Can i replace a california emissions fuel pump witha federal emissions fuel pump on a 06 nissan altima manual transmission

I am replacing a fuel pump. Under the hood states California Emissions but the fuel pump I purchased is federal emissions can I use the new one or no?

My car has 178000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
When you go to replace your fuel pump and find that there is a big difference in the 49 states part versus a California certified part you will need to use only the California certified part since some vehicle emission systems are designed different to meet the California emission standard that is more strict than the Federal standard. The non California part may not even fit and function the same and cause problems with your vehicle.

As long as a fuel pump provides the Flow Rate your engine needs at the pressure your Fuel Injected or Carbureted system requires, it will work just fine. It is just a matter of deciding which one works best for your installation.
While each type of fuel pump works a little differently, they all serve the same purpose—to move fuel through the system and into the combustion chamber. The three types of fuel pumps we`re covering today are: the rotary pump, the inline pump, and the high-pressure common rail pump.
As a result, it is often the case that original replacement mechanical pumps are no longer available. If this is the case, the installation of an electric fuel pump is a practical, cost-effective solution.
Internal engine leaks in your vehicle: Newer cars are complicated, one leak in your fuel pump or other parts of your cars engine can cause you to fail the emissions test as well.
A diesel transfer pump is designed for transferring diesel fuel, and it can not be used to pump gasoline. The primary reason is that the gasoline is more flammable than diesel.
In some cases, using the wrong fuel is harmless. Other times, like if you accidentally put E85 fuel in a car that`s not designed for it, you can void your engine warranty or cause costly damage to fuel lines. The price to fix a car from a fueling mishap can be steep, but there`s no reason to panic.
Leave the mechanical pump in place and put an electric one by the tank: You can do this if you want to keep your mechanical fuel pump as a backup in case your electric fuel pump gives out. This is arguably unnecessary because electric fuel pumps are designed to last a long time.
The biggest difference between electrical and mechanical fuel pumps is that mechanical pumps rely on moving parts to pull fuel out of the tank and into the engine, whilst electrical pumps use electricity and computer power to push fuel to the engine.
What Happens If A Fuel Pump Isn`t Installed The Right Way? If a fuel pump isn`t installed correctly, it either won`t work at all or won`t supply enough fuel to the engine. When the fuel pump isn`t working right, your engine isn`t getting the amount of fuel it needs to run well.
An air pump, also commonly referred to as a smog pump, is an emissions component that is part of the secondary air injection system. It is responsible for pumping clean air into the vehicle`s exhaust stream to promote a cleaner and more complete burn before the fumes exit the tailpipe.
Impurities in the gas tank can cause the fuel pump to work harder than normal to move the fuel to the engine. Fuel delivery systems have a filter to keep contaminants from reaching the engine. If the filter isn`t replaced per the manufacturer`s schedule, it can restrict the flow and force the pump to wear prematurely.
A fuel system with a Return Style Regulator or a Non-Return Style Regulator can use a bigger fuel pump than you actually need with no problem.
If your fuel pump is not delivering enough fuel pressure to meet specifications or not pumping enough fuel to keep up with the engine, it may need to be replaced. This can be completed in 12 seamless steps; however, it is recommended to have an assistant to facilitate the process.

Can i replace a california emissions fuel pump witha federal emissions fuel pump on a 06 nissan altima manual transmission
ANSWER : When you go to replace your fuel pump and find that there is a big difference in the 49 states part versus a California certified part you will need to use only the California certified part since some vehicle emission systems are designed different to meet the California emission standard that is more strict than the Federal standard. The non California part may not even fit and function the same and cause problems with your vehicle.

Can you use a California emission fuel pump or will federal fuel pump work
ANSWER : Depending on your state, this should normally not be an issue as a California fuel pump and Federal fuel pump both run the same amount of fuel pressure. The issue is whether or not you live in California. If you do, then I would suggest using a California pump as these are designed to comply with California emissions laws. The California pump will likely have some kind of an additional plug that is for the fuel vapor pressure sensor. If you do not live in California, this should not be an issue for you. I would recommend having the car looked at by a mobile technician, like one from YourMechanic, since you can’t get the car going. They’ll be able to diagnose the starting issue firsthand for an accurate repair. Good luck.

Just replaced my fuel pump but its not getting any power tested fuel pump relay and fuel fuse both good tested the wires all good.
ANSWER : You need to look at the theft light on dash to make sure it comes on and goes off when you turn the key to the on position. If light comes on and stays on then your theft system is causing the fuel pump to not be engaged. I recommend you check the theft system and then scan the computer for theft system codes. You may need to reprogram the keys to work or you have an bad sensor for the ignition key in the steering column.

Replaced fuel pump. Car won’t start. 2002 Infinity I35
ANSWER : Hi there – the metal component you describe is a fuel check valve on the fuel return line. Its function is to maintain a small amount of pressure in the fuel system so that starting does not require the fuel pump to run very long before the engine will start. Having replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter, I would check fuel pressure while the car is running. This is to check the fuel pump relay for burned contacts that won’t support full electrical current to the pump, and for proper fuel pressure – a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator could also restrict power and higher speeds if pressure is too low. I would recommend an inspection of the fuel system by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Engine crank, no coil spark, fuel pump does not kick in.
ANSWER : Hi there. There could be multiple issues causing your lack of spark problem, ranging from a minor electrical short in the main relay to an issue with your ECU. In order to know for sure, you should have a professional mobile mechanic complete an electrical problems inspection.

Fuel pressure
ANSWER : Hello,
You may want to try checking the fuel pump relay. The relay wires should have ground on two wires, power on one wire and switched power on another wire. To activate the fuel pump your ECU actually connects one of the ground wires to complete the circuit and send power to the fuel pump. If the wires all have power running through them, then it is likely you have a faulty relay. The wire coming from the fuel pump is the other ground wire. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose your wiring as this can be very difficult and time consuming without the proper wiring diagram.

Not getting fuel from fuel tank replaced fuel pump and filter I have a 85 720 nissan pick up
ANSWER : Hi there. I would recommend checking the fuel pump fuses to be sure the fuel pump is getting power to it. Also, check the ground wire to the fuel pump as well as this is a common issue when they become loose or burnt or shorted. If the pump is working, check to be sure the pump is moving the fuel to the throttle body. If this is not working, you may have an issue related to the power to the injectors. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your home to diagnose the related electrical circuits to pinpoint the problems.

I replaced the fuel pump and now my truck won’t start
ANSWER : Hi there:

In some cases, when the fuel pump is not supplying fuel from the tank to the fuel injectors it’s due to one of three different issues. First, it’s possible that the pump or some of the hose attachments are installed backwards or that there is a blockage somewhere in the fuel lines; typically at the first fuel filter. Finally, it’s possible that you have a ground issue somewhere near the fuel pump that’s causing a reduction in power. The best way to trace this issue is to contact a mobile mechanic and have them help you diagnose this issue; as the process for tracing a fuel pump delivery issue can be complex and very time consuming.
