ANSWER : You kind of answered your own question right there. They are not smooth. Americans typically like smooth stuff and they don’t like diesels because they aren’t smooth. Plus, they can smell pretty bad. No matter what you do, diesels smell. If you’ve ever been in Mexico City, have you noticed how much it stinks? There are a lot of diesels there and they just stink the environment to high heaven. I wouldn’t want to live in a place where everybody is driving diesels because they smell. The other thing is – they are very expensive to fix when they break. People I know who’ve owned diesels that have broken down know that they cost so much money to fix that, a lot of times, they never bought another diesel car. That’s why they are not popular in the United States.

Diesel pump not spraying diesel into the injector
ANSWER : Hi there. I would first check to be sure that the injector pump itself is getting diesel. Sometimes these pumps fail due to the fuel not being delivered to the injection pump sufficiently. I would also check to be sure there is not air in the system preventing fuel flow. Also, check the fuel filter to be sure it is clear and free flowing.

ANSWER : The 5.9L diesel is a straight six engine. The 6.6L diesel and the 7.3L diesel are both V8 engines. If find that there are more maintenance when it comes to the V-configured engines to the straight six engines. I have worked on many straight six diesel engines and many V8 diesel engines over my career. Most vehicles with the straight six engines are usually having problems with the fuel filters and the fuel injection pumps. The V8 diesel engines tend to have multiple issues with the turbos, the waste gate controls, and tend to have issues with the engine performance with the glow plug circuits. I recommend staying with what you have unless you are wanting to go up in power and have more torque. I have seen a Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel 24 valve put out 1200 foot pounds of torque and have over 600 horse power from stock settings with a smart box to change the pyrometer controls. A straight six engine is more comfortable in adjusting performance than a V-configuration engine.

How problem free is the Ford 3.2L Turbo Diesel compared to the Mercedes 3.0L Diesel used in small RV’s?
ANSWER : Personally I would take the Mercedes over the Ford, but the truth is, diesels are undergoing a massive engineering revamping of their emissions systems. Emissions on diesels is new to the automotive market making these systems problematic until the manufacturers figure out what will work best out on the roads. All the manufacturers are trying different systems. Mostly they are the same, but they are accomplishing the Federal requirements in different ways. Of course I am assuming your are asking about diesels that are newer than 2007 to 2010, which is when the emissions systems on the diesel were rolled out.

If your looking into anything older than 2007, my answer will change based on the decade. I would choose the Mercedes unless were talking about mid nineties and earlier. In which case, finding parts and maintaining older Mercedes motors is more difficult than an older Ford diesel.

The short answer is yes, Ford will likely have issues as well. If your looking at new off the lot, that might be your best bet because all the manufacturers are digging deep to improve the reliability of these systems. They have been forced by the EPA to begin rolling out these systems in 2007.

Diesel don’t want to come out of diesel pump
ANSWER : This is most likely a computer issue if the pump is working correctly. I would start with diagnosing the computer itself to be sure it is supplying power to the fuel pump. Check the fuel pump relay and fuses as well to eliminate those since they are also potential problems.
