Check Engine Light

Light has been on for 2 monthsi just bought it off my brother and got the code P0601 . Car runs pretty good and no trouble turning on. What can i do
My car has an automatic transmission.
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
When the Check Engine Light is illuminated and you’re able to download the P0601 OBD-II error code, it typically indicates that the internal control module within the ECU is either faulty or not receiving correct data from the transmission, ABS system or other drive components. Typically, the way to resolve this issue is to have a professional mechanic complete a diagnostic scan to download any sub-error codes that might pinpoint what is triggering this error code, then reset the codes once the issue has been resolved.

Other common reasons for a Check Engine Light are a malfunction with the fuel injection system, faulty head gasket, damaged oxygen sensor, dirty mass airflow sensor, faulty emissions control part, or defective spark plugs to name a few.

A loose gas cap is one of the most common reasons for the check engine light to go on. Check that your gas cap is screwed on securely and that it`s in good condition. If you have a tank of bad gas in the car, your check engine light may come on.
If the check engine light illuminates, it will either blink or remain constantly illuminated, depending on the problem. A blinking light, or in some cars a red light instead of a yellow or orange light, indicates a problem that needs immediate attention. Either way, you should have the vehicle checked by a mechanic.
“Check Engine” light oxygen sensors examine the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas leaving the engine. The sensor compares the oxygen inside the exhaust system to oxygen in the air outside the sensor. Rich exhaust has less oxygen; lean has more.
These problems can range from faults within the electrical system, the engine, fluid levels or to problems within the car`s emissions system. The problem can even be as simple as forgetting to tighten your gas cap – in fact, this is the most common reason why check engine lights appear in the first place.
Find it in the lower corner of your windshield on the driver`s side. Your VIN number is your vehicle identification number and you can find your engine size by VIN number. In the series of numbers and letters, the tenth from the left denotes the model year and the eighth is the engine codes.
Can you drive a car with the engine light on? It`s okay to drive for a few miles, but be sure to schedule an inspection of the engine as soon as possible. If the check engine light comes on while you`re driving, don`t panic! Pay attention and see if the car is driving any differently than normal.
A check-engine light will shut itself off if the condition that caused it is remedied. So, if your converter is marginal, and you did a lot of stop-and-go driving, which creates high demand for the converter, that might have turned on the check-engine light.
How long can you drive with the check engine light on? Once you see the check engine light, it is safe to drive with the light on for 50 to 100 miles. This is because if the issue is with the sensors, then this will buy some time for it to reset, turning the check engine light off.
Yes. While the damage may seem small initially, the longer you drive with a bad oxygen sensor, the worse the damage will become. Eventually, you may experience rough idling, poor acceleration, engine misfires, an illuminated check engine light, and failed emission tests.
Engine Misfires and Rough Idle

The tell-tale signs of a failing oxygen sensor include the engine misfiring or your vehicle running roughly or irregularly during idle. Additionally, there are other engine performance issues associated with a failing oxygen sensor such as stalling, hesitation, and loss of power.

Check your gas cap first. Many vehicles have a loose gas cap indicator that will be triggered before your check engine light comes on. If your gas cap is loose or the seal is not tight, the vapor leakage can cause your fuel system to trigger the check engine light.
How to Reset a Check Engine Light Without a Scanner. To reset a check engine light without a scanner, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait a few moments. This will reset the diagnostic system in your vehicle, and if the underlying issue has indeed been resolved, the light should go off immediately.
So, with the right diagnostic scan tool, automotive technicians can quickly and easily read the codes and data from your vehicle, even if the check engine light isn`t on.
There are thousands of possible diagnostic codes possible, some that are specific to a manufacturer or particular vehicle, and many that are generic across all vehicles.
A “1” indicates a fuel or air metering system problem, such as an issue with the mass air flow sensor. A “2” refers to fuel or air metering injection system issues, such as a fuel injector problem. A “3” indicates an ignition-related problem, such as an engine misfire.
There are four different types of OBD-II codes – P, B, C, and U. The P stands for powertrain (engine and transmission) systems, B for body, C for chassis, and U for network and wiring systems.
A common emissions code seen in the field, a P0420 trouble code indicates that the catalytic converter isn`t functioning efficiently. To work at peak efficiency, the emissions or feed gases entering the catalytic converter need to be perfectly balanced and not excessively elevated.
Worn/failed spark plugs, coil packs, or spark plug wires can trigger your check engine light to come on. In today`s cars, say Firestone Complete Auto Care technicians, if a plug starts to fail then the most obvious event should be the check engine light coming on or even flashing.
In some cars, a yellow check engine light means there is a problem that needs to be investigated and a red or flashing light means there is a serious problem and you need to stop right away. Your gauges will help you to determine problems like overheating and low oil pressure.
So why is the light still on? Here`s something you probably don`t know: after clearing the car`s computer you will need to drive for about 50 to 100 miles. As you drive your car the computer will monitor all the sensors and register the results.
Routine Maintenance Prolongs Your O2 Sensor`s Lifespan

Contaminated or dirty fuel injectors, engines that burn oil, and even a very dirty air filter can cause O2 sensors to become faulty. Dirty fuel or oil leave carbon deposits on your O2 sensor, which cause it to misread oxygen levels.

A simple test using the scanner to see if the O2 sensor is capable of reading correctly while monitoring the O2 voltage is to make the fuel mixture artificially rich by feeding propane into the intake manifold or tapping the accelerator several times quickly. You should see the O2 voltage go high, or rich.

Check engine light refuses to go off after engine replaced
ANSWER : Hello there, you have a long series of issues going on with your 2013 Hyundai Sonata. If you keep getting a repeating oil light on than there is likely a fault in that system.

Since this fault has lasted after the engine was replaced it could be a oil pressure sensor, wiring harness fault, ECU fault, oil pump, oil strainer clogged, or low oil pressure.

To diagnose this issue properly you need a complete vehicle inspection to start from square one and identify the root cause of all this.
