Car won’t start and key fob won’t open or lock doors even after changing its batteries

I started my car earlier today and it kind of seemed like it was dead but just seemed like a delay start. I also tried locking and unlocking doors at the same time and the key fob won't work. I can't lock the doors manually either from the door panel inside the car either. Any idea?

My car has 143000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hello. If there was a delay in the engagement of the starter, but it was fine once it did engage, then most of the time this is caused by an issue with the starter relay or the ignition switch. Both of these are common problems in this car. They would have to be diagnosed with a voltage meter as the issue is occurring to know for sure what is going on. As for the door lock, most of the time the lock arm gets caught in the door panel and this occurs. In some cases the panel will need to be removed and trimmed to fix this. If you want to have this delayed start and lock problem fixed, a technician from YourMechanic can come to your home or office to diagnose the starter problem and replace the starter relay or ignition switch if necessary.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

If your key fob still isn`t functioning after you`ve replaced the batteries, the problem may be with the internal contacts, such as the buttons or the battery connector terminals. It`s also possible that your car and remote unpaired from each other after you took the batteries out.
The most common reasons a Chrysler 300 won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
Dead key fob battery

A bad battery in the key fob is most commonly the reason for a failure to send signals to the keyless entry system. If it is available, use the spare key fob to open the vehicle and start the ignition. If the spare fob is not available, use the provided key embedded in the fob to unlock the door.

If I change the battery in either the car or key fob do I have to reprogram the key fobs? No, The key fobs use non-volatile memory, meaning that they will never lose their programming if power to either the key fob itself or the module is lost.
The fuse has blown for the control circuit or module of the keyless entry system. Refer to your owner`s manual for the corresponding fuse, locate the fuse box, and then test the fuse. Use a test light while the fuse is in place or remove the fuse completely to do a continuity test using a multimeter.
The most common reason cars don`t start is a dead or faulty battery. Even though most cars run on gasoline, they all require electrical power to function. The starter that cranks your engine to start requires an electrical signal to fire. If something`s wrong with your battery, your car engine won`t turn over.
Insert your ignition key and turn it to Accessory (or press the start button once without pushing the brake pedal). Press the Lock button on your remote car starter. Within five seconds of turning it on, turn your key back to the “off” position (or press the start button again).
No Programming

If you allow a key fob with a battery to go dead, it can lose its initial programming. This is because any key fob must be “paired” to the car it is meant to operate.

Remove the battery from the key fob and put it back in (unless you put in a new battery) Remove the battery cables from the vehicle, wait 30 seconds, then hook them back up (reset computer). Put the key in the ignition and turn the key to the `ON` position.

Doors don’t lock/unlock from Key Fob or inside car, Key Fob doesn’t open trunk, transmission locked, AUTO headlights not working
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The charging system needs to be inspected. With the vehicle off, remove the negative battery cable and the the positive in order to remove the battery from the vehicle. From there you can inspect the battery cables, and the battery’s ground connection. Make sure the opposite ends of the battery cables are clean, dry, and tight (the positive will need to be traced to the starter and the fuse box). Clean the battery cables if they appear to be corroded or dirty. Reinstall the battery after making sure it was disconnected for at least 10 minutes, as it should reset the memory. Make sure the battery cables are connected securely. Attempt to start the vehicle and put it into gear. If it does not work, then you will want to try cycling the key, and possibly checking into the alternator and other components in the charging system. The new battery may not be working because the alternator has failed to keep it charged. Only further testing will tell at that point. Driver and Passenger doors won’t lock, but I hear them click and see the locks twitch.
ANSWER : If the same problem is happening even when you use the inside door lock switch then the most likely cause of the locks not moving is going to be weak actuators. You should replace the drivers lock actuator first since it is used the most and you will see it fixes the problem. Then you can replace the other doors as needed.

Car won’t start. The check engine light, battery light, and oil change light are coming on. I tried jumping the car and nothing happened. Why won’t my car start?
ANSWER : Hi and thanks for contacting Your Mechanic. If sometimes your vehicle will start with the new alternator and sometimes it won’t, then there is a loose connection in your charging system. Check all of the wires to the alternator and to the battery. Make sure that the battery cables are clean and tight. Make sure that the wires to the starter are clean and tight. A loose ground to the ignition system will cause the vehicle to not crank over. Check all of the ground wires from the battery to the starter. Make sure that they are clean and tight. If you need further assistance troubleshooting your no start situation, then seek out a technician, such as one from Your Mechanic, that can assist you.

I have a 2015 chrysler 200. There is a message that states Key Fob not detected. I have changed out the batteries in the key fob.
ANSWER : Hi There,
This is a known problem in many Chrysler vehicles and is usually related to having the wireless fobs re-flashed or in some cases, a new ECM is installed. I would suggest having the car towed to your nearest Chrysler dealer as this is likely something only they will be able to fix.

all doors lock only by inserting key in passenger side door and locking
ANSWER : Your central locking system may have been designed with a control module in the circuit. This is a small computer that is responsible for controlling the different functions of a particular system. It is possible that the module for your central locking system may have shorted out internally preventing particular functions from working properly. I would recommend having a certified technician test your central locking module to determine if all of its functions are working properly.

Car Won’t Start
ANSWER : Hello. From what you describe it would appear that your vehicle is having some sort of malfunction with the security system. It may be possible that the security system is enabled and preventing the vehicle from starting. This may or may not be related to the the recent battery replacement for the remote, or it could also be related to the EPS light. The EPS light comes on when the computer detects an issue with the vehicle’s electronic power steering system. There are cases where a steering malfunction will prevent the vehicle from starting, if the issue detected is serious enough to significantly affect the vehicle’s handling. It is unlikely that the brake fluid or engine oil are related to the issue, but it would not be a bad idea to make sure that they are topped off. I would recommend retrieving the trouble codes that are setting off the EPS light, as they will likely reveal some information on what the issue may be. Also keep in mind that a no start condition can be caused by other things, such as issues with the ignition system, or even the starter itself. As these sorts of electrical issues can sometimes be difficult to diagnose, I would recommend having a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to [diagnose the cause of your warning light, and if it may be related to the no start condition.

My car will not start Intermittently. I purchased a new battery 2 weeks ago and yesterday the car wouldn’t start. Got a jump and
ANSWER : The issue you are having is probably due to an intermittent fault in the starter motor itself or a deficiency in the starter electrical circuit, for example a large voltage drop due to a poor ground or a high resistance connection. These issues can be readily diagnosed and resolved on a mobile basis if you request a hard starting diagnostic. If you request that diagnostic, the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you promptly. Based on Toyota’s Factory Service Manual, the battery should not be disconnected if the vehicle engine is running. The battery acts as a large resistive voltage sink and consequently taking the battery out of the circuit, while the alternator is still running, can create a voltage spike on the car’s electrical system which is not good for voltage sensitive components such as the engine computer. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
