key in accessory position and can’ turn off or on can’t get key to turn stuck in accessory position
ANSWER : Hi and thanks for contacting YourMechanic. When the key is in the ignition switch, the key should not be able to come out of the switch when it has been turned. When the key is able to come out of the ignition switch in the On position or Accessory position, then the lock inside the tumbler has failed. Try to turn the steering wheel side to side to see if the steering wheel lock is causing your issues. If your steering wheel lock is not the issue, then you will need to have a new ignition switch tumbler installed and you will have to get a new key that matches the vehicle. If your ignition switch is stuck in the accessory position and will not shut off the power to the car, you can put graphite into the tumbler to help with the key; although this will damage the tumbler, you will be able to shut off the power to the vehicle. I recommend replacing the ignition switch and key to solve your stuck-in-accessory position situation. If you need assistance in getting your vehicle’s ignition switch to shut off, you should contact a technician. A YourMechanic certified mechanic can come to your location to perform an Ignition key is stuck and does not turn Inspection on your vehicle and diagnose this issue.

The front accessory power socket is located under the radio. Pull the cover up to access it.
The second accessory power socket is located in the bottom of the console compartment. Lift the lid and you’ll find it near the back. You’ll need to raise the cover to use it.

Tips

It’s normal for the charger and the socket to get hot during use.
The sockets pull power straight from the battery, so try not to use them if the engine isn’t running.

Chains: You will need a set of safety chains to connect the trailer to the hitch in addition to the ball.
Brakes: Depending on the weight and size of the trailer, you may need to consider brakes (electric brakes are the most common).
Mirrors: You might need to install aftermarket mirrors on your car so that you can see the trailer and the vehicles behind it (depending on your state’s laws).
Lights: Your trailer will have to have lights that connect to your car’s wiring harness. This includes turn signals, taillights and brake lights.

Drivers side window very unresponsive when engine is running. Works fine in accessory mode. Any ideas please?
ANSWER : Hello, thank you for writing in. There are a few considerations we need to make during this process. One being the battery is responsible for providing power in the accessory mode, while the alternator provides the power while the vehicle is on. Secondly, when only one window is effected, it is typically the regulator or the motor that is to blame, rather than a switch issue. However we can test for the available power to the switch in both situations, to find out if there is an honest power drop while the vehicle is running, or if the issue is with how the motor is using the power. If the power supply to the motor is low when the vehicle is running, you will have to trace down what is causing low power. You will want to focus on the alternator, and trace the circuit to the switch checking after each component. For more help, contact our service department to schedule an appointment.

What Does the Accessory Belt on the Front of an Engine Do?
ANSWER : The accessory belt is used to turn any accessory by the crankshaft of the engine any time the engine is running, without having a direct mechanical connection. The belt is used by the engine to turn all the accessories at different speeds depending on the pulley sizes used. The types of accessories commonly driven by the accessory drive belts are the water pump, air conditioning compressor, alternator, power steering pump, and air injection pumps. If an engine is equipped with a supercharger then it is most likely driven by an accessory belt.

My car was jump started wrong and now my car doesn’t start and the accessories don’t work even with key on engine off.
ANSWER : Hi There,
Reversing the battery terminals can cause blown fuses, shorted sensors and switches and worst a shorted out ECM. You should have a fusible link on the hot side connection of the battery which is designed for hedging against accidents like this. I would suggest having a professional from YourMechanic come to your location to take a look at your vehicle to determine what may have been impacted by this.
