Acts like it wants to die, shifting issues.

My car is acting like it wants to die when I turn it on. Every time I drive it, it takes forever for it too feel like I'm going the right speed and it takes a minute for it to shift in the right gear.

My car has 175000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Experienced mechanics share their insights in answering this question :
Hi, thanks for writing in. This issue could be caused by a vacuum leak, a failed sensor, a problem with the transmission, or any number of other possible problems. Some diagnostic testing will need to be performed to identify where the problem is located. A certified mechanic will need to connect the car to a diagnostic scanner and pull the codes from the computer. These codes will give the mechanic an idea what system(s) are being affected. They will not tell them exactly what the problem is directly, but it will give them the information necessary to at least narrow down the possibilities. How to Identify and Fix Common car Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced mechanics :

Fuel injector nozzles can become clogged over time, which can lead to a sputtering engine, slow acceleration and the car not having enough power. Fuel injectors can be cleaned if the problem is caught early, but as the conditions worsens, the injectors may have to be replaced.
The most common reasons a Chevrolet Cavalier has rough idle are a vacuum leak, an issue with the spark plugs, or a problem with the ignition coil.
if you are referring to an inertia switch an 03 cavalier doesn`t have one. They have a fuel pump relay that is activated by the pcm. there are some safety shut offs built into the system but in my experience if you don`t have fuel pump running on one of these cars it is usually the fuel pump.
The most common reasons a Chevrolet Cavalier won`t start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.
Your vehicle could have dirty fuel injectors, a damaged fuel pump, a blocked catalytic converter, a faulty mass airflow sensor, broken spark plugs, or even an accumulation of moisture.
So, if your car starts stuttering, there`s a good chance there`s an issue with your spark plugs (or the cables attached to them). It`s not unusual for these car parts to wear out, and a faulty spark plug will cause your engine to misfire and jerk when you accelerate and for your engine to be much louder than usual.
A rough idling engine can be caused by spark plugs or spark plug wires. Spark plugs use the electrical current received from ignition coils to ignite the air/fuel mixture within the combustion chamber. A plug that is damaged or installed incorrectly can result in fuel being burned at an inconsistent rate.
Oxygen (O2) sensor

An oxygen sensor monitors and analyzes the amount of oxygen in a vehicle`s exhaust system after combustion. A dirty, damaged or malfunctioning O2 sensor (or sensors) affects the air/fuel mixture, causing the engine to idle rough.

1. Turn the ignition switch to position `0`. 2. Press down the rubber reset button on the top of the inertia switch.
A sputtering engine is a sign of a lean fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This can happen if you have a clogged somewhere in the fuel system that impedes the delivery of fuel into the chamber. For example, your fuel filter or fuel lines might be clogged.
One of the most common causes of jerky acceleration is a dirty fuel injector. Your fuel injectors are responsible for pushing fuel into your engine`s cylinders. This means they control the timing and amount of fuel used to keep your engine running.

When my car is idling the rpms and battery gauge drop off and it acts like it wants to die.
ANSWER : Hello Nick,
What are you are describing sounds like potentially a dirty or failing idle air control valve which reads the air intake into the engine. The computer uses this data to make adjustments to the air/fuel ratio to keep the motor running smoothly. When this is not working properly, this may cause the engine to lack acceleration and stall in many cases at low speed or in idle situations as you have described. As the engine RPM’s drop, this may also explain the drop in voltage you see in your charging gauge. I would recommend having a professional from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.

it doesn’t want to shift into reverse sometimes and it doesn’t want to shift up to the next gear without letting off on the gas why
ANSWER : Hello. It sounds like the car has a valve body issue. Most of the time, this is caused by one of the valves getting hung up in the transmission valve body or one of the solenoids sticking. I usually scan the computer for codes first to see if anything comes up. If not, then I test the pressures of the transmission to see if it is an electrical issue or a mechanical issue. Either way it would be best for you to get some help from a transmission specialist with this. If you would like to have this checked, a qualified professional from YourMechanic can come to your home or office to diagnose the shifting issue and pinpoint the problem.

I just bought a new battery and i try to start it..it acts like it wants to start but its like theres no gas for it to stHey so ca
ANSWER : Hi There,
This may be related to many different possibilities, some of which may be related to a lack of spark and some of which may be related to a fuel delivery problem or a combination of both. Things like ignition coils, crankshaft position sensor, spark plugs, spark plug wires or ignition module are all components that may cause the motor to not produce the spark needed to ignite the fuel in the motor.

In the case of a fuel delivery problem, this may be related to low fuel pressure, faulty or dirty fuel injectors, a faulty or dirty idle air control valve (this relays information about air intake to the computer which makes fuel adjustments), or potentially a faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump. Fuel delivery problems will typically not allow the proper amount of fuel to be delivered to the cylinders which results in a lean fuel condition which can cause backfiring or simply cause the motor not to start as a result of fuel starvation. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and inspect your vehicle.

Clutch engaged with pedal up or down issue? 2006 Mazda 3
ANSWER : Hi there – there are several possibilities here – none of them pleasant, and all will require removal of the transmission to get to the failed bit. It is possible the pilot bearing has seized up – which would make it seem as though the clutch were engaged, regardless of whether the clutch pedal was depressed (and working properly) or not. It’s also possible the clutch pressure plate "fingers" where the throwout bearing applies forced from the clutch pedal and hydraulics are damaged in some fashion, and will not compress to release the clutch disc. Last and least likely is a failure of the clutch master cylinder – internally – since there doesn’t appear to be any fluid loss. I recommend a clutch inspection performed by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

07 charger v6 wont move, like its in limp mode, will shift solenoid fix this? wont move in reverse. thinking shift solenoid, help.
ANSWER : The check engine light could mean diagnostic codes related to the transmission failure are available. If you request a check engine light diagnostic a mechanic could see if relevant codes have set and narrow the diagnostic for you. Check to be sure that there is adequate fluid. Check to be sure that the manual lever (shift lever) on the transmission reaches the correct position when you select "D" or "R". If you can’t move in any gear, the problem is not likely to be the solenoids because failure of the solenoids will still allow operation in "some" gears, if the gear is manually selected. If the solenoids failed, such would also result in a code being output because the TCM performs continuous circuit integrity testing on the solenoids. You can test that part separately in any event. There is a 164 page repair manual, with all the diagnostics, that you can use to pinpoint and repair the issue. However, if you just want a diagnostic, you can request a transmission diagnostic – failure to shift and the responding certified mechanic will pinpoint the issue. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Transmission shifting issues, flare/slip on 2-3 shift. 2002 VW Jetta
ANSWER : Hi there – the valve body on this transmission is prone to wear, especially for control pressure hydraulic circuits on high-mileage units like yours. If you did not replace the valve body with a rebuilt unit, and the control pressure solenoid, these components are the most likely cause of this behavior. I would have the transmission hydraulic pressures tested in operation to confirm this diagnosis. A reputable transmission shop can assist with this task.

My pacifica runs and drives only reverse when i shift it to drive dies quickly . But you can shift it to reverse and neutral
ANSWER : This is an internal problem with the transmission and may be a valve body or leaking internal seal. The problem is the transmission leaking pressure internally, and when you put it in drive, the transmission is trying to go into reverse and drive at the same time causing the transmission to stall the engine. Have a mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, scan the computer to see if a code is received that will help detect the cause. They will be able to diagnose your stalling issue, and any other problem you are having, so that a proper repair can be made.
