Fuse box shorted by clogged pillar drains

Yesterday, my SUV wasn’t able to accelerate over 30 mph and the check engine light came on. I took it to my auto repair shop for a diagnostic and he reported that the fuse box had been shorted by the drains in the pillars that were clogged. Plus, he said that there was mold and water under the floorboard carpets of the front driver’s side and the passenger sides. The fuse box needed replacement and also the wiring harness needed cleaning. Plus the carpet would need replacing. I had been noticing a fishy smell in the SUV. Also, it stalled, after which I went to the dealership for diagnostic
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. I believe that clogged drains may be causing the problems you are experiencing with your 2009 Saturn Outlook. If water is getting onto the wiring, this creates corrosion, damage to the wiring, and ultimately cause other electrical components to fail – such as the battery, alternator, fuse box, or PCM. I would also have your charging system inspected to make sure your alternator is working properly. Have a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, complete an inspection to pinpoint any leaks or make any other repairs that may be needed.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Why is your check engine light on? When your car`s internal computer identifies a problem with the engine or transmission, it turns on the check engine light. The reasons for a check engine light turning on can range from something minor like a loose gas cap to something more serious like a faulty catalytic converter.
Check engine light goes on ONLY if there is an engine-related problem. Any kind of battery troubles , ignition lock issues or starter failures won`t turn this light on, even if they prevent your car from starting.
Sometimes, the check engine light comes on to let you know that there`s a problem with the car`s internal diagnostic mechanism. That means the system could be “finding” a problem that doesn`t exist, or it could be that loose wire systems are creating a false positive in the system.
Check your gas cap first. Many vehicles have a loose gas cap indicator that will be triggered before your check engine light comes on. If your gas cap is loose or the seal is not tight, the vapor leakage can cause your fuel system to trigger the check engine light.
If the check engine light illuminates, it will either blink or remain constantly illuminated, depending on the problem. A blinking light, or in some cars a red light instead of a yellow or orange light, indicates a problem that needs immediate attention. Either way, you should have the vehicle checked by a mechanic.
All the problems that could trigger a check engine light are serious. If the check engine light comes on, it`s one dashboard light you should not ignore. Whether for a week, a month, or a year, if you ignore the check engine light, it puts your vehicle, and by extension, your personal safety at risk.
Cylinders: If your battery is not functioning properly, the fuel injectors may not deliver enough fuel to the cylinders. This can cause a reduction in vehicle performance. Computer: A weak battery puts additional strain on the vehicle`s electrical and mechanical systems.
It controls these systems based on the data it gets from the numerous sensors inside your automobile. When a battery drains, it may send lower voltages of power which may or may not hurt your PCM. But it can definitely cause some problems that are related to your PCM due to it not receiving enough voltage.
Blown Fuse

If there has been a surge, a fuse that controls the fuel pump, the fuel injectors, or another component that`s vital for your car`s functioning, it may be the cause of your car`s failure to start. Unlike most of the other problems, this is one that you can check yourself, if you want.

It is possible that your automobile`s check engine light has come on because of a false alarm. This being said, if the engine control module (ECM) turned on the check engine light for no reason, the ECM could be malfunctioning itself. This crucial part is the heart of your automobile.
So how do you know when you have an emergency? You can judge how serious an issue is by looking at the warning light. The check engine light can show up in two ways: Solid yellow/amber light: Indicates a less urgent issue. Flashing light or red: Indicates a severe problem that needs immediate attention.
The check engine light illuminates when your vehicle`s computer believes there is a problem that could affect — or is affecting — your car`s emissions control system. When the light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes are stored in the car`s computer. These codes will stay there even if the light goes out.
How long can you drive with the check engine light on? Once you see the check engine light, it is safe to drive with the light on for 50 to 100 miles. This is because if the issue is with the sensors, then this will buy some time for it to reset, turning the check engine light off.

Fuse box shorted by clogged pillar drains

Battery drains quickly, New battery,Heavy drain, Replaced alternator , drain still there, goes away when bat. main 2 fuse is pulled
ANSWER : Hi there. It’s quite possible that you have one of two things causing the drain to the battery. First, you have a bad ground somewhere in the main relay or fuse box or an exposed wire somewhere that is not allowing the circuit to complete from the alternator to the battery. This can cause a battery draining issue as you’re describing, but it could also be one of multiple other electrical problems. The best way to pinpoint the exact source is to have a professional mobile mechanic come to your location and complete a battery will not hold a charge inspection.

Passenger seat heater not working properly.
ANSWER : Hello and thank you for contacting YourMechanic. The book says that you can use a 15, 20, 25, or 30 amp fuse. The power to the heaters are operated through the wiring to the main harness. There could have been a wire tied into it to make the seat work on the same circuit as the driver seat. This is common to find in the vehicles.

You can try putting a 15 amp fuse in the slot and see if the seat works. Try to avoid using a high amp fuse for if there is a problem with the heater you don’t want to burn it. If nothing seems to work, then the heater in the seat has failed and needs replaced.

If you need further assistance troubleshooting your vehicle, then seek out a technician, such as one from Your Mechanic, that can assist you with a seat inspection at your home or office. Best of luck.

Moisture in fuse box causes fuel pump fuse malfunction
ANSWER : For this, Silicone spray is one tool I personally like to use especially on rubber or silicone seals. The spray will leave a water-tight film on the electrical component and offers a moisture resistant coating. If you would like to have this checked, an expert, like one from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the electrical system in order to scope the problem out and pinpoint any problems.

Car blows ecm run/start fuse after starting and then dies replaced fuse and repeats
ANSWER : Hi there. Typically when this issue occurs, damage will be instant – meaning if it’s going to damage the ECU, replacing the fuses would not help start the vehicle. So, at first glance, I would assume the ECU is OK. What is more likely is that you have an exposed wire somewhere that is causing the fuses to pop. Trying to diagnose these issues can be tricky sometimes, so it might be a good idea to have a professional mechanic complete an electrical problems inspection to isolate why you’re having these issues and recommend the right repairs.

Engine Fuse Box
ANSWER : Yes, you should replace the entire fuse box. The reason for this is that it is quite likely that when the box burned other connections inside the fuse box were also damaged. This will in fact affect the vehicle starting as well. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to diagnose your starting issue and replace your fuse box if necessary.

Cant find the 33rd fuse in fuse box for drivers power seat
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. There are two fuse boxes located on the vehicle. One is under the hood in the main fuse box. It controls and protects the engine components. The other fuse box is located inside the cab of the car. This interior fuse box controls the components inside the cab, which includes the radio, windows, seats, and other driver controls. It is located below and to the left of the steering wheel. You will find fuse 33 there, and it too will have a diagram on the cover to show you which fuse it is.
