Especailly in the early mornings Gear knocks off as i drive until i put back to (P)park and (D) drive
As i drive to work in the morning (6am) , as i hit my drive(D) and down to the streets at about 10 mins.I notice that with my throttle pressed down its as if my car is in the (N) neutral but still roll then when i quickly move the gear handle to neutral and back its still the same until i move it to (P) Park and back it now drives normal this has happened for a week straight which is very usual.
Have checked transmission oil level fine or do i need to change?
pls i humbly need your feedback.
Thanks

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
This may indicate a failing speed sensor. The transmission speed sensor is a magnetic sensor that provides information related to the speed of the input and output shafts in the transmission, allowing the transmission to shift smoothly. The sensor counts the internal number of revolutions of the transmission and transmits that information to the transmission control unit, where the data is used to determine the rotational speed. As the rotation increases, the control unit directs the changing of gears. When this is not working properly, this may cause the transmission to shift erratically or in some cases not at all. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to take the car for a test drive to more specifically determine the cause for this.
How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Transmission failure – The dreaded transmission failure is also common with Xterra, especially in the 2005 model year. Again, the radiator defect is the main culprit of failed transmission systems in the Xterra. Rebuilding or replacing the transmission is very expensive.
The Xterra was discontinued in the U.S. after the 2015 model year. Poor fuel economy, declining sales, and mandated upgrades to safety and emissions were cited as reasons.

Nissan Transmission Problems
One common problem is the failure of the transmission to properly engage or shift gears, resulting in a jerky or hesitant driving experience. Another issue is the transmission overheating, which can lead to damage and potential breakdowns.
Hi Lotuscat, With a regular and consistent maintenace schedule your Xterra could easily run for 200,000 miles. My sister has an 8 year old Xterra that has 155,000 and has had very little problems. Good luck! 13 people think this is helpful.
Gas mileage is a not-so-hot 16 miles per gallon in the city and 21 mpg on the open road.
About Xterra
Based upon the popular design of a midsized pickup truck, the Xterra compact SUV by Nissan was released in 2000, offering a powerful V6 engine and plenty of features.
The Nissan Xterra is well-suited for going off-road, whether you`re following an old path or blazing a new one.
Generally, the issues have been reported between 2012/2013 and 2018. There were some problems in 2003 when Nissan first began using this transmission and in the 2007-2012 CVT generation. Specific models include the Murano, Sentra, Altima, Rogue, Versa, and Versa Note.
This mobile basecamp is powered by a 265-hp 4.0L V6, and the automatic versions get the Nissan RE5RO5A 5-speed automatic.
Nissan`s CVTs are known to be notoriously unreliable, & many owners complain about having to repair or even replace their car`s transmission more frequently compared to regular automatic or manual transmissions.
Such problems aren`t hard to spot. 2004 Nissan Xterra transmission problems could include shifting delays, grinding when accelerating, the car shaking on the road, or whistling noises and a burning smell coming from under the hood.

Started Three days a go. When I drive the car it doesn’t go in to gears but shows AT.
ANSWER : This kind of reaction is often a sign of low transmission fluid or a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car’s computer activates a transmission solenoid, which directs transmission fluid into the valve body to engage the correct gear. When this is faulty or not working properly, this can cause a delay in gear shifting or in some cases cause the car to not shift at all. This type of problem is amplified any time the transmission is low on fluid creating a drop in hydraulic pressure. I would recommend having a professional from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.
Getting it into Park after driving & Getting it out of park to drive the car.
ANSWER : You should have the shift cable disconnected from the transmission to make sure the hard shift problem is in the shift cable or shifter assembly and not in the transmission. The most common cause is going to be in the shifter mechanism due to problems in the shifter. Have the shifter cable disconnected at both ends and check to make sure it moves free or it binds and shifter moves free. You may need to replace the shifter or shift cable and would need to be isolated to what one is cause.
Shifting issues from drive to reverse and back to drive
ANSWER : Mercedes has a dealer service order (#Order No: S-B-27.19/118A

when I put my car in drive it won’t go but when I put it in low gear and up the RPM its will slowly take off then I have to shift
ANSWER : Hello. The transmission malfunctions you are experiencing can be caused by a wide variety of issues. A few common causes for improper shifting behavior are low or contaminated transmission fluid, transmission sensor issues, or a worn transmission. The first thing I would do is check the vehicle’s transmission fluid to make sure that it is clean and at the correct level. Automatic transmissions operate using fluid pressure and can experience all sorts of issues, including problems shifting, if the fluid is low or dirty. It may also be possible that one or more the transmission components has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Automatic transmission use a series of solenoids and sensors to control the transmission shifting point, and can cause symptoms similar to those you are experiencing if they go bad. Another possibility is that the transmission itself has worn out due to age and service, and may need to be serviced or even rebuilt. As these sorts of issues can sometimes be difficult to diagnose, I would recommend having a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to determine what the exact cause of your shifting and transmission problems.
My manual car won’t go into gear, it turns on and the clutch goes down perfectly fine. It happened after my gears grinded, the car
ANSWER : If the clutch mechanism is releasing properly, and the shift linkage is not malfunctioning, your transmission will have to be removed from the vehicle and inspected. Once a transmission has been removed from a vehicle, if the problem is a broken or worn part or parts, and the transmission has 100,000 miles or more, the most cost effective approach is to just simply rebuild the whole transmission. There are transmission rebuild kits that are sold just for this purpose. Rebuilding a transmission is no big deal and is indeed easier in many respects than rebuilding an engine. You can rebuild your transmission right in your own garage. You can NOT rebuild an engine in your own garage due to the highly specialized, and extremely costly, machine shop equipment required. Occasionally, mobile mechanics will take on a transmission rebuild job especially as once the mechanic removes the transmission from the vehicle, it is just simply a modular unit that can be easily transported to a mechanic’s shop and rebuilt right there and then returned to your vehicle. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
my car gear is stuck in drive but the gear shift goes to park car is in acc postion wont crank or swicth to off to remove the key
ANSWER : Hi there, thanks for writing in.
It sounds like you most likely have a broken shift cable, or a failed shifter assembly. A failure of either part would allow you to move the shifter handle to park, while the transmission actually remains in drive. Because it could be either of these parts, I would recommend having a qualified professional, such as one from YourMechanic, diagnose your shift issue.
While driving, the gears downshift and the car will not go into reverse.
ANSWER : Hello, thanks for writing in. Your description suggests that the transmission linkage is not correctly aligned, or is not staying in a correctly aligned position, from the steering column to the transmission itself. This is all external to the transmission itself. I would recommend having a shifting issue inspection completed by a professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who can diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and a cost estimate for repairs.
