemon juice/vinegar.
Vinegar will start breaking down the gasoline immediately without ruining the fibers of your clothing. The water should be as hot as you can make it. Let the clothing soak in the vinegar and hot water for at least half an hour. If you have spilled a lot of gasoline on your clothes, you should let them soak for an hour.
How do I neutralize odors caused by gasoline? Put baking soda, sand or sawdust on the gas to absorb and neutralize the odor.
Breathing in petrol fumes (not vehicle exhaust) may cause dizziness, drowsiness headaches. Breathing in large amounts can result in coma, loss of muscle control, heart and lung problems. Petrol can cause the skin to become irritated, dry and cracked; if the skin is exposed for a long time then burns may develop.
“When gas evaporates, it gives off compounds, including aldehydes, which are found naturally in peaches and cherries, and benzene, an aromatic hydrocarbon that boosts the octane rating.” Your olfactory system may be sensitive to those sweet smells. As long as you don`t huff the fumes, you`re fine.
Also, since conventional gasoline absorbs very little water, there is often a layer of water present at the bottom of a filling station tank normally used to store conventional gasoline (water is more dense than gasoline, and will therefore sink to the bottom).
Even though modern cars have advanced EVAP systems to prevent too much evaporation from occurring, gas does still evaporate from the tank, especially when the car is parked in the sun. This is even worse when it`s extremely hot outside.
Gas Evaporation Decreases in Frigid Temperatures

In order to burn, your engine vaporizes gasoline, i.e. it heats it up and ignites it. Because winter weather reduces the gasoline`s ability to evaporate, it can make starting your automobile on a cold morning a chore.

Gasoline vapors are heavier than air. Vapors will settle to the ground and flow similar to a liquid. This is why gasoline vapors tend to find their way into drains, sewer lines, basements and other low spots. Gasoline must be mixed with air before it can burn.
DO NOT open your windows if you smell natural gas in your home! Natural gas is combustible only when it makes up 5-15% of the air in a given space. By opening a window, you might actually make the area more unsafe. DO NOT turn on/off any lights or appliances if you smell natural gas in your home or building.
If you smell this odor in the home, you could have a natural gas leak. If a faint, similar smell is coming from the bathroom, you could have a different problem. Sewer gas can leak into your home through a broken toilet seal or unused drain pipe.
Originally Answered: Why do some people don`t like the smell of gasoline? Some of us associate the smell of gasoline and those other solvents with the death of millions of teeny tiny but very important brain cells. Some of us have known people who “huffed,” that is, deliberately inhaled solvents to get high.
Petrichor is the smell of rain. The word comes from the Greek words `petra`, meaning stone, and `ichor`, which in Greek mythology refers to the golden fluid that flows in the veins of the immortals.
Water can cause corrosion inside your fuel system and injectors and keep them from monitoring your fuel delivery rate properly. If left long enough, your injectors can eventually fail altogether, meaning your car won`t start at all.
Abstract. Solvents such as kerosene or gasoline may be used by workers to clean their skin following contact with oily materials. This practice is not recommended, as it is well known that the solvent will defat the skin.

How should I get rid of my junk car?
ANSWER : It depends on where the rust is. There is cosmetic rust which is meaningless and then there is rust on critical safety components, such as steel brake and fuel lines, or structural features like the sub-frame, engine cradle, springs, and suspension components. If the rust is enough to create a safety hazard (not an unusual circumstance so do be careful), basically if you sell to a private party, you have to clearly tell the buyer that the car is potentially dangerous simply because you don’t want anything bad to happen and have it on your conscience. But, then even if you tell people, sometimes they’ll still drive it as is, that is act heedlessly. The thing is cars can be re-built, so if you do a private party sale to a person who will make the vehicle usable and safe, that would be a good outcome. Just price it accordingly. Scrap prices for steel are very low now, maybe a couple cents per pound, so you might get $60 from a scrapyard. In comparison, as long as the frame is not damaged, if you sold it to someone who was able and willing to rebuild it, you might get anywhere from $250 to $1,200 depending on just how bad it is. IF the frame is not damaged, you should be able to get a minimum of $250. However, if the frame is damaged (too corroded), the car is worth $60 (unless you want to part it out and sell individual parts on Ebay, which is not a bad option). Keep in mind, if the frame is not damaged, it is usually more economical, and also more interesting, to keep your existing car and simply repair or restore it. Frame damage though is usually the end unless you are really determined and have a friend who is willing to do a lot of welding for you. If we can assist you further, by all means let us know.

My gas cap will not open. I can get a new cap but how do I get the current one off?
ANSWER : Hi there. Unfortunately, there is no black & white step for removing a broken gas cap. If the gas cap is stripped or spinning around, it has to be carefully drilled out. This should be completed by a professional mechanic to avoid mistakes and debris falling into the fuel cell. If you live in one of our service areas, one of our professional mobile mechanics can come to your location and complete the gas cap replacement.

Only get heat when i rev up my car or push the gas. Other tham that i only get cold air coming out.
ANSWER : You may have a clogged heater core that may be prohibiting the outer linings of the heater core to get hot. As you know, the heater core is a series of tubes that the coolant runs through that generates the heat from the warm coolant after circulating through the motor. These tubes can occasionally develop a buildup on the inner walls such that when the heater core is "flushed" this buildup on the inner walls of the lines remains and still allows the coolant to flow through the heater core. It is important to note that when the heater core is "flushed" it is possible to get good flow through the heater core while the inside walls of the heater core remain caked with buildup. As a result, the buildup on the inner walls prevents the temperature from rising to its capability due to the insulating effect of this buildup on the inner walls which will prevent the necessary heat transfer to properly heat the inside of the car. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and replace your heater core.

Can I ride my car with a bad oil pan for at least a month until Ican get the MONEY TO GET IT FIXED
ANSWER : Hello. If the mechanic at your garage is telling you that the oil leak is severe, I would highly recommend replacing that as soon as possible and not to drive your vehicle until it has been fixed. Leaking oil from a cracked or damaged oil pan or rear seal can increase due to heat and excessive driving. It also will cause internal component damage as the engine will rapidly loose oil pressure and lubrication. An oil leak from the pan is one that should be resolved ASAP and without further driving if possible.

my question is that i want to get a nissan sliva s14 which is the 240sx i guess but when i get it i want to convert it into a gtr
ANSWER : Hello. I have seen several s14/240sx’s with the RB26 motor installed in them. I do not believe that it is a direct swap however. There is most likely some fabrication involved. If you search around on the internet i’m sure there are "kits" available that may include motor mounts and other parts that will help in the swap. The bodies of the two cars are quite different so i do not believe it is possible to swap bumpers between the cars. Also, AWD is not possible to to space constraints due to the differences in the bodies and frames of the cars. I’m not saying that I’m an expert with these cars but from what I’ve seen over the years this is what I know. I will say that given enough time, skill and money anything is possible. Have you considered swapping in a LS1 corvette motor? That is another popular swap that is pretty straight forward.

Is there any good reason to spend extra money on premium gasoline?
ANSWER : Premium fuel should only be used if the manufacturer recommends it. You will see it printed on the fuel gauge if you are required to use it. All fuels sold in the USA have cleaners in the fuel now. Some name brands list different cleaners that they use and some name brands may be better than other in the cleaners they use but all have to meet minimum cleaning standards in the fuels. There is no need to use any fuel other than regular if that is all your car requires.

5.7l cuts out when you throttle the engine from a stop. Gets going sometime then hesitates. When it gets to 50 mph it runs fine.
ANSWER : Hi there. Check the IAC (idle air control valve) and see if its functioning. If the engine is having an issue with stumbling, the IAC could be causing the engine to stall out. If the IAC is working properly, then check the MAF (mass air flow sensor) to see if its dirty. A MAF sensor will cause the engine to also stumble when a low speeds if the sensor is malfunctioning. If the engine light is on, then use a scanner to check for any codes to have a starting location for diagnosis. If you need further assistance with your engine cutting out until 50 mph, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
