Car will not shift and stalls

After purchasing my car this year, I only had nearly 600 miles on it when I started having problems with the clutch and transmission. I was leaving the highway and shifted out of 6th gear. Then I was about to shift into 3rd while driving through an intersection and it would not shift into any gear; it was stuck in neutral and I had the clutch pedal completely depressed. I then pulled over to the side of the street, turned off the car and then restarted it before the transmission would go into gear.

Next, the problem occurred again at 3500 miles. I was driving on the highway having to shift f

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hey there. Considering the burning smell, there may be a problem in the hydraulic circuit of the clutch system. A failing clutch master or slave cylinder can cause the problems you are having. To have this diagnosed more thoroughly, a certified technician from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the shifting and stalling problem to have this addressed correctly.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Oftentimes, hard shifting can occur when you fail to change transmission fluid at the recommended interval. In the event that your transmission fluid gets low or dirty, your vehicle`s ability to shift could become compromised.
In most loose clutch cases with a hydraulic system, it is a probably an issue with the master cylinder. Internal or external damage to the cylinder can cause the hydraulic fluid to leak out and it simply will not perform properly once the fluid is too low. Sometimes, it is simply a worn seal that needs to be replaced.
The 2016 WRX comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and offers an optional performance automatic transmission, the Sport Lineartronic™ with manual mode.
The Vehicle Speed Sensor measures vehicle speed. When it fails the transmission can stop shifting or shift late and harsh. A bad VSS may also inhibit overdrive and the converter clutch.
Automatic transmissions that shift hard, jerk or shake during a shift change may mean your transmission fluid needs changed or fluid level is low. In manual transmission vehicles, abnormal gear shifts could indicate damaged gear synchros, worn clutches or other, more severe issues.
Turn off your vehicle`s ignition and wait patiently for 5 to 10 seconds. Start the engine and allow it to idle for several seconds. Switch off the ignition and wait patiently for another 30 to 40 seconds. Repeat these steps 2 to 3 times in order to reset your vehicle`s transmission control module.
Bad Transmission Control Module Symptoms

Slow Acceleration: It takes longer than normal for your vehicle to pick up speed. Gear Slippage: Your transmission switches gears without warning or without you shifting. Inability to Shift: You can`t shift out of neutral.

Sudden failure is most often caused by a broken or loose clutch cable, linkable or a failed hydraulic master/slave cylinder. There can also be leaks in the hydraulic line or even the disc could be contaminated with something like dirt or debris.
The most obvious and common causes for poor shifting are down to poor adjustment and the most common thing to go out of adjustment is cable tension. Indexed drivetrains rely on correct cable tension so that the shifters pull the derailleur to the intended spot.

When shifting into 1st gear and attempting to take off, car shakes and then stalls. Car also won’t let me shift into reverse.
ANSWER : Hi there. Either the shifter rail is damaged inside the transmission keeping the gears from going into reverse and the first gear from connecting all the way, or the transmission first and reverse gears are damaged causing the transmission to have a hesitation on the forward 1st gear and no reverse. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose your transmission shifting issue.

Could this cause ur car to stall in warmer weather? My car never stalls during winter months. But from spring on its a neverendin
ANSWER : You should have the check engine light and engine scanned to see if the engine may be running lean due to low fuel pressures or clogged injectors. You should also have the mass airflow sensor cleaned and checked for proper readings and replace if not within specifications. The vehicle runs richer in colder weather and may be the reason for not stalling. You should clean injectors, clean throttle body and idle control valve then clean mass air sensor and relearn idle.

Car shifts hard and rpms rev high on there own or car doesn’t shift at all, ABS and traction control lights are on also. 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
ANSWER : Hi there – first task is to be sure the transmission fluid is at the proper level, and in good condition (more pink than black, and no burned smell). Low fluid, or dirty fluid, can cause lots of unexpected transmission behavior. The second task is to check for problem codes, whether the Check Engine light is illuminated or not. The possible problem we’re looking for here is a failing throttle position sensor – which interacts with the transmission controller and affects shifting behavior. I recommend a transmission inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, and give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Replaced alternator on car 2 times each time shows it’s charging 14v let car run for a little bit then test drive and car voltage
ANSWER : There are reports that the replacement alternators will not communicate with the engine computer and will not charge correctly. I recommend using only the manufacturer approved replacement part. It can be new or remanufactured but approved for use in the vehicle. Some lower cost alternators on the aftermarket will have charging problems since they will not communicate with the ECM on the vehicle and will stop charging.

When car is shifted into drive car will not go forward when pressing gas it just rev the engine. But when shifted into reverse car
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. The color and condition of the transmission fluid should be a huge indicator. Low transmission fluid is one of the leading causes of issues with the transmission. You will want to start by refilling the transmission fluid, following manufacturer directions and specifications on the type and the amount of fluid. If this makes a difference, then you know the lack of good hydraulic fluid in the system was the immediate cause of your problems. This does not always mean that the transmission is not having other issues, as burnt fluid is not a good sign in a vehicle that is only 6 years old. Burnt fluid can also be a sign of how hard the vehicle is being driven. If filling the transmission with fresh fluid does not solve the issue, then the transmission needs to be inspected by a transmission specialist. Unless properly trained, automatic transmissions are incredibly difficult to work on at home.

The engine stalls when I put the car in reverse, but if I go past reverse into drive there is not an issue.
ANSWER : Hi there. Usually when you shift into reverse and engage the brake it will cause the engine RPM to drop; as it’s creating a load against the transmission and the engine. If the engine stalls, it may be caused by a faulty idle control valve, bad O2 sensors, or clogged fuel injectors.
