I was told that the thermostat was not opening up causing the engine to have a muffled sound. This is sending a message that the car is overheating, even though it is not. It could need the temperature sending gauge replaced. In addition, the Engine and Transmission message continues to light up. The car also struggles to accelerate in drive. I've had two different diagnosis for the problem and need to figure what is going on so I can get it fixed.

Reasons a Car Overheats

Transmission Fluid Problems
Low fluid levels or old transmission fluid causes friction between the parts and causes overheating.
If your car is overheating, there are a few things you can do to try to solve the problem: Check the coolant level and add coolant if necessary. Check for leaks in the cooling system and repair them as needed. Clean any debris from the radiator and cooling fans.
The most likely issue is that a component is clogged. A clogged fuel filter is the most common reason, although a loss of power in your car could also indicate problems with the fuel pump or fuel line. Impurities or debris may be blocking the system, which causes the loss of power in a car.
A bad thermostat can result in low heater output, overheating, poor fuel economy, knocking or pinging when accelerating, high idle speed, an electric cooling fan that runs continuously, and low temperature gauge readings.
Overheating can also lead to a lack of hydraulic pressure in your transmission, which could cause your transmission to slip and struggle when it tries to engage and change from one gear to the next. This causes parts and friction material to wear out rapidly.
Why is my car overheating but it has coolant in it? It could be that the coolant concentration is not correct, or you may have a bad thermostat, a failed water pump, broken drive belt, or a bad radiator or radiator fan.
Technically speaking yes you can use plain water in your cooling system but it isn`t recommended as a long term solution and certainly not in extreme weather conditions.
What sound does a bad water pump make? Any high-pitched sound, or an increasingly loud whining sound as you accelerate is usually coming from the car water pump. The same sound happens when a belt is loose, or the bearings are bad. No matter which of these it is, getting your car to the mechanic is a must.
You will feel a loss in power while accelerating and at times intermittent jerks. To solve this issue find the fuel filter located in the engine bay or near the fuel tank in your car`s trunk. If the fuel filter is clogged replace it if you have the skills to do so or get it changed at your local mechanic shop.
Wait until the gauge moves back to the normal range or the light extinguishes before you open the hood. DON`T wait for it to get better on its own. An overheating engine won`t repair itself, and you should bring your car in to Jiffy Lube as soon as you can.
Fixing an overheating engine
Thankfully, this problem can be easily corrected. Simply run the engine at a fast idle with clean oil, treated with Flushing Oil Concentrate (FOC) for 30-45 minutes, and bring the entire oil wetted side of the engine back to pristine cleanliness.
An overheating engine won`t resolve on its own, even if it seems to be fixed after you add a little coolant. It will only get worse if left unaddressed.
