Car stalls and stops while driving

My car was stalling during acceleration. The check engine light came on and when I got it read a p0101 came up which had something to do with my mass air flow sensor. When I got the sensor replaced it did the same thing and the car stopped while driving and at red lights and stop signs. But the engine still starts what my be the problem?

My car has 114000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
If the same fault code returned after the mass air flow sensor replacement, then the fault lies elsewhere. There can be a wiring problem between the electronic control module and the air flow sensor. If a wire is broken or shorted, the signal between the mass air flow sensor and engine control module. Also, there can be an air flow issue caused by a vacuum leak or air intake leak. If the air intake boot is cracked, broken, or loose, the sir flow signal can be out of range. Also, if there is a vacuum leak from the intake manifold or manifold gasket for example, this can create a faulty air flow signal reading. Too much air will effect the air/fuel mixture and can cause a rough running or stalling.

Have a certified technician look into the stalling condition to isolate the exact cause.

Common reasons for this to happen:

Low fuel pressure, dirty or defective fuel injectors, or broken fuel pump: The fuel pump is responsible for transferring fuel from the tank to the engine.

The most common reasons a Chevrolet Malibu engine stalling are the fuel system, the air intake system, or the ignition system. Search our network of RepairPal Certified shops near you to speak with a technician about your issue.
If the vehicle is randomly turning off like this, it is almost always caused by a bad crank position sensor. It`s very common, and if it happens intermittently, it will not turn on the Check Engine Light. Click here for more details about the problem you`re experiencing. Hope this helps!
DETROIT – The 2014 Malibu ECO is the first in its segment with a standard engine featuring fuel-saving stop/start technology. It shuts down the engine in certain driving conditions to reduce fuel consumption.
Engines usually stop suddenly only if they suffer from a lack of fuel or sparks . An engine that stops dead without prior warning has probably had a sudden ignition failure – although if it locks solid it`s more likely to have seized.
If the vehicle randomly shuts off while driving or stationary, there is usually an issue with the engine. Typical patterns here are issues with the ignition system, mixture preparation or fuel. A known error here is that the vehicle was refueled with the wrong type of fuel.
Some of the most common include transmission problems, electrical issues, and interior accessory faults. Still, none come close to the damage the worst models might sustain. If you invest in one of these models, you can feel comfortable on the road.
A faulty crankshaft position sensor will be unable to identify the exact piston position, triggering an engine misfire. This causes your car to shut off while driving. A drop in performance, fuel efficiency, rough engine, etc., are some important symptoms of a damaged crankshaft position sensor.
The dash lights coming on and vehicle shutting down are, most likely, related to a charging system problem. It`s fairly common for all the dash lights to come on with no alternator output, low voltage can cause unusual electrical issues. The alternator should have been tested at the time of battery replacement.
Auto Start/Stop Technology automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a full stop and idles for more than a few seconds. Once the driver puts pressure on the accelerator, then the engine turns back on.
When a Chevrolet Mailbu displays its engine power-reduced message, it can mean that there is a problem with the car`s engine. The message also means that the Mailbu has reduced power in the engine to compensate for this issue. If this happens, there is no need to panic, as your Malibu will still be able to run.
Some of the most common include transmission problems, electrical issues, and interior accessory faults. Still, none come close to the damage the worst models might sustain. If you invest in one of these models, you can feel comfortable on the road.
The most likely issue is a clogged fuel filter. The purpose of the fuel filter is to ensure that dirt and debris stay out of the fuel system, so over time, it may need cleaned or replaced. When the fuel filter is clogged, the fuel pump has to work much harder, resulting in a far less efficient drive.
Weak Battery

Your engine relies on air and gasoline to run, but many of the systems also rely on electricity. A weak battery or failing alternator can cause engine trouble, including cutting and stalling. Dim headlights and slow accessories are also a sign of these electrical problems.

I got gas the day after my car stopped moving after applying the brake at a stop sign. Now it wont drive 2008 Chevy Aveo
ANSWER : Hi – first thing to check is for proper transmission fluid level. If fluid level is correct, this may be a transmission failure (forward clutches). I would recommend a transmission inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

My car is briefly shutting off when driving and stalling out when stopped.
ANSWER : Hello. Stalling issues can arise from a variety of faults. Have any warning lights come on? You may want to have the vehicle scanned for codes anyway. Typically you turn to the fuel and spark first to make sure they are working correctly first. You can hook up an inline fuel gauge to make sure you are getting the proper amount of fuel to the engine. This needs to be placed after the fuel filter to test that as well. You can test the spark plug wires to make sure the plugs are receiving a strong enough signal. You may also want to pull the plugs and make sure they are not fouled and are gapped correctly. Several sensors may also be failing, but those should show up on a diagnostic scan. With an issue like this, start with the easiest components to test and work your way through the possibilities until you find the fault.

Car not speeding up smoothly, service engine light on when first start driving and car vibrating
ANSWER : Hi There,
It sounds like you may have a dirty or faulty mass air flow sensor. The problem this can cause may also be compounded when the engine is cold due to the change in air density in cooler weather. The mass air flow sensor monitors air intake as it is mixed with fuel prior to being injected into the motor. This sensor relays information about fuel and air temperature, air speed entering the motor and many other things to the ECM which uses this to make adjustments to fuel supply to the motor. A dirty or faulty sensor can cause an imbalanced air/fuel load to be supplied to the motor which results in an over fueling or under fueling situation depending on the conditions. This type of inconsistent fuel supply to the motor may cause a hesitation, loss of power, a jerking reaction, potentially a bit of black exhaust smoke and typically a strong smell of fuel when this sensor is malfunctioning. I would suggest having a professional from Your Mechanic come to your home to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.

Could this cause ur car to stall in warmer weather? My car never stalls during winter months. But from spring on its a neverendin
ANSWER : You should have the check engine light and engine scanned to see if the engine may be running lean due to low fuel pressures or clogged injectors. You should also have the mass airflow sensor cleaned and checked for proper readings and replace if not within specifications. The vehicle runs richer in colder weather and may be the reason for not stalling. You should clean injectors, clean throttle body and idle control valve then clean mass air sensor and relearn idle.

My car stops when engine gets warm and while I am driving I stop on red light and car suddenly turn off and I have to hit starter
ANSWER : Hello, from what you’ve described it sounds like you are having several different issues. The starter should have nothing to do with it stalling, but it will have something to do with the car restarting if it doesn’t turn the engine well. The stalling can be from the distributor or possibly a computer sensor.

The scenario where you hit a car from behind may be from another problem, alongside with the idling of the engine. Without knowing the model and engine size of your car I can only say so much. I would suggest having a mechanic do a thorough check of the entire car to check the engine, brakes, and computer systems to see if the problems can be identified and repaired, or at the very least quoted.

Car stalls, and then stops, after I restart it goes a bit and stops again. Speed is low
ANSWER : Hi and thanks for contacting YourMechanic. All three codes refer to the pressure control solenoid in the transmission. Check the fluid level and top it off if the fluid is low. Check the harness to the transmission for any corrosion, moisture, oil, or any broken / bent pins. If the fluid is good and the harness is good, then you will need to replace the pressure control solenoid. If you need further assistance troubleshooting your transmission, then seek out a technician, such as one from YourMechanic, that can diagnose your vehicle’s stalling problem and assist with repairs.

After driving awhile, when idling, RPM drops below 500 & car stalls. Happens rarely but RPM fluctuates, and drops suddenly.
ANSWER : If you are having a stalling problem then you may have a computer code stored in memory. I suggest having the computer scanned to see if there is any codes stored and diagnose them as needed. The intake hose and air filter should be inspected for leaks in the hoses and dirty or leaking air filters. If the air filter is dirty or leaking then have the mass air sensor cleaned. If you still need help, have a mechanic diagnose the stalling issue for you and let you know exactly what repairs should be done.

Replaced alternator on car 2 times each time shows it’s charging 14v let car run for a little bit then test drive and car voltage
ANSWER : There are reports that the replacement alternators will not communicate with the engine computer and will not charge correctly. I recommend using only the manufacturer approved replacement part. It can be new or remanufactured but approved for use in the vehicle. Some lower cost alternators on the aftermarket will have charging problems since they will not communicate with the ECM on the vehicle and will stop charging.
