It sounds like you may have a sticky or faulty idle air control valve. The idle air control valve monitors the air intake as it is mixed with fuel prior to being injected into the engine at low speeds and at idle. This valve is controlled by the vehicle’s computer and will adjust idle speed based upon other measurements such as engine temperature, intake air temperature and electrical system load or voltage. This is also an important function when starting the motor as it allows the motor to run and idle on it’s own once the motor fires. When you accelerate, the engine RPM increases, and as you let off the gas, the RPM slowly returns to the normal idling speed with the help of the idle air control valve making the transition from a higher RPM back down to idle speed while adjusting the air/fuel ratio constantly to allow this to happen smoothly. When the engine RPM drops below the normal range of about ~800 RPM, this often times will cause the engine to stall indicating a dirty or faulty idle air control valve. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Common reasons for this to happen:

Low fuel pressure, dirty or defective fuel injectors, or broken fuel pump: The fuel pump is responsible for transferring fuel from the tank to the engine.

There are a few reasons why your Toyota Camry won`t start

If your Toyota Camry isn`t starting, then there are a few things you can check first. According to VEHQ, the top five reasons could be a dead battery, a defective alternator, a broken ignition switch, a clogged fuel filter, or an empty gas tank.

The most common reasons a Toyota Camry won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
The car stalls any time it should be idoling. This is most likely what is happening with the idle on your 2003 Camry: Over time their is a build up of deposits in the throttle body that will slowly restrict air flow.
The most common reason your car starts then dies immediately is because of a lack of fuel in the engine. This often happens because there is a small amount of fuel in the fuel rail, which helps to start the engine. However, there is no fuel pressure to keep the engine running.
The most common and obvious reason your car may start then die is the fuel shortage in your engine. This happens because there`s not enough fuel in the fuel rail, and there`s no fuel pressure to keep the engine alive. The reason isn`t always you forgetting to fill up your gas tank.
Engines usually stop suddenly only if they suffer from a lack of fuel or sparks . An engine that stops dead without prior warning has probably had a sudden ignition failure – although if it locks solid it`s more likely to have seized.
The most common Toyota Camry problem reported by owners is hesitation from the automatic transmission while accelerating — according to RepairPal. Resolving this issue usually requires revised software in the in-vehicle computer system. This revision makes a bigger difference for newer models of the midsize sedan.
Dead car battery: A dead battery is the most common reason why a car won`t start. If you have a battery tester, check your battery to see if it`s weak. If you don`t have one, try to jump start your car with jumper cables.
There are three major causes for a stalled engine: A lack of fuel, a lack of air flow and improper ignition. Running out of fuel is one of the most common causes of engine stalling, but dirty fuel injectors or a plugged fuel filter can also be the culprit. Your engine needs air to run properly as well.
Fuses – If the car dies while idling but restarts, there`s a possibility that there might be an issue with the fuses of the car. It`s conceivable that one of the fuses has blown. Take each fuse from the box and hold it up to the light.
Replace if any issues are found. This issue could be caused by an insufficient amount of fuel reaching the combustion chamber. For fuel issues, start by checking the fuel pressure. If it is low, look at the fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and injectors.
Most of the time when this occurs it is due to a lack of voltage. It can be from a failing battery or alternator.
If the vehicle randomly shuts off while driving or stationary, there is usually an issue with the engine. Typical patterns here are issues with the ignition system, mixture preparation or fuel. A known error here is that the vehicle was refueled with the wrong type of fuel.
Common culprits include a faulty fuel pump or fuel pump relay. A clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pressure regulator is also common on return-type fuel systems. Another often overlooked problem is the vehicle simply being out of fuel. Sometimes the fuel gauge breaks or is inaccurate.
The most common reasons a Toyota Camry engine stalling are the fuel system, the air intake system, or the ignition system. Search our network of RepairPal Certified shops near you to speak with a technician about your issue.

Replaced alternator on car 2 times each time shows it’s charging 14v let car run for a little bit then test drive and car voltage
ANSWER : There are reports that the replacement alternators will not communicate with the engine computer and will not charge correctly. I recommend using only the manufacturer approved replacement part. It can be new or remanufactured but approved for use in the vehicle. Some lower cost alternators on the aftermarket will have charging problems since they will not communicate with the ECM on the vehicle and will stop charging.

Car shuts off, won’t stay running
ANSWER : The most common problem on this vehicle is the fuel pump and fuel pump module. If you remove the rear seat that the fuel pump cover is, on the passenger side. Listen to the fuel pump when it is running and when the car stalls your fuel pump will stop running about three to five seconds before the engine dies. Then you’ll know if the fuel pump is the culprit or not.

You can try and replace the fuel pump module first then replace the fuel pump. However, the fuel pump can short the module out, causing both to be bad and would need to be replaced. If you need assistance with this, feel free to contact a certified mechanic who can diagnose your starting issue firsthand and help you fix it accordingly.

Power steering loss, no belts are turning but the car is running fine. I also have a soft pedal. Whats wrong with my car?
ANSWER : I have only seen this situation once in my 30+ years and it turned out to be a broken crankshaft pulley. Belts are driven by the engine. The crankshaft pulley spins the belts, which in turn spin the air conditioner compressor, power steering and water pumps, and the alternator. The vehicle should be towed to your local repair shop and not driven. Without the water pump spinning to circulate the coolant, the engine will quickly overheat and result in more extensive damage.

My fans stay on when I turn my car on and my temperature gauge stays on cool and will not move up even when the car is running
ANSWER : Hey there. This can be caused by a number of things such as low coolant levels, a faulty thermostat, or a failing coolant fan switch.

As you may know, the coolant fan switch helps to maintain the proper coolant temperature by turning on and off at specific temperature thresholds. When this switch is not working properly, this can cause the fans to come on intermittently, all the time or sometimes not at all.

In your case, if they are on continuously, this may not allow the car to reach normal operating temperature as you have noticed. When this happens, you will notice a temperature spike and drop occasionally as the fan comes on and off. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to diagnose your cooling system and pinpoint any needed repairs.

Car wont stay running. Will start up but shuts back off. Fuel pump doesnt come on. Car will run with wire from battery to wire har
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. With the testing you have done, we know the fuel pump is good, and that the rest of the system is functional. This leave the electrical circuit. There are a few components in the fuel pump circuit which could be causing the issue. The first to check is the fuel pump fuse/relay. If you have a voltmeter, you can trace the power from the battery to the fuse box, and along the circuit until you find the point in which power is lost. This is the fastest way to pinpoint the exact location of the problem. A visual inspection may also show you if there is a loose or disconnected wire, or excess corrosion somewhere causing extra resistance. After you sit with the car running, the car starts smoking and eventually starts shaking
ANSWER : Hi, thanks for writing in. It all depends where the smoke is coming from. If it is from the exhaust then your engine be running rich and starting to foul out the spark plugs. Have the computer tested to see if any codes are present that could indicate what is causing the smoke. If you see smoke from the engine compartment then you may be running the engine hot due to low airflow over the radiator. Have the cooling fan checked to make sure it is running. If it is running and the vehicle has the AC running and the blower is on or near high then you may be using more energy than the alternator can keep up with. This can cause the radiator fan to not turn as fast as it should and let the temperature to rise if idled for long periods. If you would like help, consider having an expert automotive technician from YourMechanic come to your home or office to inspect and diagnose this issue for you, and make or suggest any repairs as needed.

Car dosent not stay on and it’s running very rich
ANSWER : The MAP sensor relies on the correct signals being sent to it. It is possible that the sensor itself may be working properly, but that the input signal to it may not be working properly. Try checking this along with the O2 sensor as well as this can also cause the car to run rich if it is picking up incorrect exhaust gases and making the wrong changes to the fuel mixture. If you need help pinpointing the fault, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to diagnose the stalling problem and assist with repairs.
