After changing a faulty steering column im unable to keep the truck running. Is there an inexpensive solution. Thanks.

Good Morning. I had to change out my steering column. So i found a used column that came with a key. I swapped them out but the truck would not stay running. It would start then immediately shut off. Seems to be an anti theft issue. So i tried the 10 and 30 minute key procedures with no luck. So i then replaced the lock cylinder with my original lock cylinder making it so i could utilize the original key. No luck there either. So i tried the 10 and 30 minute procedures again with no luck.

Is there a way to bypass the anti theft system? I am trying to avoid the towing and shop fee. Thanks for

Hello, thank you for writing in. The Chevy Passlock system is likely cutting off the power supply to the fuel pump. Typically when this happens resetting the system resolves any issues. This is assuming the circuit is perfect. The BCM (body control module) may be detecting another type of electrical issue, which will cause the system to think its been tampered with. You may be able to find a code triggered by the security system that has been saved. Scanning the vehicle may be beneficial, but hard to do from home without a scan tool. Make sure all of the wiring in the circuit is perfect. Any connection made need to be clean, dry, and tight. With the different swaps you have done, it is possible a wire may have been damaged or is not connected securely. Our service technicians can dispatch to the property to help you with this problem to avoid tow fees. Contact the service department for more information and to schedule an appointment.

How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

To reset your Chevy Silverado`s anti-theft system, you put the key in the ignition and put your car into accessory mode—meaning the car`s electrical system is on but the engine is off. Leave your key in the ignition for about 10 minutes, then start up the engine. After all that, the security light should stop blinking.
Best Answer. Put the key in the ignition, turn key to on position and leave it on until the security light goes out. Usually 15min. Once this happens crank the truck without turning the key backwards, just turn to start.
Car alarms rely on the electronic component of the vehicle, and disconnecting the battery should both silence the siren and reset your alarm. Open up the hood, locate the battery, and with a wrench, remove the negative terminal. Then reconnect it after a minute has passed.
If your ECU controls the anti-theft system, disconnecting the battery may lock you out of your car. Like desktop computers and most other electronics, disconnecting the battery cable for a short period will not fully reset your ECU due to the residual power remaining in the circuits.
Put the key in the ignition and rotate forward two clicks to the “On” position that makes the dashboard light up, but don`t try starting the car. Leave the key there for 15 minutes; it doesn`t always take that long, but it can. After that time, check to see if the anti-theft light has gone out, if one was lit up.
You can reset your alarm system by powering it down and then powering it back on. This is what is known as a power reset. To power down the system, the backup battery must be disconnected, and the transformer must be unplugged. Then reconnect the battery and transformer to power it back on.
The Interior Movement Sensor monitors the interior of the vehicle with ultrasonic waves. If it senses movement or unauthorized entry, it can activate the vehicle alarm, which will trigger the horn, siren and vehicle lights as well as the Surround Vision Recorder, if equipped.
Check the door lock

In some cases, the car`s anti-theft system is linked to a door lock mechanism. To disable it, you need to locate a small switch or release lever on the door panel and engage it. This will cause the car`s security system to be disabled.

Passive anti-theft devices include: An alarm system that activates automatically when you turn the ignition off or shut your car door. Automatic disabling devices such as a computer chip in the ignition key. This device will prevent the car from starting if an unrecognized key is used.
If your ECU controls the anti-theft system, disconnecting the battery may lock you out of your car. Like desktop computers and most other electronics, disconnecting the battery cable for a short period will not fully reset your ECU due to the residual power remaining in the circuits.
Use a portable jump starter or use another car to jumpstart your vehicle. Either with a portable jump starter or with a jumper cable connected to another car. It`s pretty easy to jumpstart your vehicle. All you have to do is connect to identify the ignition coil and the battery.
the passlock iii system uses a transponder located under the plastic covering of the key. in most cases, these keys are stamped “pk3” on the metal blade near the plastic covering.
If your ECU controls the anti-theft system, disconnecting the battery may lock you out of your car. Like desktop computers and most other electronics, disconnecting the battery cable for a short period will not fully reset your ECU due to the residual power remaining in the circuits.
1) Click on [Log In] on the Login page to enter the Security Verification page. Click on [Reset Security Verification] to go to the next step. 2) Select [Reset Google Authenticator], and click on [Reset] to go to the next step.
Remove the AC power to the home alarm console from the wall directly. Use your console`s access key (or another item such as a small screw) to unlock and open the system`s backing. Lastly, disconnect at least one of the wires that are attached to the system`s main battery, which is blocky and noticeable in most units.
Infrared (IR) Security Sensors

Infrared sensors utilize infrared light to detect motion. In a security system, that motion triggers an alarm, turns on lights, or sends an alert. There are, however, two different types of infrared sensors commonly used in security devices ― active and passive infrared sensors.

If you removed a fuse or breaker for the ignition or fuel injection systems, the car wouldn`t start (assuming it`s a gasoline-powered vehicle).
Passkey II (Resistive Chip Ignition Key) – In the Passkey II system, the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) function is stored in the Body Control Module (BCM) and validates the resistive chip in the ignition key.
Active disabling device: a cut-off system that you have to turn on to prevent the fuel, ignition, or starter from operating. Typically controlled by a button on your car key, active disabling devices require you to take action to protect the car.

Cranks and runs rough have to keep foot in gas to keep running. Has new fuel pump and died while driving after pump was changed
ANSWER : Check fuel pressure. There are only three possible explanations: a fault in fuel supply (plugged filter, injectors, etc.); ignition system problems; and air induction including the idle air control valve, throttle position sensor, mass air flow sensor and vacuum leaks including the PCV and EGR systems. If obvious, and easy to check, possibilities do not reveal the fault, the recommended service to request is a rough running diagnostic and the responding certified mechanic will travel right to your location and get this diagnosed and resolved for you. It is also possible that diagnostic trouble codes have set and the mechanic will attempt to retrieve those using an appropriate scan tool. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic.

I changed the fuel pump and truck ran great for 3 days. Now after 3 days, the truck dies. It will start running for a few minutes, then dies like before.
ANSWER : Hi there, thanks for writing in. I’d be happy to help. It sounds like you should disconnect the connector to the fuel pump and inspect it for any signs of getting hot. The female connections may be too loose on the fuel pump and lose contact after running and getting hot. If there are indeed any signs of problems, then I’d suggest replacing connector and adding dielectric lube to pins before installation. This should solve the problem, but if you continue to experience issues, feel free to reach out to us for help again.

Very loud pop when turning sharp left leaking transmission or power steering fluid where steering column meet rack
ANSWER : Hi there. If everything else has already been installed from the donor vehicle then it sounds like the high pressure hose is all that you need to install. The hardest part of doing this is the routing. One thing you may also want to double check is that the donor vehicle and your 2003 Escape have the same rack. There are different models depending on the model and the size of your wheels. You need to install the pressure line first, but if it does not line up then you may have the wrong rack installed. If you would like some assistance installing this hose, consider YourMechanic, as a certified mechanic can come to you to [replace your high pressure steering hose] https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/power-steering-pressure-hose-replacement

After changing the steering column, I cannot get the truck to stay running.
ANSWER : Hi there. Bypassing the anti-theft system is not recommended. The passlock sensor is attached to the lock cylinder housing. Exchanging the passlock sensor from the original steering column may resolve the no start issue. A scanner capable of programming may be required to relearn the passlock system. It may be, the ignition switch is faulty in the replacement column. Proper diagnoses should be performed to avoid unnecessary repairs. I recommend having your vehicle’s no start be diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic.

The truck intermittently, has a very rough idle, and runs rough, usually after warming up.
ANSWER : Hello. This can be caused by a number of different things. If this occurred right after you had gotten fuel then I would start by testing the fuel pressure. I would do this when the vehicle starts running poorly. It is possible that the bad fuel contaminated the fuel pump and it is not putting out the right pressure. If the fuel pressure is fine then I would check the other sensors readings with a scan tool. One other common thing that I have seen on this engine is a leaking intake manifold gasket. It starts leaking on the bottom side and that leak causes the MAF and MAP to not read correctly which causes it to run like this. If you would like to have this rough running condition looked at, consider having a YourMechanic certified techniciancan come to your home or office to diagnose why it is running rough.

I changed fuel pump and truck ran great for 3 days. Now after 3 days truck dies. It will start runs few min then dies like before
ANSWER : Check the bottom of the fuel tank for sediment. Age and mileage could have accumulated a lot of it at the bottom of the tank. If you did not, check and change the fuel filter. Rule of thumb – replace the fuel filter any time you replace a fuel pump. Also, check the wiring for any chaffing on the fuel pump when you remove it. While your problem is kind of unique, I have seen many GM truck fuel tank baffle loosen over time, occasionally rubbing against the fuel pump can intermittently short it out and/or block the fuel pump pick up. To have this diagnosed, consider having a certified expert from YourMechanic inspect the stalling issue to have this corrected.

My truck won’t allow me to change gears even when pressing the clutch. No gears go in at all. Makes it impossible to drive.
ANSWER : Hello, this concern is possibly the slave or clutch master cylinder failure. These two components use brake fluid to apply pressure for movement of the clutch system. This fluid breaks down in time and causes the seals to fail (leak). A low fluid level would cause this concern as well as internal leakage. Replacement of components would be necessary. This type of concern would need to be inspected. If you’d like, a certified technician from YourMechanic can come to your location to diagnose your vehicle, and possibly replace your clutch master cylinder if need be.
