Blocking shifting into reverse
I own a used Spectra 5 and when I tried to shift into reverse like normal the gear resists.
There was no grinding and double clutching doesn't work. It felt like something was blocking me from going into reverse. But when I shifted quickly it went right into gear with no problems. I shifted into my other gears just fine. Do you know what might be causing this?
Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hey there, thanks for writing in about your 2008 Kia Spectra5. The first thing I would do is try shifting it with the engine shut off. Shift it into reverse and through the other gears. If it shifts easily with the engine off, but difficult with the engine running, that’s an indication of the clutch dragging.
A dragging clutch means it is not fully disengaging. That is usually caused by a faulty hydraulic slave cylinder or master cylinder, or both. Take a look at the clutch fluid reservoir to be sure that it’s full. If you need help having this all checked, a certified mechanic from YourMechanic can come to your home or office to diagnose your shifting issue and let you know what needs to be done.
How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Just as you learned what happens with low transmission fluid, dirty fluid, or a clogged filter can cause similar transmission troubles and create a car that won`t back up in reverse. Improper lubrication from old fluid or debris in contaminated fluid will affect how the transmission shifts into reverse or other gear.
In many cases, delayed shifting of any kind is caused by issues with the transmission`s valve body. Shift solenoid or computer malfunctions can also result in these types of hitches and may require transmission service for correction.
Check to see if the brakes are applied and see if the master cylinder is full of brake fluid. If you need further assistance with your vehicle not moving when putting the transmission in drive or reverse, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.
Hard, and sometimes impossible shifting into first and reverse is caused by the clutch disc not moving away from the spinning flywheel. This is commonly referred to as the “clutch is not releasing”. The number one cause is the hydraulic system that operates the clutch is leaking and has low fluid.
But if the solenoid malfunctions mechanically, no reverse or delayed and slipping reverse may occur.
What is the fix for a slipping transmission? It`s simple. Just pop the hood of your vehicle, locate the transmission switch, and change the setting from “SLIP” to “STABLE” . . . If only it were that easy.
When the car starts having issues going in reverse, either it has burnt out internal clutches, or the gear housing is cracked and binding. Either way, you will need to have a transmission specialist check out the vehicle and they will more than likely need to rebuild or replace it.
One reason why an automatic transmission isn`t shifting into gear has to do with the fluid. If it`s not at the right level or the incorrect type has been used, then it`ll affect the gears. Another big reason has to do with the ECM possibly going bad.
Transmission won`t engage or stay in gear
If when you put your vehicle into gear and it won`t move, this may be a problem with low transmission fluid due to a leak, the shifter, shifter cable, or it could even be a problem in the valve body of your automatic transmission.
Problems Reversing – One common problem that can happen with a clogged filter is difficulty moving in reverse. The lack of fluid flowing through the transmission can cause the reverse gear to lock. This may prevent the car from going in reverse altogether, or it may cause it to hesitate before launching into reverse.
It could be as simple as a shift cable adjustment, or it could be a problem with hard components inside the transmission that need to be replaced.

My pacifica runs and drives only reverse when i shift it to drive dies quickly . But you can shift it to reverse and neutral
ANSWER : This is an internal problem with the transmission and may be a valve body or leaking internal seal. The problem is the transmission leaking pressure internally, and when you put it in drive, the transmission is trying to go into reverse and drive at the same time causing the transmission to stall the engine. Have a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, scan the computer to see if a code is received that will help detect the cause. They will be able to diagnose your stalling issue, and any other problem you are having, so that a proper repair can be made.
why wont my `06 chevy tahoe shift into drive and go but when in park and shifted to reverse it will reverse?
ANSWER : Hi there. A car that refuses to shift or go into gear easily is trying to tell you something is wrong and in most cases the culprit is the clutch (in a manual transmission) or torque converter (in automatic transmission). Transmissions are very complicated and have many moving parts, ignoring a hard to shift issue can quickly spiral into a very expensive transmission repair. Over time, especially as a vehicle goes over the 100,000 mile mark, parts and gears inside the transmission simply wear out. This process can be dramatically accelerated if the car is driven with low levels of transmission fluid. The transmission will have to be rebuilt or replaced which is a very expensive repair. Symptoms of a failing transmission include hard shifting, humming, clunking or grinding. It might be best to have one of our professional mobile mechanics come to your location and complete a car is hard to shift inspection, so they can determine the best course of action.

My car will not shift out of drive and into park – 1999 Hyundai Sonata
ANSWER : Hi. This sounds like the ignition switch has a problem and is not allowing the car to go into park. If the ignition switch is not sending the signal to the neutral safety switch that the key is in the run position, it will not allow the shifter to move. It is also possible that the shift linkage is damaged and is causing the problem you have as well.
I suggest you have a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic, come to your location to determine why the car is not shifting properly and suggest the necessary repairs
My car is having problems shifting into reverse
ANSWER : Manual transmissions use a reverse lockout to prevent the car from going into reverse when the car is moving forwards. Sometimes these lockouts can fail and cause the symptoms you have described. Other possible causes are the reverse synchros inside the transmission failing or very low transmission fluid. This problem will require thorough diagnosis for an accurate answer. A qualified technician, like the ones at YourMechanic, will be able to diagnose your shifting issue and determine what needs to be repaired.
