How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

The average cost for a Battery Cable Replacement is between $312 and $337. Labor costs are estimated between $69 and $87 while parts are priced between $243 and $250.
Replacing old battery cables will roughly cost between $250 to $300, while replacing worn out battery terminals will only cost about $20 each.
In most cases, replacing battery cables is a very simple procedure that can usually be carried out with only a few basic hand tools.
The average cost for a Battery Cable Battery Terminal End Service is between $26 and $33. Labor costs are estimated between $26 and $33.
Replace your car`s badly corroded battery cable terminals with new ones in about an hour. New terminals cost less than $20.
Usually, a battery cable will last anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 miles. The battery cables that are on your car are used quite frequently. Due to this amount of use, it is easy for them to wear. Generally, when a battery cable is damaged, it will not be able to be repaired.
Generally, vehicles have different types of battery cables and electrical systems.
The terminals on the battery in your car usually last around 50,000 to 100,000 miles before they need to be replaced.
Loss of electrical power

Another common symptom of a bad battery terminal is loss of electrical power. This usually occurs when a terminal is severely corroded or has broken. A severely corroded or damaged terminal that does not make good electrical contact may cause total loss of power.

You should never attempt to disconnect your car`s battery while your car is powered on. We`d also recommend using safety equipment, like gloves and safety goggles, if you have them on hand.
Mismatched chargers and cables won`t harm your battery

Unless you`re using counterfeit or damaged chargers and cables, mixing and matching cables and chargers is not going to harm your battery.

Wires get burned up for a number of reasons. These include: a chafed wire has shorted out on the sheet metal, wire ran too close to the exhaust, or too much current traveled through a small-gauge wire.
There are also positive and negative cables in the jumper cable set. The red one is positive (+), the black one is negative (-). Never connect the red cable to the negative battery terminal or a vehicle with a dead battery.
Reset the vehicle`s computer

Why you need to reset the computer: Your car`s computer—the ECU—reads data from your vehicle while it`s in operation, and a battery replacement disrupts this process. It needs a chance to clear error codes after a new battery is connected.

See all 2 photos2 photos Connecting the positive and negative battery cables together for approximately 5 minutes will drain all of the capacitors in the computers and forces them to cold reboot.
First the clamp of the red cable is connected to the positive terminal of the assisting vehicle. The other end of the red cable is connected to the positive terminal of the broken down vehicle. Then the black clamp is connected to the negative terminal of the assisting battery.
To connect the charger to the battery, first fasten the red cable to the positive terminal of the battery. Then connect the black cable to the negative terminal.
Thicker wires can carry more current for longer distances. Without getting into the math behind it, the reason for this is that a cable`s resistance increases as its diameter decreases or the length increases.
There are 4 main types of battery configurations:

negative on the left and positive on the right corner on the long side of the battery.

When negative terminal of cell is connected to other negative terminal of the cell in a particular circuit then, current will not flow in circuit as electrons cannot flow from negative to negative terminal.
It`s time to consider a replacement scenario. You don`t have to toss out the battery and wires entirely, however. Replacing just the battery terminals is an option that truly invigorates the battery`s longevity.

My battery cables are to short to reach the battery can I just add some wire or do I have to replace the whole thing
ANSWER : Hello. I would recommend purchasing and installing the correct length cables to avoid any potential connection issues when adding additional battery cable wire. As you may know, there are different thicknesses of electrical wire required for different loads of electricity to pass through them. Additionally, any time there is wire spliced together like this, you run the risk of connectivity issues. I would recommend purchasing the correct length cables to install.

Hi Roberts. How would you rate a Subaru Outback battery compared with consumer reports best rated battery like diehard, and others
ANSWER : The very first thing to do is have the battery load tested. If the battery passes a load test be sure it is NOT a marginal pass in which case you should simply install a new battery to reduce diagnostic headaches. As far as buying a new battery, there are actually relatively few battery manufacturers and so a lot of the output is identical but just carries a different brand name. You would be wise to consult "Consumer Reports", as they have already done all of the required battery research for you and so you can safely and reliably purchase whatever they deem to be a top rated battery. If and once you replace the battery, be sure to measure the output of the charging system to confirm that the alternator is properly re-charging the battery. I have a 2017 Tacoma that is 2wd drive and I would like to convert it into 4wd is that possible and how much would it cost?
ANSWER : You would have to change the transaxle. Changing the transaxle requires a different transmission control module interface which would in turn require either a different powertrain control module (most likely) or re-programming. The altered weight of the vehicle would require retrofit of the 4-wheel suspension that was built for the 4 wheel drive version and of course the front suspension, hubs, bearings, etc. would all have to be changed because those wheels would be driven. All the controls in the cab would have to be added. The ABS and traction control systems would probably have to be changed out. Roughly, all of this would cost at least $15,000 because all of those parts are dealer only and all will have to be bought new. As an economic proposition, it would be less costly, and you would reduce the substantial risk of technical issues arising, if you traded in the car and bought the version that was already factory equipped with 4 wheel drive. That will be the least cost option, and by a significant margin, principally due to the high cost of the individual parts (the mark up on the parts).
